It _does_ work, and as said in the thread, should work perfectly.

Try installing debsums and run it against the KDE 4 packages. Just in case,
make sure you don't have any package without dependencies solved.

You must have a ~/.kde4, because KTorrent stores there important information
about the torrents in progress. If you don't have one, try reinstalling as
Modestas said.

It _does_ work, and as said in the thread, should work perfectly.

Please post your dpkg -l | grep kde from a working Lenny KDE 3.
I've already posted mine[1].

Thus far people asserting that it works have actually been running KDE 4
and/or Sid. The question is whether Lenny's default ktorrent 3 works
with Lenny's default KDE 3.5.9 using only the parts of Lenny's KDE 4
brought in by ktorrent 3's dependencies.

Try installing debsums and run it against the KDE 4 packages.

I already have debsums installs. No problems related to KDE or anything
remotely close to KDE. I've appended the output to this message.

As noted in the thread, I have removed/purged ktorrent 3 and its
KDE 4 dependencies using dpkg, run ktorrent2.2 successfully for some
days, and reinstalled ktorrent 3. No change.

FWIW, my ktorrent2.2 is currently removed (deinstall ok config-files)
not purged, so I can return to a working configuration.

Just in case, make sure you don't have any package without
 dependencies solved.

No missing dependencies (apt-get --dry-run -f install).

You must have a ~/.kde4, because KTorrent stores there important
information about the torrents in progress. If you don't have one, try
 reinstalling as Modestas said.

Modestas indicated that kbuildsycoca4 perhaps with --noincremental
should create ~/.kde4. It does not. What should create ~/.kde4?
Why is it not included in ktorrent 3 dependencies?

If I mkdir ~/.kde4 and then run kbuildsycoca4 --noincremental
nothing is placed in ~/.kde4. I have previously posted my
kbuildsycoca4 output[2]. What more is needed to diagnose why
kbuildsycoca4 is not putting anything in ~/.kde4. FWIW, running
ktorrent itself does not put anything in ~/.kde4 either.

Nothing is scanning /usr/lib/kde4 for the plugins. What should be
scanning /usr/lib/kde4? Why is it not included in ktorrent 3
dependencies?

ktorrent 3 is unable to start service 'khelpcenter'. Does ktorrent 3
work with khelpcenter 4:4.0.0.really.3.5.9.dfsg.1-5 or does it need
khelpcenter4, and if so why is it not a dependency?

ktorrent 3 under KDE 3.5.9 is really ugly, and the fonts are not
anti-aliased. Is there any way to fix this without installing KDE 4?

Thanks,

Hi Mike,

I've been running a pure KDE3 up until now and got curious. Pretty
standard, nothing special

This is what I got when installing ktorrent:

The following NEW packages will be installed:
  kde-icons-oxygen{a} kdebase-runtime{a} kdebase-runtime-bin-kde4{a}
kdebase-runtime-data{a} kdelibs-bin{a} kdelibs5{a}
  kdelibs5-data{a} ktorrent libphonon4{a} libqca2{a} libsoprano4{a}
libstreamanalyzer0{a} libstreams0{a} libstrigiqtdbusclient0{a}
  phonon{a} phonon-backend-xine{a}
The following packages will be REMOVED:
  kdebase-bin-kde3{a}

Running ktorrent after that worked perfectly fine.

I can only suggest what others have already said, that you'll probably
have a misconfigured system.

Cheers,
Michael

 What am I missing?

Install ktorrent2.2 and remove ktorrent.

Perhaps I wasn't clear. My question is why are we defaulting Lenny
users to ktorrent 3.1.1 which will only result in frustration and
cause thousands of users to have to manually remove ktorrent and
install ktorrent2.2?

It would be much more helpful if Lenny shipped with ktorrent at
version 2.2.7. ktorrent 3.1.1 could be packaged as ktorrent3,
so that it is available to people who want to try KDE4 but without
annoying people who need a usable ktorrent.

The Debian KDE team has wisely decided to provide KDE3 as the
default in Lenny, with KDE4 as an option. Ktorrent goes against
this policy and the result is (I choose these words deliberately)
disfunctional, buggy, fragile, and ugly. I don't know how well
ktorrent 3.1.1 behaves when surrounded by a full KDE4 install, but
I can tell you that apt-get install ktorrent in KDE3 Lenny gives
a ktorrent which is painful and embarrassing.

FWIW I did an apt-cache search ktorrent to see if the missing
functionality was available in additional packages, perhaps as
plugins, but no joy there either.

I'm curious: What's the missing functionality of ktorrent 3.1.1?

I've used it since it was the default, more or less, and I've found it stable,
and with much more functionality that I need (I just needed to activate 2
plugins, and none of them is a must have for me).

I don't do anything special with torrents, but I've downloaded a lot of stuff
without problems, though. Maybe it's a plugin that is compromising stability.

If things are as bad as you say, then you should file bugs with the
appropriate severity on ktorrent. At the moment there are no
outstanding bugs of severity higher than normal, and only two normal
bugs.

What am I missing? I don't understand why this piece of KDE 4

in Lenny and maybe have a ktorrent3 package for anyone that wants
to play on the bleeding edge?

Works pretty fine for me :-/

Hi,

It was a huge disappointment. It brings in a lot of KDE 4 libs
which are otherwise not needed and it has maybe 10% of the
 functionality of ktorrent 2.2.
Come on, check your facts before saying anything. The only missing feature is
RSS plugin. So basically there are two reasons ktorrent2.2 package exists:

1) For users who do not want to install KDE4 runtime libraries.
2) For users who can't live without RSS plugin.

Read /usr/share/doc/ktorrent/README.Debian

What is more, KTorrent is not an official KDE package. It can also be used as
a standalone application on any desktop environment/window manager where KDE 3
vs. KDE 4 argument does not matter.

 And it crashes. A lot.
Report bugs with proper backtraces. It has been rock solid for me for a long
time and I basically use it 24/7. Your bugs might help to get later ktorrent
3.1.x upstream bug fix release into Lenny.

What am I missing? I don't understand why this piece of KDE 4
 is being pushed prematurely.
KTorrent 3.x series has already had TWO major stable releases, both of them
with new features and improvements in core code arguably resulting into better
performance. ktorrent 2.2.7 is unmaintained and aging hence it might start to
be banned from trackers soon. Do not forget that Lenny lifetime is long.

Most users will simply have to
 downgrade to ktorrent2.2.
It is interesting that you say downgrade here. That's another reason 3.1.x
is the default. By the way, your most users claim is not backed up. Actually
my opinion is contrary that most users won't downgrade. However, I *do*
understand your arguments, so you have a choice and you are not forced to
upgrade ktorrent 3 by installing ktorrent2.2.

Why not release ktorrent version 2.2
in Lenny and maybe have a ktorrent3 package for anyone that wants
to play on the bleeding edge?
It is by no way bleeding edge. It is a stable release. ktorrent2.2 will be
gone from testing/unstable once Lenny is released and there will be no upgrade
path to ktorrent 3 in the next Debian stable release for this package.
