I've been using Kppp for a while (KDE 2.2.1), and have always had
problems with its reliability.

My system is Debian potato, kernel 2.4.3-2.4.4 and pppd 2.4.0. Ppp
support is modular.

I very frequently get "The pppd daemon died unexpectedly!" and "Exit
status:16", just after the "Connect 45333/ARQ/V90/LAPM/V42BIS" in the
debug window.

/var/log/syslog shows the following:

Apr 29 12:24:36 venus modprobe: modprobe: Can't locate module ppp0
Apr 29 12:24:36 venus pppd[1021]: pppd 2.4.0 started by chris, uid 1000
Apr 29 12:24:36 venus pppd[1021]: Using interface ppp0
Apr 29 12:24:36 venus pppd[1021]: Connect: ppp0 <--> /dev/ttyS1
Apr 29 12:24:38 venus pppd[1021]: Hangup (SIGHUP)
Apr 29 12:24:38 venus pppd[1021]: Modem hangup
Apr 29 12:24:38 venus pppd[1021]: Connection terminated.
Apr 29 12:24:38 venus pppd[1021]: Exit.

and /etc/modules.conf containts the following:

alias char-major-108 ppp_generic
alias /dev/ppp ppp_generic
alias tty-ldisc-3 ppp_async
alias tty-ldisc-14 ppp_synctty
alias ppp-compress-21 bsd_comp
alias ppp-compress-24 ppp_deflate
alias ppp-compress-26 ppp_deflate
alias ppp0 ppp

WVdial always dials reliably. Does anybody have any ideas how to make it
more reliable?

Cheers,
