I'm pretty sure was is the same as this bug:

https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=113401

I fixed it by running (as root):

$ chmod a+rx /var/run/xauth

Anyway, if it is still helpful, here is the kdm.log from when the error
occurred:

Note that your system uses syslog. All of kdm's internally generated messages
(i.e., not from libraries and external programs/scripts it uses) go to the
daemon.* syslog facility; check your syslog configuration to find out to which
file(s) it is logged. PAM logs messages related to authentication to
authpriv.*.

KDM doesn't work

2011-04-08 Thread Torquil Macdonald Sørensen
Hi all!

I have installed the KDE 4.6.1 from http://qt-kde.debian.net/ onto my Sid.

However, kdm will not start. After booting, when X is started, I'm simply
dropped back into text mode.

In /var/log/syslog I found the following error message:

Apr 8 21:20:51 asus kdm: :0[1839]: Received unknown or unexpected command -2
from greeter
Apr 8 21:20:51 asus kdm: :0[1839]: Abnormal termination of greeter for
display :0, code 1, signal 0

Any ideas? Meanwhile I'm using XDM as a substitute.

Best regards
Torquil Sørensen

The problem is that dannyS's backport/build is too old. Therefore people using
woody using the older woody packages are not getting that because
xlibs-static-pic wasn't part of that package set IIRC.

Does anyone know why this actually doesn't just work? XFree86 4.2 btw
includes xlibs-pic as well, 4.3 includes xlibs-static-pic however it
provides xlibs-pic so this should still work, right? Maybe the issue
is the people using the 4.3 backport have to manually install
xlibs-static-pic for it to satisfy the dependency (iow apt-get won't
automatically resolve the issue).

Hello,

Dependency on xlibs-pic is new for kdelibs4-dev, so is it really needed
?
And the real problem is that a lot of people using Woody use unofficial
XFree ports with newer version than 4.1.0.

Why that? I don't see why kdelibs4-dev should not depend on X11
package?

There's still a problem with kdelibs4-dev which depends on xlibs-pic
which depends on xlibs which depends on Xfree so a lot of problems.

For kdeprint use apt-get dist-upgrade. It requires efax or hylafax-client or
mgetty-fax, you need to install one of those.

The KDM issue is fixed, so you can go ahead and upgrade.

FWIW, when I did apt-get upgrade, three packages were not upgraded from
3.1.3-0woody1 - kdebase, kdeprint and kdm.

Internationalization of kdm doesn't work

2001-04-09 Thread Malte Cornils
Hi,

I'm having a problem with the i18n for the kdm chooser; although I have
installed the kde-i18n-de language pack and it contains the correct .mo file
for kdmchooser, I only get the English strings in kdmchooser. My kdmrc has
the entries

[Locale]
Country=de
Language=de

added by the kdm control module. Can anyone verify this?
I'm using kdm 2.1.1-3 from Debian unstable.

How have you installed XFree86 4.0.2 (from Debian package or directly from the
files given at xfree86 site). I get very strange problem too with kdm, the
installation of Debian potato Xfree package has solved it.

Some time computer science seems to be more "magic" than "scientific"...

P.S. I am working with potato.

kdm doesn't work

2001-03-04 Thread csj
kdm doesn't work as expected on my testing/potato installation with
kernel 2.4.1, XFree86 4.0.2 and kde 2.1. It logs me in but when I try
to log out it hangs tough such that a hard reboot is necessary.

I have been using gdm. Does anyone else have the problem? Or is it
just another YMMV?
