Bug#421443: linux-image-2.6.18-4-686: ide tape broken and ide scsi disabled, ide tapes unuseable

2007-04-29 Thread Anton Ivanov
Package: linux-image-2.6.18-4-686
Version: 2.6.18.dfsg.1-12
Severity: important

Kernel detects ide tape

ide-tape: hdb - ht0: Seagate STT2A rev 8A51
ide-tape: hdb - ht0: 1000KBps, 6*54kB buffer, 9720kB pipeline, 108ms tDSC, DMA

After which all userland utilities fail to access it or issue any
commands to it.

The drive mostly works using ide-tape in 2.6.14 and 2.6.16 on write (some
read problems). Works fine in 2.6.16 using ide-scsi read/write.

Frankly, anyone who has had to use ide-tapes knows that Linus can go get
lost with his statement about the IDE tape driver now being a perfect
replacement for ide-scsi (multiple times on lkm since 2003). It isn't.
In fact I have yet to see a kernel release where it works fine.

So disabling IDE-SCSI is not nice. That is the only means to use ide
tape drives at the moment.

old computer : kernel hang with Etch 2.6.18 fixed

2007-04-29 Thread Tobias Hain
Old computers with VBE 1.2 compliant graphics cards might not boot the new
Etch installer or distribution, which is based on a 2.6.18 kernel.

The machine will hang right before uncompressing the kernel. A laptop that
suffers from this is the first series of the Vobis Lebook (Mitac 5024)
laptop.

The reason is a particular patch introduced in kernels 2.6.17.14.

This post is just to document possible fixes:

a) Compile your own 2.6.18 Debian kernel. Just make to set this kernel
configuration:
CONFIG_FIRMWARE_EDID=N

b) In kernel = 2.6.21 a fix has been incorporated, which does not require
the above change in the .config

Hm, a tricky question since Malta supports many different CPUs.
4kc-malta would be the compatible denominator for the kernel
config given, i.e. we don't support the old legacy core cards
with MIPS IV CPUs, but any 4kc or newer CPU should work ok.

Bug#406111: fix i965 etch kernel support

2007-04-29 Thread Francesco Poli

latest debian-kernel repo added the fix, working right now here.
could you please testconfirm the latest available 2.6.18 snapshot
see etch apt line - http://wiki.debian.org/DebianKernel

I need linux-image-2.6.18-5-amd64_*_amd64.deb, but it seems that
http://kernel-archive.buildserver.net/debian-kernel
does not have such a build.
I don't have the time to build it myself, now.
Will the amd64 build be available on kernel-archive.buildserver.net in
the near future?

Moreover, I'm currently running Debian testing (lenny) and I'm waiting
for linux-image-2.6.20-1-amd64_*_amd64.deb to migrate from unstable to
testing.
According to
http://bjorn.haxx.se/debian/testing.pl?package=linux-2.6
this migration is currently blocked by the usual 10-day quarantine, by
RC bugs, and by the migration of glibc (which, in its turn, is too
young, has RC bugs, and is in freeze...).

I wonder if I could just install linux-image-2.6.20-1-amd64_*_amd64.deb
from sid:

  $ wget
http://ftp.it.debian.org/debian/pool/main/l/linux-2.6/linux-image-2.6.20-1-amd64_2.6.20-3_amd64.deb
  # dpkg -i linux-image-2.6.20-1-amd64_2.6.20-3_amd64.deb

Does a lenny box need glibc 2.5 to work properly with that kernel from
sid? By comparing dependencies, it seems that the kernel is installable
on a lenny box:
http://packages.debian.org/testing/admin/linux-image-2.6.18-4-amd64
http://packages.debian.org/unstable/admin/linux-image-2.6.20-1-amd64

What do you suggest?

Meta package for kernel install

2007-04-29 Thread Michel FACERIAS
Hi.

Just few words to ask a quetsion.

What is linux-image-2.6-k7 package ?

I think that it's just a meta pack to ease the install of the latest linux
2.6 kernel. If i'm right, i think that it could be a good idea to comment
this package as it ...

I took this example, but it could be the same for all µp specific deb files.

Thanks for all.
