Bug#441246: kernel: does not detect multiple cores in Core 2 Duo 6700

2007-10-11 Thread Jon Thackray
I've tried 2.6.22, and it behaves the same way as 2.6.21, ie /proc/cpuinfo
says number of cores is 1. Sorry for the delay, I had to wait for a long job
to complete.

SCSI discs, using an adaptec 29320 card. The distribution in use is
Lenny/Sid. /proc/cpuinfo indicates only one core, and evidence from
running multiple applications in parallel seems to confirm this.

2.6.22 from sid just installs fine on testing.
can you reproduce the bug with it?

There's no need for a resolution to decide that executable machine code
- whether or not you call it "firmware"[1] - is software. The relevant
GR is 2006-007, which decided against making a permanent exception for
"firmware" in the kernel.

[1] The term "firmware" should apply only to software that is installed
in non-volatile memory such as ROM or flash, which Debian does not need
to distribute. What we're talking about here is software for peripheral
processors.

Bug#419475: solved - udev was the problem

> 2.6.18.

I was able to track the problem down to udev. In my interfaces file I set a
different mac address for eth1.

Non-working /etc/udev/rules.d/z25_persistent-net.rules:

SUBSYSTEM=="net", DRIVERS=="?*", ATTRS{address}=="00:02:e3:10:83:bf",
NAME="eth0"

SUBSYSTEM=="net", DRIVERS=="?*", ATTRS{address}=="00:c0:9f:37:7b:ab",
NAME="eth1"

# PCI device 0x10b7:0x9055 (3c59x)
SUBSYSTEM=="net", DRIVERS=="?*", ATTRS{address}=="00:10:5a:61:9d:35",
NAME="eth3"

:bf is the mac address for eth0. :ab is the set mac address for
eth1. :35 is the actual mac address for eth1. This seems to work okay
in 2.6.8. I don't know how this file was originally created.

I emptied the file and rebooted into 2.6.18. It was rewritten as:

# PCI device 0x10ec:0x8139 (8139too)
SUBSYSTEM=="net", DRIVERS=="?*", ATTRS{address}=="00:02:e3:10:83:bf",
NAME="eth0"

# PCI device 0x10b7:0x9055 (3c59x)
SUBSYSTEM=="net", DRIVERS=="?*", ATTRS{address}=="00:10:5a:61:9d:35",
NAME="eth3"

I changed eth3 to eth1 and rebooted and everything came up working. It turned
out that it was the 3Com card not RealTek that wasn't coming up, so posting
to this bug wasn't the appropriate place. Sorry for that. In any case, I
have things working now.

 * cdebconf has received a lot of code refactoring, plugin system had

 * cdebconf-entropy has been updated to use the new plugin system;
 * mklibs has fixed our building errors due a lack of symbols;

= Resolved breakage in daily builds =

FWIW, today I also saw OOM killer in (broken?) action. Imho, OOM killer
should only trigger if there's at least either no more RAM to work
with, and note this in the syslog, or when swap is exhausted.

My kern.log has this, with the time stamp and hostname removed:

DMA: 465*4kB 17*8kB 1*16kB 1*32kB 1*64kB 0*128kB 1*256kB 1*512kB 1*1024kB
1*2048kB 0*4096kB = 5948kB
DMA32: empty
Normal: empty
HighMem: empty
Swap cache: add 2195725, delete 2046650, find 782418/975703, race 1+47
Free swap  = 2489952kB
Total swap = 4194296kB
Free swap:   2489952kB
483649 pages of RAM
14999 reserved pages
70 pages shared
149071 pages swap cached

Unfortunately, I can't make too much out of these numbers.

Best,
