A few weeks before, I've upgraded several machines from Debian/Stretch (Kernel
4.9) to Debian/Buster (4.19, newer KDE/SDDM).

I'm also seeing the seemingly endless lag between (apparent) Resume at which
SDDM shows its wallpaper graphics and the moment when the password prompt
finally shows (sometimes it would not take input, disappear, then even later
re-appear and finally taking input).

I'm seeing this on exactly one of my machines, which is a sturdy old netbook
with a dualcore N450 Atom chip and Intel integrated graphics.

I'm *not* seeing this on Intel Core Duo, i-5, i-7 and Xeon machines. The
password
prompt shows as quickly as it used to under Debian/Stretch.

Once I'm logged in, the oldish Atom is as quick as can be expected, but it
certainly *is* somewhat slower than under Stretch. That might indeed be
due to some processor bug mitigations.

However, it seems to me that the enormous lag at the SDDM login prompt
might have a cause which is not directly (or not entirely) due to Intel
microcode updates and Kernel mitigations.

Just 2 cent,

Christian

SDDM and Save dialogues slow

2019-05-28 Thread Andreas v. Heydwolff
Hello,

I'm on Stretch with backports and a regular Stretch KDE installation on
a ThinkPad X1 Yoga (Skylake CPU and graphics, self compiled latest
kernel 4.14, now .122; a stock kernel 4.9 or 4.19 doesn't help).

Since some update a few weeks ago resume does wake up the screensaver
and mouse pointer, but the login box appears only after *half a minute*
or more whereas previously it was there immediately. This somewhat
defeats the purpose of Sleep and Resume. The battery no longer gets
detected, and powerdevil freezes and/or shows no options for closing the
lid.

Dolphin also takes a long time to start instead of doing so in an
instant as before, in a similar fashion Save dialogues in kwrite and
libreoffice take half a minute or more as well to appear. It used to be
a snappy dual boot machine. Windows sleep and resume works flawlessly.

Any ideas what may be causing this? Perhaps a recent BIOS update for
some SPECTRE mitigation? The latest Intel microcode of April? Some other
Debian update that is somehow but not obviously related to KDE? dmesg
shows an "incompatible lid switch or some such, but this was no problem
before (although dmesg never reported it).

Regards,
Andreas
