That's exactly what happened here. And I only changed one option and then
changed it back when it didn't help. Oh well, I can live with that. I was
worried that the change in behavior was permanent.

Searching 'desktop icons' in kde-core-devel at lists.kde.org found this
2 week old message:

 http://lists.kde.org/?l=kde-core-devel&m=99985500818022&w=2

So if the problem still occurs in the new 2.2.1 release then it's bug.
For < 2.2.1 it's now a documented feature ;)

It's happened to me at least twice, and both times I've struggled through the
various menus and options with no direct effect; however, logging off and then
back on seems to have fixed the problem. Whether it was simply logging off/on
alone that did it, or this in combination with changing of some of the options,
I'm not sure. If it happens again, I'll try and pay more attention to what I do
so I can report back.

If the problem persists, perhaps check if its with all users or just one? If
its just the one account, you might be able to create a new profile and copy
over your old settings/data bit-by-bit to work around the problem.

Hope this helps,
Mike

Interestingly, I saw this behavior when I logged in this morning. Just got
home from work and when I logged in my desktop is back to its normal self. I
had to rearrange the icons manually, but they stayed where I put them.

Yes, should be fixed in 2.2.1. There were some threads about it on
in kde-devel or kde-core-devel (search lists.kde.org).
Someone (David Faure?) also described a workaround.

No.
Maybe in 2.2.1 ?

self-aligning icons on the desktop

2001-09-19 Thread Bud Rogers
Suddenly the icons on my desktop insist on being aligned vertically down the
left side of the screen, and in an order of their own choosing. If I drag
them somewhere else they snap right back where they were. The only thing I
have found that changes that behavior at all is

Preferences->Look & Feel->Desktop-> Align icons Vertically on Desktop

and that just arranges them horizontally along the top of the screen.

I'm tracking debian unstable and kde 2.2 and this seems to be new behavior.
I much prefer to arrange icons around my desktop in my own way. Anyone else
seeing this? Have you found a way to turn it off?
