Bug#357224: Kernel panic after udev update
I upgraded to initramfs-tools version 0.56 and made this test: 1. dpkg -i udev_0.087-1_i386.deb 2. reboot (system was bootable) 3. dpkg -i udev_0.087-2_i386.deb 4. reboot (system was bootable) 5. dpkg -i initramfs-tools_0.53c_all.deb 6. reboot (Kernel panic - not syncing: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on unknown-block(3,6)) My problem was that after update from udev_0.087-1_i386.deb to udev_0.087-2_i386.deb system was in unbootable state. I was able to solve the problem manually by reinstalling (big gun but works) udev, linux-image and initramfs-tools. I think that my problem was solved between initramfs-tools_0.53c_all.deb and initramfs-tools_0.56_all.deb. Thanks for your time. Bug#358288: linux-image-2.6.16-1-686: Cannot load module acpi-cpufreq with 2.6.16 on ThinkPad X41
Package: linux-image-2.6.16-1-686 Version: 2.6.16-1 Severity: normal Linux kernel version 2.6.16 broke cpufreq support for me. I can no longer load the module acpi-cpufreq, which means that software such as cpufreqd doesn't work. Example: # modprobe acpi-cpufreq FATAL: Error inserting acpi_cpufreq (/lib/modules/2.6.16-1-686/kernel/arch/i386/kernel/cpu/cpufreq/acpi-cpufreq.ko): No such device This is on a IBM/Lenovo ThinkPad X41[1]. It worked in 2.6.15. On an IBM ThinkPad X31[2] it works in 2.6.16 as well, but on the X41 it's broken. Hi, Security focus list a remote buffer overflow vulnerability. http://www.securityfocus.com/bid/17178 I can't find a CVE for it yet, so I cant see if you've got it under control on your subversion patch tracking page. Bug#358273: linux-image-2.6.15-1-686: tg3 module causes partial freeze when cpu frequency is throttled
Package: linux-image-2.6.15-1-686 Version: 2.6.15-8 Severity: important After a fresh boot, the system partially freezes. This means that everything stops for two seconds. The processing resumes for a second. Then everything stops again for two seconds. Then resumes for a second. An so on... ("Two seconds" and "a second" are just figures of speech: I haven't timed the cycle.) I'm usually in X Windows when that happens. Because the partial freeze allows for some processing, I'm able to switch to a console, log in as root and turn off the interface that uses tg3. As soon as I do that, the machine unfreezes. If I unload/reload tg3 and bring back the interface up, the partial freezes comes back after a few minutes. Sometimes, tg3 won't initialize after a reload. This happens only if cpufreq is used to throttle the cpu frequency. It does not matter what throttling method is used: both using the ondemand governor and powernowd (which uses the userspace governor to switch frequencies) produce the problem. The only way to avoid it is to avoid frequency throttling while tg3 is loaded. Note that if tg3 is not loaded (e.g. when I use the wireless network), cpu frequency throttling with cpufreq does not cause any problem no matter what method is used to throttle the frequency. The machine is a Dell Inspiron 600m, BIOS revision A17. After the System Information and debconf information (generated by Emacs' debian-bug command), I've included the output from lspci -vv and a section from my kern.log that shows events from booting up to shutting down the machine. (Note that the device controled by tg3 starts as eth0 and then is renamed eth1 by ifrename.) In the kern.log portion, my comments are marked with "###". -- System Information: Debian Release: testing/unstable APT prefers unstable APT policy: (990, 'unstable'), (500, 'testing'), (500, 'stable') Architecture: i386 (i686) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/bash Kernel: Linux 2.6.15-1-686 Locale: LANG=en_US.UTF-8, LC_CTYPE=en_US.UTF-8 (charmap=UTF-8) Versions of packages linux-image-2.6.15-1-686 depends on: ii module-init-tools 3.2.2-2tools for managing Linux kernel mo ii yaird [linux-initramfs-tool] 0.0.12-8 Yet Another mkInitRD Versions of packages linux-image-2.6.15-1-686 recommends: pn libc6-i686 (no description available) -- debconf information: linux-image-2.6.15-1-686/postinst/kimage-is-a-directory: linux-image-2.6.15-1-686/preinst/overwriting-modules-2.6.15-1-686: true linux-image-2.6.15-1-686/postinst/depmod-error-initrd-2.6.15-1-686: false linux-image-2.6.15-1-686/postinst/bootloader-error-2.6.15-1-686: linux-image-2.6.15-1-686/postinst/bootloader-test-error-2.6.15-1-686: linux-image-2.6.15-1-686/preinst/lilo-has-ramdisk: linux-image-2.6.15-1-686/preinst/failed-to-move-modules-2.6.15-1-686: linux-image-2.6.15-1-686/postinst/old-system-map-link-2.6.15-1-686: true linux-image-2.6.15-1-686/preinst/abort-install-2.6.15-1-686: linux-image-2.6.15-1-686/preinst/abort-overwrite-2.6.15-1-686: linux-image-2.6.15-1-686/preinst/bootloader-initrd-2.6.15-1-686: true linux-image-2.6.15-1-686/prerm/would-invalidate-boot-loader-2.6.15-1-686: true linux-image-2.6.15-1-686/preinst/lilo-initrd-2.6.15-1-686: true linux-image-2.6.15-1-686/postinst/old-initrd-link-2.6.15-1-686: true linux-image-2.6.15-1-686/postinst/old-dir-initrd-link-2.6.15-1-686: true * linux-image-2.6.15-1-686/preinst/already-running-this-2.6.15-1-686: linux-image-2.6.15-1-686/preinst/initrd-2.6.15-1-686: linux-image-2.6.15-1-686/postinst/depmod-error-2.6.15-1-686: false linux-image-2.6.15-1-686/postinst/create-kimage-link-2.6.15-1-686: true linux-image-2.6.15-1-686/prerm/removing-running-kernel-2.6.15-1-686: true linux-image-2.6.15-1-686/preinst/elilo-initrd-2.6.15-1-686: true -- output of lspci -vv: :00:00.0 Host bridge: Intel Corporation 82855PM Processor to I/O Controller (rev 03) Subsystem: Dell: Unknown device 011e Control: I/O- Mem+ BusMaster+ SpecCycle- MemWINV- VGASnoop- ParErr- Stepping- SERR+ FastB2B- Status: Cap+ 66MHz- UDF- FastB2B+ ParErr- DEVSEL=fast >TAbort- SERR- TAbort- SERR- Reset- FastB2B- :00:1d.0 USB Controller: Intel Corporation 82801DB/DBL/DBM (ICH4/ICH4-L/ICH4-M) USB UHCI Controller #1 (rev 01) (prog-if 00 [UHCI]) Subsystem: Dell: Unknown device 011e Control: I/O+ Mem- BusMaster+ SpecCycle- MemWINV- VGASnoop- ParErr- Stepping- SERR- FastB2B- Status: Cap- 66MHz- UDF- FastB2B+ ParErr- DEVSEL=medium >TAbort- SERR- TAbort- SERR- TAbort- SERR- TAbort- SERR- TAbort- SERR- Reset- FastB2B- :00:1f.0 ISA bridge: Intel Corporation 82801DBM (ICH4-M) LPC Interface Bridge (rev 01) Control: I/O+ Mem+ BusMaster+ SpecCycle+ MemWINV- VGASnoop- ParErr- Stepping- SERR+ FastB2B- Status: Cap- 66MHz- UDF- FastB2B+ ParErr- DEVSEL=medium >TAbort- SERR- TAbort- SERR- Region 1: I/O ports at Region 2:

Bug#357538: grub is a work-around
I can now confirm that I can start the 2.6.15 kernel after switching the loader to grub. Note that the default setup of grub (with update-grub) uses raw disk devices for the name of the root partition. I modified it as in the second line below # kopt=root=/dev/scsi/host0/bus0/target0/lun0/part8 ro # kopt_2_6=root=/dev/evms/newroot ro so that things worked right. I believe that with the default the same problem (root device not recognized as evms) would recur. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? Bug#274924: fixed in ALSA
Hi, my recording problems in this bug report, traced from gnome-sound-recorder to nm256-audio, are solved, as this OSS module is obsolete and a patch fixing the crippling problems with snd-nm256 is in ALSA-CVS as of last week (to be included in kernel 2.6.17, I hope). Thus, from my point of view, this bug can be closed. The thing is, I feel a bit bad about "hijacking" this bug as the original reporter's problems, though solved/changed, seem have little to do with the kernel... So I leave the decision to you. Debian bug tracking system administrator (administrator, Debian Bugs database) --- Begin Message --- Package: initramfs-tools Version: 0.53c Severity: important Tags: patch I just upgraded a Compaq ProLiant DL360 with Debian/etch to use the 2.6.15-1-686-smp kernel, and ran into a problem in the process. The RAID controller module, cpqarray, was not included in the initrd by default, and the boot failed as the root file system was missing. I managed to work around the problem by adding it to /etc/mkinitramfs/modules, but believe it is better to make sure the kernel module is installed by default to get it working out of the box on this hardware. I tried running update-initramfs with the -v option to get some info on the kernel modules included by default, but it was rather silent. Perhaps it should report the list of kernel modules included in the initrd? This was all the output I got: # update-initramfs -k 2.6.15-1-686-smp -u -v Generating /boot/initrd.img-2.6.15-1-686-smp # Here is a patch to add the cpqarray module to the list of SCSI modules to load. --- /usr/share/initramfs-tools/hook-functions.orig 2006-02-27 10:50:38.0 +0100 +++ /usr/share/initramfs-tools/hook-functions 2006-03-20 17:03:50.0 +0100 @@ -153,7 +153,7 @@ done ;; scsi) - for x in 3w-9xxx 3w- a100u2x aacraid advansys ahci aic79xx aic7xxx ata_piix atari_scsi atp870u BusLogic cciss ch dc395x dmx3191d dpt_i2o eata fdomain ibmvscsic initio ipr ips isp1020 lpfc max_scsi mac53c94 megaraid megaraid_mbox megaraid_mm mesh mptfc mptscsih mptsas mptspi nsp32 osst qla1280 qla2100 qla2200 qla2300 qla2322 qla2xxx qla6312 qlogicfas408 qlogicfc sata_promise sata_nv sata_qstor sata_sil sata_sis sata_svw sata_sx4 sata_uli sata_via sata_vsc scsi_mod scsi_transport_fc scsi_transport_iscsi scsi_transport_spi sd_mod sym53c8xx tmscsim; do + for x in 3w-9xxx 3w- a100u2x aacraid advansys ahci aic79xx aic7xxx ata_piix atari_scsi atp870u BusLogic cciss ch dc395x dmx3191d dpt_i2o eata fdomain ibmvscsic initio ipr ips isp1020 lpfc max_scsi mac53c94 megaraid megaraid_mbox megaraid_mm mesh mptfc mptscsih mptsas mptspi nsp32 osst qla1280 qla2100 qla2200 qla2300 qla2322 qla2xxx qla6312 qlogicfas408 qlogicfc sata_promise sata_nv sata_qstor sata_sil sata_sis sata_svw sata_sx4 sata_uli sata_via sata_vsc scsi_mod scsi_transport_fc scsi_transport_iscsi scsi_transport_spi sd_mod sym53c8xx tmscsim cpqarray; do manual_add_modules "${x}" done ;; Friendly, -- Petter Reinholdtsen --- End Message --- --- Begin Message --- Source: initramfs-tools Source-Version: 0.57b We believe that the bug you reported is fixed in the latest version of initramfs-tools, which is due to be installed in the Debian FTP archive: initramfs-tools_0.57b.dsc to pool/main/i/initramfs-tools/initramfs-tools_0.57b.dsc initramfs-tools_0.57b.tar.gz to pool/main/i/initramfs-tools/initramfs-tools_0.57b.tar.gz initramfs-tools_0.57b_all.deb to pool/main/i/initramfs-tools/initramfs-tools_0.57b_all.deb A summary of the changes between this version and the previous one is attached. Needs a rather complicated setup and needs to be uptodate with the debian glibc. - Build against static glibc. - Build against static dietlibc if possible. dietlibc is a small and static only libc. As it don't include any shared parts, the cross compile environment needs no complete bootstrap to use it. Affected are currently my snapshots which are mostly cross compiled and the m68k packages.
