That's pretty cool. I had no idea this feature existed.

Well let me chime in also. I have been meaning to complain about this for a

few months back that this is actually a feature.

Be that as it may. This feature is of no use to me, and I find the boxes with
letters extremely annoying. I would rather they not show.

Actually it will disable it only in konqueror. When in KMail or KNode things
won't change. I guess if anyone wants them disabled it too, he or she put it
in khtmlrc file. I haven't tried it yet, so don't blame me if this doesn't
work.

One of the reasons this stuff is there is to comply with the rules on
making computers Accessible to those with physical disabilities. In
several countries such behaviour is strongly recommended and is
quite likely to become mandatory.

It is also useful on laptops, where controlling the mouse with a
touchpad is never quite as easy as a real mouse.

There is a control panel setting to turn it off as I understand it.

If I may also comment, this feature activates (on my system anyway)
if XINE is playing while Konqueror is open. After some 15 seconds, up
pop all the little shortcut-letters. This is especially annoying if
I'm typing in a form, because the active keys take precedence and the
next letter I hit activates the link rather than continuing the word
I was typing.

I, too, would like a check-box to be able to turn this feature off.

Maybe that is triggered by the screensaver wakeup (fake key press
events) which xine sends in regular intervals to keep the screensaver
from starting. These can be disabled in xine's Settings Setup gui
menu. That is probably the safest option if you want to use other
programs while xine plays something.

I would categorize that as a workaround at most. Unless someone can show me a
Konqueror/KControl option to disable this, I am not satisfied with this

Nevertheless it should be possible to turn off.

It is also useful on laptops, where controlling the mouse with a

At home I use my laptop all the time. I find the touchpad quite convinient
actually. With edge dragging enabled it is just as good as a mouse for
regular work. It has problems with accuracy in graphics applications of
course.

There is a control panel setting to turn it off as I understand it.

I looked but couldn't find any. I looked through the accessability settings in
KControl, and browsing behaviour in Konqueror.

http://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=109404

Bug #109404 has been marked as fixed for some time. I am uncertain as to
whether a configuration option has been added to the konquerors preferences
dialog or if it just exists as an option in the configuration file.

I really think there needs to be an option somewhere in the GUI to turn this
off.

I can't find it in the GUI either, but apparently, from what has been said
here today, there is already code to read the configuration file and act on
some secret setting. If it's there (and I haven't actually looked for it)
then adding a way to control it via the configuration page would be a trivial
hack, and a great opportunity for some whining user to step up and join the
ranks of helpful open source contributors by sending them a patch to address
this complaint. If it hasn't already been fixed in CVS, that is.

konqueror alphabets all over the place

2006-03-11 Thread kamaraju kusumanchi
In konqueror, if I hold the control key for a long time there are
alphabets displayed all over the webpage. The letters are displayed in
square yellow boxes.

What are these alphabets? Are they useful in any way or is it a bug? If
it is a feature, where is it documented?

They are shortcuts to links. So that you don't have to use your mouse to click

You must be right saying they are shortcuts. But I would call it a bug:
what's the use of having all those boxes on the monitor?

Uh, so that you can use the keyboard instead of the mouse? If you are browsing
a site, and you want to enter a link, you simply press ctrl, and the link
gets a letter, you press the letter, and there you go. It's not a bug.
