Yes, apparently that's what it was. Disabling Dim Display in all
relevant power management profiles got rid of the popup.

Thanks everyone.

Check your hotkey settings for VLC. Display OSD menu on top of video
output is Alt+Shift+m, unset as default, Do not display OSD menu on
video output is Ctrl+Alt+m, unset as default. You may have
 inadvertently set and trigger those.
 Also:-
Under Videos/Subtitles/OSD try unticking On Screen Display and check
that Overlays/On Screen Display Menu is not ticked.

Do you care whether you get the OSD popup when you manually adjust the
brightness? If not, you could see if there's a way to disable it
entirely. I did a little bit of searching and couldn't find a way to do
so, but perhaps someone more knowledgeable than I is aware of such a means.
I did, however, run across a forum post [1] in my search that dealt with
a similar issue (osd popping up at random) - perhaps one of the
solutions proposed there will be of assistance.

Perhaps you can send a screenshot when this popup appears, in this way it will
be much easier to help you.

To do it just press the PrintScreen key and ksnapshot will appear with the
screenshot, you just have to press the save button.

Best regards,

Josep

Any idea, why it appears when I don't call for it? Event better, how to
stop it doing this?

I have already tried setting the global shortcuts for decrease/increase
brightness to none, but that didn't help.
