Bug#425355: dpt_i2o - disk IO causes very high load

2007-05-21 Thread Peter Hirdina
Package: linux-image-2.6.18-4-k7
Version: 2.6.18.dfsg.1-12etch2

Doing any disk IO (> 10MB/s) causes the load on the system to rise into
extreme areas. This is bugging me, especially since the disks (4) are
on a separate RAID controller (Adaptec 2400A, module dpt_i2o).

For example: If I copy a big file via NFS onto the machine, the load
rises easily up to 8 (8 threads configured for nfsd). Copying the same
file via scp, the load gets still up to 5, so it doesn't look like it
is related to NFS. When I check with top what is causing this high
load, I can see that the system is spending all the time in iowaits.

I had this problem also with older kernels. I guess it was just not
that worse, because I just recently upgraded the NIC from 100MBit to
1GBit, causing extra stress for the disks.

Trying to debug things I found a something strange (at least for me).

PCI: Failed to allocate mem resource #6:[EMAIL PROTECTED] for :01:05.0
PCI: Bridge: :00:01.0
  IO window: disabled.
  MEM window: e800-e8ff

  PREFETCH window: disabled.
PCI: Bridge: :00:10.0
  IO window: 2000-2fff

  PREFETCH window: ea00-ebff

:01:05.0 -> graphics card (AGP, nVidia nv15)
:02:05.1 -> PCI bridge of the RAID controller
Why is the IO/MEM/PREFETCH window disabled?

Attached is also the full output of dmesg, lspci, /proc/interrupts,
/proc/iomem and /proc/ioports.

Could that be the reason for the high load?

cheers,
Peter

2007-05-21 Thread Hugo Vanwoerkom

Hi,

Thank you Debian Kernel Team for Sid's linux-source-2.6.21 (2.6.21-2)!
(On an i386 box with nvidia video cards)

I use the diff.gz file with kernel.org's patches to generate a kernel
tree and then follow section 4.2 Rebuilding an official Debian kernel
package of the Debian Linux Kernel Handbook.

I add 2 patches, the Debian Logo patch and 2.6.21-ck2 from:
http://members.optusnet.com.au/ckolivas/kernel/

Additionally I change some things in the config:
CONFIG_PARAVIRT off to be able to use nvidia
CONFIG_PRINTK_TIME on
CONFIG_LOGO on

Works like a charm! Thanks again.

Hugo

Bug#319755: Not necessarily initrd problem!

2007-05-21 Thread David Baron
I have had this for a while and do not use an initrd. I can rmmod genrtc and
modprobe rtc afterwards. However, certain thing have already loaded which
depend upon the rtc.ko and produce errors with genrtc.ko loaded.

I had a blacklist entry which had been successful in surpressing genrtc. I
would get an "error message" on bootup "Not load blacklisted module genrtc"
and then rtc would load correctly.

However, this workaround's file has been lost and I do not remember where I
had it. It was relating hotplug watchdogs though it is more relevant to alsa.

Bug#425462: NAT prerouting over tun interface broken

2007-05-21 Thread Frans Pop
Package: linux-2.6

My hercules s/390 emulator no longer receives packets sent from other
boxes to the external IP address it has on the host system. It appears
that iptables prerouting is broken somehow.

For details, see upstream BR.

Hi!

This seems to trigger ftbfs in many packages - and it is very well hidden.
Raising severity.

Any package depending on linux/version.h to detect a kernel version from
user space is almost certainly buggy. This should probably be closed as
not-a-bug and the affected packages fixed to not expect anything from
linux/version.h.

hmm.. let us keep this bug open a bit first.

libiw-people:

This fails with linux-libc-dev (but works fine with linux-kernel-headers):
$ cat iwtest.c
#include
int main()
{
struct wireless_info info;
info.b.freq = 1 ;
exit (0);
}

with:

this breaks compilations of packages using iwlib.h (like kdenetwork)

No, it is not that wrong for software like libiw which needs linux
headers from specific versions. It does not use it to detect the running
version but to find the version of the provided headers.
