They provide useful information to get custom remote controls working, e.g. how to name your custom xml-files. It would also be nice to give some in-package hints on how to setup kdelirc correctly. For example, I have a Technotrend DVB-C budget card with a remote control. It uses the Linux Input-Event-System. I first tried the package inputlirc, but it doesn't work with kdelirc, because it doesn't support the LIST command to list all available remote controls. Thus a Conflicts: inputlirc would be appropriate or at lease some hint, that you must use lircd. Bug#126406: kppp: Alternative for using noauth as suggested by README
Hello. On April 22, 2004 19:01, Achim Bohnet wrote: I got a laptop with a working modem card working on linux to fix some problems. And realized o noauth is already the default additional pppd option o only possibility (I found) to get kpp to work with pap/chap is to suid it to root because kppp writes stuff to /etc/ppp/{pap,chap}-secrets (cp,modify, rename AFIAR) (looks like worth another bug report) This is true, as far as I can tell. I don't have access to the laptop anymore. So could you please try if 'noauth' instead of 'call kppp-options' works if you do dpkg-statoverride --force --add root 4754 root dip /usr/sbin/kppp # permanent or chmod 4754 /usr/sbin/kppp # until next kppp upgrade ? Unfortunately, this still doesn't work. Even when kppp is 4754 root.dip, the pppd doesn't consider kppp's custom noauth argument privileged - I don't get a connection unless I manually change auth -- noauth in /etc/ppp/options. The solution that works for me is to combine your two ideas: 1) make /usr/bin/kppp 4754 root.dip (so {chap,pap}-secrets can be changed) 2) add /etc/ppp/peers/kppp-options (640 root.dip), containing noauth 3) change kppp's default custom pppd argument from noauth to call kppp-options This works for my PAP/CHAP connection. Unless I've missed something, if we implement these three changes, then all that end users need to do to get kppp working is add themselves to the dip group, and maybe set up /dev/modem. The dialout group is not needed, and /etc/ppp/options is not altered. I really suspect now that noauth okay but suid bit is missing. If I miss the trick to the get PAP and/or CHAP working with only sgid dip, please let me know. Let me know too... I don't like the idea of making kppp SUID root, but it seems necessary. Comments? BTW, why is ppp only a Recommends? Surely it should be a Depends? Cheers, Christopher Martin

At least here in Germany all ISP require either PAP or CHAP authentification (guess somewhere else too) and this makes kppp unusable as it is now (kppp in 2.* was setuid root AFAIR and 2.* was done by Ivan who also wrote the README. Hmm..., aaahhh http://lists.debian.org/debian-kde/2003/debian-kde-200303/msg00339.html http://lists.debian.org/debian-kde/2003/debian-kde-200303/msg00316.html http://lists.debian.org/debian-kde/2003/debian-kde-200310/msg00076.html ;) I really suspect now that noauth okay but suid bit is missing. If I miss the trick to the get PAP and/or CHAP working with only sgid dip, please let me know. Achim P.S. When suid root is the route to go I would vote to keep 'noauth' instead of my 'call kppp-options' because it more secure. E. Kloppenburg -- Ernst Kloppenburg Stuttgart, Germany -- To me vi is Zen. Bug#126406: kppp: Alternative for using noauth as suggested by README

Still, I tried to improve the first part containing the explanation of the problem somewhat. Maybe you want to use part of my suggestion: The ppp protocol includes an authentication scheme. That is, your ISP requires the ppp program running on your machine to authenticate itself using username and password you were given by your ISP. By default, your local ppp program also requires the ISP to authenticate itself. This is because linux ppp is also used on dialin servers. But for your ISP is does not make sense to authenticate to you, leading to immediate disconnects. The solution... -- Ernst Kloppenburg Stuttgart, Germany
Bug#126406: kppp: Alternative for using noauth as suggested by README
Hi, FWIW here's my alternative: to avoid setting noauth in /etc/peer/options I use allee[0] ~ # cat /etc/ppp/peers/kppp-options noauth and added 'call kppp-options' to kppps 'Customize pppd arguments' option. I assume that it would not be compilicated to patch kppp to add 'call kppp-options' as default for new connections and include the simple /etc/ppp/peers/kppp-option to the kppp pkg. Quite a lot of ISPs have broken authentication configs on their servers, because windows clients never check them anyway. I think I clearly understand the noauth option: - if noauth is given, your pppd does not require the ppp server of the ISP to authenticate (which would not be possible) - there is a second case, where noauth applies: when somebody dials into your machine (which may be wanted or not). It is for this second case, that putting 'noauth' into the options file is not recommended. Therefore, normally all provider configurations in /etc/ppp/peers do contain 'noauth'. I found a different solution to make kppp work: add the following to /usr/share/doc/kppp/README.Debian privgroup dip And put the people in dip that should be able to use kppp. w.r.t. to security this is better, but not optimal, of course Since noone is allowed to execute kppp unless they're in the dip group, this would be pretty pointless, no ? If you read /usr/share/doc/kppp/README.Debian again, you'll see that the dip group and its meaning is already explained there. I admit that I unnecessarily mentioned that people should be put in the group dip because they already need to be. But my point (which you may have missed) was to add 'privgroup dip' to the configuration file. Because this enables everybody who is in the group dip to add the priviledged option 'noauth' to their kppp configuration. Thus putting 'noauth' into /etc/ppp/options can be avoided. -- Ernst Kloppenburg Stuttgart, Germany

Ktown README: 2.2 -- 3.1
I just upgraded from 2.2 to 3.1 on Woody. Since the README on ktown doesn't have specific 2.2.2 -- 3.1 advice, here's what I encountered. (I haven't really followed any of the 2.2 threads, so apologies if I'm repeating what's already been said.) The only problem I ran into was with kdelibs3. I _think_ that a smooth upgrade path would be to first purge kdelibs3 then do the apt-get stuff: dpkg --purge --force-all kdelibs3 apt-get update apt-get install kdebase kdm I'm not sure if this would really work, since I tried to do apt-get install first, then used dselect to remove kdelibs3 and install kdelibs4 at the same time, then did apt-get install kdebase kdm again. (Thanks Ralf!!) BTW, the README lists kdebindings as one of the KDE packages, but apt-get can't find it... M.
kdm section in ktown README
Hallo Ralf, To cite your README: NB: Corrections and updates are always welcome ! Here they are ;) general: fmt -80 would be nice ;) 6.1 1st para I think kde defaults are the test for Joe Desktop user. Telling them about ssh -X is much easier than explaning xauth DISPLAY etc. Without ssh -X Joe User uses xhosts + 6.1.1 2nd para All screen I've seen the last couple of year have dpi 90 (currently 93, 105, 132 dpi). So 100 dpi is much better than 75 dpi. If someone is to blame then IMHO KDE default font size ;) I like that kdvi or kword printout is as big as the the screen display. At least with DDC capabele driver and monitor the xserver computs -dpi itself when not overriden on the command line. That's fine with ttf and type* fonts but one can get strange results with pixel fonts ;) 6.1.2 KDM manages the remote X servers (not vice versa) To achieve what you explained, there's definitly no need to remove -nolisten tcp from Xservers 6.1.4 Again, -nolisten tcp missing for no obvious reason. Speaking of unstable, what are the plans for updating your sid build?
