Bug#480637: linux-image-amd64 - waiting for root filesystem

2008-05-11 Thread Angelo Puglisi
Package: linux-image-amd64
Version: 2.6.24+13

All testing kernels do not start in my notebook. With a little investigation
I found out that initrd is very little compared to etch one:

-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 7068594 10 mag 23:16 initrd.img-2.6.18-6-amd64
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 1344638 10 mag 22:30 initrd.img-2.6.24-1-amd64

I tried using both yaird 0.0.12-25 and initramfs-tools 0.92a and the result
is similar.

I attached diff between initramfs of etch kernel and lenny kernel.

Bug#479652: linux-image-2.6.24-1-686: xorg problem with 2.6.24/25

No.

Even worse - my investigations caused temporary monitor failure :(
Cooling about 10 minutes turned it to an operational state.

I see that my problem is probably in the framebuffer code.

Facts that I found:

1) I managed to start X with kernel 2.6.25 adding vga=9 parameter.

2) With FB & default (almost empty) config X switches off my monitor
(probably a symptom of to high frequency)

   - ctr-alt-bakspace properly terminates X
   - ctr-alt-{+,-} give no visible effects
   - ctr-alt-Fn isn't able to switch to VT
 I'm sure: a sequence ctr-alt-F1 ctr-alt-bakspace terminates X

   - the monitor failure was provoked with this procedure
 - on tty1 I wrote: sleep 10; DISPLAY=:0 xvidtune -show
 - on tty2: X

Then monitor had switch off (power-on LED green->yellow) as expected :(
and after some delay I saw (LED was still yellow) a violet color on
 screen.

System was locked. After reset monitor had a temporary failure.

3) With FB and my config (I've appended it at the end) all modes that I've
tried have a wrong (to low) frequency, for expample
   - declared 75 Hz, xvidtune displays 75
   - ctrl-panel on monitor (and an visual apperance) gives 49 Hz
   - switching VT's works

4) At boot time FB causes >30 seconds delay at ide1 probe:

I just tried (on arm) and it works for me. CCing debian-arm. Anyone
else seeing problems with 2.6.25?

Bug#480707: linux-image-2.6.25-1-686: 2.6.25-1 does not give me any battery info

2008-05-11 Thread Marcos Daniel Marado Torres
Package: linux-image-2.6.25-1-686
Version: 2.6.25-1
Severity: important

Hi there,

In this laptop I have consecutive kernels working without problem, but
with the latest linux-image-2.6.25-1-686 KDE's laptop monitoring
service (that looks into the battery status) refuses to start up. I
guess that ACPI info is missing, but I didn't really check anything that
could be causing this, just came back to 2.6.24. Yet, feel free to ask
me anything if you need, and I'll check it out.

Best regards,
Marcos Marado

No luck, same error. I did rmmoded vboxdrv after installing the .deb generated
by m-a, and modprobed the new one.

Nothing, I'm afraid; all 2.6.24. There was no disk activity when I
restarted after installing 2.6.25.

Judging by /usr/share/doc/nslu2-utils/README.Debian it didn't even get
as far as starting the initramfs.

Bug#479721: FTBFS with 2.6.25-1

2008-05-11 Thread Ben Hutchings
Upstream commit e80c1ff7cfb63e247a4479c4a20f65d373d99b62 should fix
this:

http://sources.redhat.com/git/?p=cluster.git;a=commitdiff;h=e80c1ff7cfb63e247a4479c4a20f65d373d99b62

(This doesn't make the sysfs code do the right thing, as it will free a
superblock on unmount even if an open sysfs file still refers to it.
That's not a regression though.)

Ben.

As reported against Ubuntu in
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/195221,
on the Asus Eee PC, "the disk is reported as UDMA66 capable,
but is installed as UDMA33 because the system does not detect
a 80 pin conductor."

And indeed, when I check dmesg on Debian I see:

ata1: SATA max UDMA/133 cmd 0x1f0 ctl 0x3f6 bmdma 0xffa0 irq 14
ata2: PATA max UDMA/100 cmd 0x170 ctl 0x376 bmdma 0xffa8 irq 15
ata2.00: ATA-4: SILICONMOTION SM223AC, , max UDMA/66
ata2.00: 7815024 sectors, multi 0: LBA
ata2.00: limited to UDMA/33 due to 40-wire cable
ata2.00: configured for UDMA/33

This has been patched in the kernel upstream, as reported in
the Ubuntu bug cited above:

http://git.kernel.org/?p=linux/kernel/git/torvalds/linux-2.6.git;a=commitdiff;h=01ce2601e4ba354fe1e25bb940817570d0c8ed4f;hp=a6116c9e60978a6deaa20691c67ffed727e50df1

Would you please apply this one-line patch to Debian's
current kernel?

Thanks,
Ben

how about if you'd report the failure of it?!

just looks fine and pretty sure that this initramfs contrare to your
report is *not* 1mb big.

Bug#480739: virtualbox-ose-modules-2.6.24-1-686: Fails with a symbol error

2008-05-11 Thread Michael Welsh Duggan
Downgrading to libxalan110 1.10-3.2 seems to fix this problem.

apt-get install libxalan110=1.10-3.2

It is possible that this bug should be reassigned to libxalan110.

Fixing linux-modules-extra-2.6

2008-05-11 Thread Ben Hutchings
Daniel,

I had a look at the various build failures for linux-modules-extra-2.6,
filed bugs on those module-source packages that didn't have them, and
have suggested fixes for some. I then made the module-source bugs block
#478314 as appropriate.

sourceftbfs on? bug fixed

atl2 mips, s390 453016 no (can be disabled)
aufs -
btrfs -
drbd8 mips, mipsel453077 no (disabled)
et131xs390480733 no (patch)
gspca -
iscsitarget alpha, hppa, mips, mipsel 480734 no (patch)
kqemu -
loop-aes -
lzma -
r6040 amd64 475705 no (patch)
redhat-clusterall 479721 no (fixed-upstream)
squashfs m68k431409 no (not release arch)
sfc arm, armel, powerpc, sparc 475467 yes
tp-smapi -
unionfs -
virtualbox-ose-
virtualbox-ose-guest all 478333 no (patch)

Unfortunately I haven't yet been able to test my suggested fixes for
arch-dependent failures, and I don't know how we might disable some
modules on some configurations (suggested for atl2).

Also we don't know that there won't be other build failures once these
are fixed. :-(

Ben.

Bug#480763: linux-2.6: disable CONFIG_PRISM54

2008-05-11 Thread Sam Morris
Package: linux-2.6
Version: 2.6.25-1
Severity: normal

CONFIG_PRISM54 was disabled in 2.6.24 but it's back again in 2.6.25. It
should be disabled because the new mac80211-based P54 driver replaces
it.

This causes problems for me because my wlan card is matched by both
p54pci and prism54's modaliases; this makes udev loads the wrong one,
so I have to blacklist prism54 by hand.
