Thanks Andrej - I was indeed being blind and not reading the instructions properly. I can't test the theory now cos I've already gone ahead and installed KDE 4.4.5 from stable, but when I get another Debian up in a VM I'll try again. (Thanks too to Martin, whose response I also failed to read properly) >> "aptitude install kde-minimal" gives : No candidate version found >> for kde-minimal This will never work because, with all repositories I've now checked, there is no such package (which probably means http://pkg-kde.alioth.debian.org/kde4.html should have the reference to it removed). Which is great ... and which tells me that the apt-get/aptitude religious war has become a bit more serious since last I understood. It's OT for this list (and I don't want to ingite any flame fests here), so can anyone point me at a discussion or explanation of the current state of play with apt package managers ? I thought the important difference was that aptitude keeps track of automatically installed packages (while apt-get does not), so it can get rid of them later when they're no longer needed. It now looks like aptitude resolves dependencies in a very different way from apt-get, and I therefore need a better understanding of these tools. > Please note that I lack time to correct an issue with USB automount > (amd64 and i386) and security updates. > > If you prefer a stable solution you should stick to the official > packages. Thanks for the warning. While it might be possible to roll my own security fixes in the longer term, I think the lack of USB automounting would bug the hell out of me in the short term, so I'll stick to stable 4.4.3 on the primary system, and may have a look at the backport in a VM later on. Installing KDE 4.6 Backport On Squeeze
[I realise the various unofficial KDE backports are not the primary topic on this list, so this email is just in case my question is Frequent, and/or there's anybody here with any obvious answers. TIA.] This is the first time I've tried installing Debian KDE since 3.3 on 'sarge', so please be gentle :) I have just installed a fresh and bare-bones (no desktop) 'squeeze' system on an AMD64 box, using the netinst 6.0.4 CD, and I'd now like to install KDE 4.6.5 from http://www.debian-desktop.org/, but am unsure what is a sensible way of installing a useful chunk of the desktop. I've been following the advice at http://pkg-kde.alioth.debian.org/kde4.html and http://www.debian-desktop.org/doku.php/start and I've tried all the obvious meta-packages, with these results : "aptitude install kde (or kde-standard or kde-full)" gives : The following packages have unmet dependencies: kde-standard: Depends: polkit-kde-1 (>= 0.99) but it is not going to be installed. plasma-scriptengine-python: Depends: python-kde4 (>= 4:4.6.80) but 4:4.4.5-3 is to be installed. plasma-desktop: Breaks: plasma-widget-networkmanagement (< 0.1+git20110422.810bc16-1+) but 0.1~svn1141976-1 is to be installed. kdebase-runtime-data: Breaks: plasma-widget-networkmanagement (< 0.1+git20110422.810bc16-1+) but 0.1~svn1141976-1 is to be installed. "aptitude install kde-minimal" gives : No candidate version found for kde-minimal The least broken option is this : "aptitude install kde-plasma-desktop" gives : The following packages have unmet dependencies: plasma-scriptengine-python: Depends: python-kde4 (>= 4:4.6.80) but it is not going to be installed. Would that last one give me a good result ? Does a missing 'plasma-scriptengine-python' matter much ? As for the others, I don't think I need 'plasma-widget-networkmanagement', but I suspect 'polkit-kde-1' is rather important ... any comments ? Anyway, any insights into all this would be gratefully received. [Yes, I could just install the KDE 4.4.3 that comes with 'squeeze' - I quite like it, but I thought I'd just have a look at the 4.6.5 backport.] PS: what's with the wacky version numbers (5:66) of stable packages like 'kde', 'kde-full' and 'kde-plasma-desktop' ? Why not '4:4.4.3' ? Cheers Nick Boyce -- "Bob has a problem requiring secure communication. He decides to use certificates. KDE 4.6 on wheezy has no desktop effects
Hello. With some recenty upgrades Xorg can't find my video driver and KDE has loosed the desktop effects. You can fix it temporarily by doing this, changing "i915" by any other driver your pc use. ln -s /usr/lib/dri/i915_dri.so /usr/lib/i386-linux-gnu/dri/i915_dri.so It helps reading the Xorg log. cat /var/log/Xorg.0.log | grep error If anybody here is related with the Xorg team/list would be great if you could report to them. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-kde-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of "unsubscribe". KDE 4.6 constantly smashing my configs & data - nearly unusable....
hi guys, after a lot of problems with the squeezy/weezy versions of KDE, I updated to 4.6.1 from exerimental in the hope that the varios bugs and problems I was facing would go away... unfortunatley ther are evem more - so much that I think of leaving KDE I runing deb-testing on a MacBook 3.1 (intel core2Duo, 4G RAM) laptop screen LVDS1, 1280x800 and ext. monitor via DVI1 1680x1050 (my prim. screen) kernel 2.6.38-2 (experiemental) 1. after every reboot/restart/login of KDE, the settings from LVDS1 are back to 1024x768 - I have to manualy do the settings again and again. even if they seem to be correctly default-saved in .kde/share/config/startupconfig: krandrrc_display_startupcommands="xrandr --output \"LVDS1\" --pos 0x0 --mode 1280x800 --refresh 59.9095 xrandr --output \"DVI1\" --pos 1280x0 --mode 1680x1050 --refresh 59.8833 xrandr --noprimary" also, after reboot/restart of kde: 2. my dashboards-layout is always scrambled and often loss of configuration some of them are not started anymore, 3. since the update to 4.6.1, the toolbar does not resize correct. once it was smaler (due to screenconfig error) it does not resize to full width of the screen. only 1280 instead of 1680 aka LVDS1 instead of DVI1-width 4. after a shutdown/init level without KDE, it happend every 2nd/3rd time that: kmail is loosing mails, (last recieved mails are empty...) kmail is loosing configuration constantly: like filtersettings, view-setup, etc. but they are still in the config files!!! 5. bluetooth-monolith is started, but does not find any adapter, after each reboot. after manualy restarting bluetoothd deamon while KDE is running, it finds the adapter again. 6. my apple bluetoothmouse buttens do not working anymore (sinc 4.6). I can move the mouse/arrow, but that's all. 7. kwallet and other apps constantly losing ther config/data files 8. knetwork does not start automated connect and/or looses config-files... 9. comming back from suspend (lid close) funktion keys ar often not working. have to restart dbus & pommed helps most of the times. 10. can not set konqueror to use webkit. khtml only. ...and a lot minor problems more, which I even can't remeber at the moment all in all, since I installed 4.6 ca. 5 days ago, I have to repair my system every day, doing constant backups (1h) of my .kde-dir. and reply nearly at every start a couple of config files - what a mess. since the update from weezy smashed KDE completley, I moved .kde out of the way and started over from scratch (-> website: no help for a testing-update like that) I'm glad to help, provide any data etc. if someone jumps on these varios bugs... cheers chymian -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-kde-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of "unsubscribe". nepomuk / strigi in KDE 4.6
Heyho! I tried once more to enable nepomuk + strigi. It's now quite nice load-wise, but it leaks memory. After ca. 10h, I've got "nepomukservicestub" processes taking up all my memory, with the machine swapping like mad. I also had to wipe .kde/share/apps/nepomuk/ before virtuoso would run (segfault at start else.) cheers -- vbi -- Es ist merkwürdig, daß ein mittelmäßiger Mensch oft vollkommen recht haben kann und doch nichts damit durchsetzt. -- Christian Morgenstern signature.asc Description: This is a digitally signed message part.

Re: kde 4.6
I didn't help, that's true. I'm too busy involved with other projects outside Debian, I'm just a happy user. I greatly appreciate the free time that's spend in Debian by lots of people! But that's not why these questions rise. It's because we aren't properly informed over the progress, we were told it would be uploaded in early march. It's almost April now ;-) These questions would not have been asked if there was a clear progress schedule to follow. Maybe if there was such a progress schedule, then people can see more clear when and where to step in to help with their skills. This is also something that's needed for the projects I'm involved with. So when I've stumbled to a practical solution for such a schedule then I let you know. Maybe someone already knows an exciting solution for this? hello everybody! As everybody know, we'll soon have kde 4.6 \o/\o/ I just have a question: will Kmess will be updated in the same time, or maybe later? because a bug make the sid's version of kmess unusable (not really a bug. it's because of microsoft if I've well understood) and the last release seems to fix this. anyway, a big thanks to the KDE Team!!! xinouch PS: It's the first time I use a mailing list. Usual policy of the Qt/KDE debian team to wait for upstream release versions of KDE. I.e. 4.6 instead of 4.6 RC1. I love to see KDE 4.6 packages. I also like to hear about the plans for KDEPIM 4.6. I am a bit vary about it. On one side I like to be able to install packages of it in order to test it early and till Wheezy there is still a lot of time to polish it. On the other hand I want to be able to downgrade KDEPIM 4.4.8 or whats current in that series easily when 4.6 does not work good enough. So I think packages of KDEPIM 4.6 would be nice, but there should also be some for 4.4.8 or so. So maybe KDEPIM 4.6 should stay in experimental for now. Well KDE 4.6 will stay in experimental until Squeeze is released anyhow.
