Bug#242866: updated tg3.c patch

I can also set up tg3 files for the firmware-nonfree package, and supply kernel images for i386 and/or amd64. Testers? I could test it. Where can I find the firmware files? Bug#383600: behaviour of update-initramfs -u has changed, only updates latest kernel initrd
Package: initramfs-tools Version: 0.74 Severity: important I can't pinpoint the exact release but the behaviour of update-initramfs -u has changed recently. update-initramsfs -u is used in several postinst scripts and formerly updated the initrd of all installed kernels. The new behaviour is, to only update the initrd of the latest instlled kernel, which is wrong imho. E.g. you have kernel 2.6.16 and 2.6.17 installed and you are currently running 2.6.16, update-initramfs -u will only update the 2.6.17 initrd. I suggest to revert to the old behaviour and make -u update all installed kernels. Atm I have to specify each kernel separately vi -k to update them all. Atm I have to specify each kernel separately vi -k to update them all. Why should one update _all_ initramfs images when beeing interested in only single one? Why should I be only interested in only a single one? If I install e.g. the uswsusp package (which has to update the initrd because it has to install a resume binary there) I'd expect the package to work with all kernels I have installed not only a single one. In addition only the newest kernel installed is updated, which is very confusing imho. If it all, it should update the initrd of the currently running kernel. This also increases the risk for breaking ALL WORKING initramfs images in the case where a new bug in initramfs-tools appears. As you already said, if it's a bug in initramfs-tools, it should be fixed there and not prevent update-initramfs from doing the right thing. It won't help you anyways if you have only one kernel installed. And your argument can actually be held against you: what if an update of initramfs-tools fixes a (grave/security related) bug. Wouldn't you expect that all installed kernels are updated accordingly. I don't think normal users will know that they have to run update-initramfs -u -k 1.2.3 for all installed kernel versions. We can't expect that more unexperienced users will have to do that manually. So this is even a security related issue. I recommend closing this bug report unless you provide a good explanation. Also, the social contract says clearly that : 1) we care about our users *AND* free software. 2) we have created the non-free section to put non-free software in it that may be needed for our users. What else do you want ? polite, reread the social contract, and abide by what you agreed to when you joined debian. When I joined Debian we cared about free software. Not free firmwares. and in what world do you live where you could even start to imagine that the firmwares are not software ? They clearly are not hardware, since you cannot directly touch them. Also, i think all of you are taking the wrong discourse, and there is no way you can be right. You should instead try the following discourse : 1) The firmware in question (those that are not plain register dumps) are indeed non-free, since they are clearly software, often assembly software, compiled with some assembler tool, and we lack sources for them (but someone has said source, or at least had it at some time point. 2) But we argue that we should still distribute it in main, for reason such and such. Among those reason, there are a few which come to my mind out of hand : 1) We consider firmware as being part of the hardware, not really the software. 2) If we consider a hardware piece which needs an uploadable firmware, even if the firmware in question is non-free, it is still globally more free than an equivalent piece of hardware where all is hardcoded in silicon. And so on, it is always better to be honest and true to oneself, than to try to argue obvious wrong stuff, like you have been doing, and furthermore, seeing that there is no way you can honestly defend your point, and you know that inside yourself, so you ressort to vulgarities and barkings to get your point accross. Bug#380272: kernel-image-2.6-686-smp: cpqarray module fails to detect arrays
Hi Maks, I have confirmed that loading cpqarray first fixes the problem on several systems now. I have also realized that when this is the case, the sym53c8xx driver is not needed or loaded. I thought this was noteworthy. It appears that your presumption was correct that the sym53c8xx and cpqarray modules do not play nicely. Is this something that can be handled in the initramfs automatically instead of forcing everyone running these systems to update their /etc/initramfs-tools/modules file? Thanks again!!! Bug#380272: kernel-image-2.6-686-smp: cpqarray module fails to detect arrays
Hello Joshua, On Fri, Aug 18, 2006 at 09:59:16AM -0600, Joshua Rubin wrote: I have confirmed that loading cpqarray first fixes the problem on several systems now. I have also realized that when this is the case, the sym53c8xx driver is not needed or loaded. I thought this was noteworthy. It appears that your presumption was correct that the sym53c8xx and cpqarray modules do not play nicely. The problem is because they both claim support for the same PCI Ids: cpqarray.c, static const struct pci_device_id cpqarray_pci_device_id[] = { { PCI_VENDOR_ID_NCR, PCI_DEVICE_ID_NCR_53C1510, 0x0E11, 0x4048, 0, 0, 0}, /* LC2 */ { PCI_VENDOR_ID_NCR, PCI_DEVICE_ID_NCR_53C1510, 0x0E11, 0x4040, 0, 0, 0}, /* Integrated Array */ }; and sym53c8xx_2/sym_glue.c, static struct pci_device_id sym2_id_table[] __devinitdata = { { PCI_VENDOR_ID_LSI_LOGIC, PCI_DEVICE_ID_LSI_53C1510, PCI_ANY_ID, PCI_ANY_ID, 0, 0, 0UL }, { PCI_VENDOR_ID_LSI_LOGIC, PCI_DEVICE_ID_NCR_53C1510, PCI_ANY_ID, PCI_ANY_ID, 0, 0, 0UL }, /* new */ }; More correctly, the problem is because sym2 is claiming support for all devices with these PCI device/vendor id. Can we get the output of lspci -v output from your machine? If LSI was kind, the PCI class might be different between the two, or some other clue might be there to differentiate them. Is this something that can be handled in the initramfs automatically instead of forcing everyone running these systems to update their /etc/initramfs-tools/modules file? The easiest thing to do from the initramfs point of view is to simply load cpqarray in preference to sym53c8xx. Just grep for update-initramfs in /var/lib/dpkg/info/*.postinst. I get uswsusp, cryptsetup, mdadm and udev on my machine. They all simply call update-initramfs -u. This means that security updates of these packages are not automatically applied to all installed kernels which is a major security issue imho. Your whining has the opposite effect: Your wrapping of valuable info in big chunks of whining and repetitive noise risk not even noticing your contributions! yeah, as opposed to you explaining me in a very strong tone, which i was seriously afraid would degenerate into a RL fist-fight if i persisted, that you should not even look with me at the bug and investigate in erkelenz, right ? It was at that time that i decided that there will be no way i will continue to support yaird as long as you are the main maintainer, because you cannot be thrusthed to fix bugs in a timely fashion. And the info was not new, i had pointed this selfsame thing already in november, but nobody apart me chose to take action and look at the info, while it was your jobs as ramdisk-generator maintainers. Bug#383600: behaviour of update-initramfs -u has changed, only updates latest kernel initrd

Atm I have to specify each kernel separately vi -k to update them all. Why should one update _all_ initramfs images when beeing interested in only single one? Why should I be only interested in only a single one? If I install e.g. Because usualy it gets executed when you install a kernel-image package? Just grep for update-initramfs in /var/lib/dpkg/info/*.postinst. I get uswsusp, cryptsetup, mdadm and udev on my machine. They all simply call update-initramfs -u. This means that security updates of these packages are not automatically applied to all installed kernels which is a major security issue imho. If you insist that update-initramfs -u only updates the latest kernel, you should file bug reports against all packages using update-initramfs -u. or better yet, make the behaviour configurable, in a system wide debconf setting for example :) Friendly, Sven Luther -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. I think the kernel pseudo-package is mostly obsolete: it should be reserved for bugs affecting multiple kernels. This bug doesn't affect freebsd, hurd, etc. It does affect linux-2.4 and linux-2.2, but those are scheduled for removal before etch anyway. So actually, I'd like to suggest running through the bugs against 'kernel' and reassigning them to linux-2.6 or closing them as appropriate. Does that seem like a reasonable thing to do when I'm bored and not feeling up to programming, or would there be some complaint about it. snip anyway if you want to improve the legal situtation use: http://wiki.debian.org/KernelFirmwareLicensing dilinger succeeded in various firmware relicensing thanks to his quest to the vendors. feel free to pick up. Broadcom tg3 relicensing alone took over two years. This is a lovely thing to do, and I am *very very* impressed with dilinger's diligence and his success (I tried but failed to contact anyone at Broadcom). dgrs and qla2xxx are the only other drivers he had *any* success with, according to the wiki page. I am afraid we need a shorter-term solution. For each offending file, there are three possible solutions: 1. Get the author to release source code under a DFSG-free license 2. Move the firmware to non-free, patching the driver to use request_firmware() 3. Delete the driver and firmware entirely. 4. Move the whole friver to non-free, without major patching. 5. Reverse engineer the needed firmware, and create a trully free driver. AFAIK, the best outcome yet from the relicensing discussions on http://wiki.debian.org/KernelFirmwareLicensing is to properly permit the redistribution of the binary, without source code. Indeed, but even that was laughed at back then when we started at it, and you should have seen the reaction of LKML when i mentioned it there. Not to mention the reaction I originally got from the netdev maintainers, which was rather more hostile than being 'laughed at'. I think a lot of people genuinely believed that you could license an unsourced binary under the GPL I can't imagine *why* they believed that, though. snip That's fine for debian non-free, and a necessary step for making option (2) above work properly. Until and unless the entire Linux kernel is moved to non-free, such relicensing doesn't solve the fundamental bug. Indeed. I agree that option (3) is bad, but I still recommend it for the short term. It's the quickest path to a legal and For the short term, 4. is a better solution. Right. If a driver really can't build out-of-tree comfortably, (4) may not be feasible and (3) or (2) may be necessary, but let's cross that bridge if we come to it. What can I do to help with (4)? :-) SC-conforming Linux release, and it will bring people out of the closet to volunteer to work on (2). I think (2) is the actual goal, but maybe not one that can be finished before the proposed etch freeze -- especially since most of the blobs need to be relicensed before they can be made part of firmware-nonfree. Indeed, which is because we could also consider : 6. Pass another GR to allow debian/etch to release as is, provided we If the GR includes a commitment to include a statement regarding this violation of the SC in the *release notes*, then I would be satisfied with this from a freeness point of view: at least Debian would be advertising its failure to live up to the SC. If there is no such commitment, I would expect to see the same charade for etch+1. There's also a problem with Sven's analysis of option (6) relative to options (4) and (2). From a legal point of view, distributing the 'undistributable' (mislicensed) blobs in 'main' and distributing them in 'non-free' is equally bad. If it's OK to distribute them in the kernel package, it's OK to distribute them in 'firmware-nonfree'. It is up to the ftpmasters, the release team, and or the DPL to decide whether they are comfortable with it or not. If they are, then the blobs can be put in firmware-nonfree and (4) is perfectly straightforward. If they are not, then the blobs must be removed from the archive. (6) offers no advantage over (4) with regard to this. (This doesn't affect the non-free blobs which are properly licensed.) commit to a real effort to solve this for etch+1, or better yet, with some pro-active wording, which say we will make every effort to solve this issue, but don't provide timelines and schedules, as upstream will
Bug#383725: linux-image-2.6.16-2-686: cannot halt properly Thinkpad T22
Package: linux-image-2.6.16-2-686 Version: 2.6.16-17 Severity: normal Hello, I see a clear regression here after upgrading from 2.6.15 to 2.6.16. The kernel now doesn't shutdown cleanly the power on my laptop, a IBM Thinkpad T22. It used to work real nice on 2.6.15, but now, the machine just sits there after the Shutting down drives: sda (probably not the exact wording, i don't clearly remember, but it's usually the last thing on the console before the shutdown). I can safely poweroff the machine by pressing the power key for 5 seconds, but it's a bit annoying. Usually, i just suspend to disk this machine, using an ugly hack (echo disk /sys/power/state). This is also affect in that I need to poweroff the same way as a shutdown, ie. by pressing the power key. The machine resumes as normal. Bug#383249: usplash: add support for user input
I've attached a patch which adds user input support to usplash. This works by creating a second fifo /dev/.initramfs/usplash_outfifo and two new commands: INPUT and INPUTQUIET. Both INPUT and INPUTQUIET take a prompt as argument. The prompt is written to the usplash screen and then one line of user input is read to a buffer. If INPUTQUIET has been used, the user input is not echoed to screen (but '*'). usplash then waits for a reader to be ready on the outfifo or until the timeout time elapses. If a reader is available, the user input is written to the fifo from the buffer. In a initramfs script, something like this would be used: if [ -p /dev/.initramfs/usplash_outfifo ]; then usplash_write INPUTQUIET Enter password: PASS=$(cat /dev/.initramfs/usplash_outfifo) else echo -n Enter password: read PASS echo fi I have tried the patch locally with a slightly modified cryptsetup initramfs script and it seems to work. Bug#383730: initramfs-tools: incompatible with udev 0.097-1
Ditto - udev is calling getpwnam and getgrnam and is failing. I tried adding a hook script to copy my /etc/passwd and /etc/group files to $DESTROOT/etc, but that did no good. I tried adding /etc/ nsswitch.conf as well, but it didn't help either. I'm not sure what to try next. Also, not sure if this is related to udev starting up angrily, but kernel.hotplug no longer getting set properly. My firmware for my wireless driver (acx) won't load unless I do: echo /lib/udev/firmware.agent /proc/sys/kernel/hotplug (or use sysctl) That may be specific to the udev package. Running: initramfs-tools 0.75 udev 0.097-1. custom kernel pkg 2.6.17.7 cheers, nate -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Bug#383743: pointer doesn't work
Package: linux-image-2.6.17-2-686 Version: 2.6.17-6 Severity: important Upgrading to this kernel version on my HP nc6220 notebook left me with a completely non-working pointer in X. Tried various things, didn't really learn anything useful before getting frustrated and falling back to a prior kernel version, which works fine. Looked like there was no input from the mouse driver at all, though? Bdale -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]
