I've got exactly the same printer/scanner (PSC1210) here working
flawlessly, so hopefully I can help you. First, make sure you've done
'apt-get install hplip foomatic-db-hpijs'. Once those are installed,
go into the KDE Print control section, remove the PSC1210 that may be
there (so we can go from scratch). Add a Printer, choose Local
Printer, and at the bottom pick the hp:/usb/psc_1200_series..
printer. Click next, and go to HP for your manufacturer, and then
choose 'PSC 1210 hpijs' as the Model. 'Next' through until its done,
and that should be it; you'll now have a printer at something similar
to:
ipp://telemachus:631/printers/PSC1210
hp:/usb/psc_1200_series?serial=12345678

Apparently there are 2 entries for Hewlett-Packard
printers: one is labeled Hewlett-Packard

 (stuff deleted)

and the other is labeled hp.

Apparently there are print drivers from more than one source.

The serial number didn't show up in the printer section on the KDE
Control Center, but the other stuff looks
about identical to what you have.

BTW, do you also have a parallel printer?

--
(Mr.) Gayle Lee Fairless,

Yes, I was able to add the parallel printer back with a hpijs entry.

URI:ipp://gcomm:631/printers/hp697C

Device:parallel:/dev/lp0
Model:HP DeskJet 697C Foomatic/hpijs (recommended)

I got a better test page printout that was better centered with better
resolution than the one that I
got with woody way back when.

I used Kedit to print out a text file with different fonts. The regular
Times New Roman at pitch 14
looks rather nice.

I noticed two entries for the psc 1210; one with hpijs, and one without.
The one with hpijs printed in color; I didn't get a test page with the
second. Is the second one supposed to be black ink?

I'm not actually sure what the non-hpijs one does :- )

   It does nothing so far.

I found out that it did nothing because I needed to change

Device:usb:/dev/usb/lp1

to

Device:usb:/dev/usb/lp0

which is the same line in psc1210color. Since the entries are the same
printer, then the device should be
the same. Once the change was saved, the test page that was scheduled
previously started printing.

URI:ipp://gcomm:631/printers/psc1210color

Device:usb:/dev/usb/lp0
Model:HP PSC 1200 Foomatic/hpijs (recommended)

... is what I have for the usb printer.

Can you get yours to print with the black ink cartridge? It seems to
use composite color to produce
black. I need to do some more testing, though.

Hm.. I've never noticed if it's using the black or the color cartridge when
printing. However, it seems that the black on it is rather grayish when
printed from Debian, but when it gets a print job from the one of the Windows
machines in my network the black is very sharp. Let me know what you find
out.

It may be a function of the font selection. Playing with the font
choices in Kedit or your favorite

editor/word processor/word mangler may reveal more.

Anyway, both my parallel and usb printers now finally seem to be
setup. Making the programs

that need to print use the proper path is probably the next step.

No, I've only got the PSC1210. When you installed hplip, it would have
removed hpoj -- they Conflict. HPLIP has support for both the PSC1210 and
the 697, checking on this page:
http://hpinkjet.sourceforge.net/productssupported.php

I went there and couldn't find any supported list.

You should be able to add both printers at the same time through the KDE
control module; just pick the right driver and interface. In fact, HPLIP
should support parallel printers through the hp:/ URI as well.

I've got exactly the same printer/scanner (PSC1210) here working flawlessly,
so hopefully I can help you. First, make sure you've done 'apt-get install
hplip foomatic-db-hpijs'. Once those are installed, go into the KDE Print
control section, remove the PSC1210 that may be there (so we can go from
scratch). Add a Printer, choose Local Printer, and at the bottom pick the
hp:/usb/psc_1200_series.. printer. Click next, and go to HP for your
manufacturer, and then choose 'PSC 1210 hpijs' as the Model. 'Next' through
until its done, and that should be it; you'll now have a printer at something
similar to:

ipp://telemachus:631/printers/PSC1210
hp:/usb/psc_1200_series?serial=12345678

And that should be it. XSane (or your scanning program of choice) will
automatically detect the hplip controller as well; scanning shouldn't require
any configuration whatsoever.

Hope that helps!

I have good news and bad news and worse news.

I did get a test page out of the psc12100. Too bad the color ink

It keeps blinking its little
amber light at me. Apparently there are 2 entries for Hewlett-Packard

printer stuff; and the other

I mistakenly thought that I didn't have the foomatic-db-hpijs package
and let aptitude alias apt-get remove the hpoj package. I guess I'll
have to find a
way to force it back into the configuration or set up the 697C as a raw
printer.

The serial number didn't show up in the printer section on the KDE

about identical to what you have.

BTW, do you also have a parallel printer?

The KDE Control Center has

URI:ipp://gcomm:631/printers/psc1210

Device:ptal:/mlc:usb:psc_1200_series

but the device driver(?) picked a HP 697C driver from the foomatic
database.

Now I've gotten a test page from the HP 697C parallel printer on lp0. But
the psc 1210 does not respond.

I'm typing this from work and can supply more info tonight if needed.

I also have the package that mentions gimp.

How do I get the usb printer online. I also want to get the scanner
interfaced, too.

Thanks!

Hello Gayle,

Now that I have your printer description, I found this driver at
http://localhost:631/admin under usb Printer #1, make HP:

Common UNIX Printing System

 Admin

Model/Driver for USBHPpsc1210

Model:

Copyright 1993-2005 by Easy Software Products, All Rights Reserved. The
Common UNIX Printing System, CUPS, and the CUPS logo are the trademark
property of Easy Software Products . All other
trademarks are the property of their respective owners.

ie., *HP PSC 1210 Foomatic/hpijs (recommended) (en)
*

I wouldn't try to use the ipp driver. I did and never could get the
printer to respond in any way.
Just go the http://localhost:631/admin on your browser and sign in as
root, select add printer, fill in the name, location and description of
your printer, click continue and select usb printer#1, click continue
and select HP for the make, click continue and select the above driver
you'll find at the very bottom of the list, click continue once more and
I think you are through with the setup. Click of the link on the last
page where it says your printer is installed and you can then have you
printer print out a test page to see if its going to work.

If you figure out how to get your All In One scanner feature to work,
let me know as I need that on my Stylus CX6400

also.
Note: this sets up a local printer on your PC. I don't know any thing
about network printers. Hope this helps. This is how I set up my Epson
USB printer just using the appropriate selections for my printer.

I've got exactly the same printer/scanner (PSC1210) here working flawlessly,
so hopefully I can help you. First, make sure you've done 'apt-get install
hplip foomatic-db-hpijs'. Once those are installed, go into the KDE Print
control section, remove the PSC1210 that may be there (so we can go from
scratch). Add a Printer, choose Local Printer, and at the bottom pick the
hp:/usb/psc_1200_series.. printer. Click next, and go to HP for your
manufacturer, and then choose 'PSC 1210 hpijs' as the Model. 'Next' through
until its done, and that should be it; you'll now have a printer at something
similar to:
ipp://telemachus:631/printers/PSC1210
hp:/usb/psc_1200_series?serial=12345678

And that should be it. XSane (or your scanning program of choice) will
automatically detect the hplip controller as well; scanning shouldn't require
any configuration whatsoever.

Hope that helps!
