Bug#469693: Turned out to be a topology problem

Sorry, it would be too expensive to make a high quality upstream report. I
suggest to close the current bug, 2.6.26 is outdated anyhow and there is a
work-around. The only real and relevant message behind the problem is just:
For some possibly broken USB hardware Win (2003) possibly does better error
recovery.

Thanks, Jürgen

Bug#505545: [linux-image-2.6.26-1-xen-amd64] linux-image-2.6.26-1-xen-amd64 floppy mount problem

The version in question does not use kernel-package to build i386
packages. No idea what you do.

Mark, does the problem still exist for you with the current Lenny packages?

Given that it took until six months after I'd left the job where I
encountered the bug for the patch to get looked at you may as well close
it - I don't really have the combination of time and enthusiam required
to do so myself.

Upgrade, -10 is current.

incorrect scaling_max_freq is set by acpi-cpufreq and cannot be changed with
 cpufreq-set -u or
 echo 160/sys/devices/system/cpu/cpuX/cpufreq/scaling_max_freq
scaling_max_freq can be changed to 800MHz
doesn't matter which governor is active

Check if your BIOS is uptodate. This values are often modified by ACPI
themself. My notebook for example changes them if it gets too hot.

Bug#505579: kernel's loading taking 2 or 3 minutes

2008-11-13 Thread Xavier Brochard
Package: linux-image-2.6.26-1-amd64
Version: 2.6.26-9
Severity: normal

I've had problems booting with Lilo: kernel's loading take 2 or 3 minutes (may
be even more).

The whole system is on LVM, using Debian Sid..
It's a brand new install on a Dell Latitude 131L laptop, using a new hard
drive (after a crash of the previous HD). This new hard drive is of the same
model as the previous one, except the size which is double.

Previously the laptop was running (fine) Debian Sid but without LVM.

I'm not able to give more details because currently the system is unbootable
after an upgrade to version 2.6.26-10. See bugs not yet reported with
subjects:
1. Unbootable after kernel upgrade: Lilo can't load kernel
2. Kernel unable to mount file system and to execute init

Bug#505609: Unbootable after kernel upgrade: Lilo can't load kernel

2008-11-13 Thread Xavier Brochard
Package: linux-image-2.6.26-1-amd64
Version: 2.6.26-10
Severity: critical

I've did an upgrade on 2008-11-09, on a new installed system, upgrading kernel
2.6.26-09 to 2.6.26.10. Apt was also upgraded.
I've seen nothing strange during upgrade and in the apt and dpkg logs. The
system is entirely on LVM partitions.

When reboting I obtain this message from Lilo:
Loading LinuxEBDA is big; kernel setup stack overlaps LILO second stage.

2.6.26-1-686 from lenny boots my DELL SC400 with 6.62 firmware on the
 megaraid card.

The boot was quite slow, but I'm comparing to a bespoke kernel without
initrd, so that is not surprising.

I have hacked on the box in the past to include additional megaraid
drivers in the initrd config, so I can't say it a completely clean
test, but I'd regard this as a fix (Stock 2.6.25 no boot, stock 2.6.26
boots). I will attempt a reinstall soon.

Have you tested a reinstall already?

No. I hope to do it next week as I have a week off from being a system
admin next week ?!

Bug#505613: Kernel unable to mount file system and to execute init

2008-11-13 Thread Xavier Brochard
Package: linux-image-2.6.26-1-amd64
Version: 2.6.26-9
Severity: critical

I've downgraded my kernel from 2.6.26-10 to 2.6.26-9 after the system became
unbootable (see bug report #505609). Now the system boot, but stop before
mounting the file system and executing init. See below for the output.

The system is entirely on LVM. Partitions comes from the same Volume Group:
/ (root file system)
/tmp
/usr
/var
/home
/usr/local
swap
/media/empty

While the system was unbootable (see bug report #505609), I've used the rescue
mode of the Debian installer CD-ROM to boot, to mount the root and the /var
partitions (and also /proc et /sys) and reinstall the package linux-
image-2.6.26-1-amd64-2.6.26-9.deb (which was still on the hard drive). There
was no errors in the output.
I've rebooted, Lilo launch the new kernel, as slow as before (see my bug
report 505579), the kernel boot and failed to mount filesystem and execute
init. Here's the output:

Then I got a shell in the initrd image.

cat /proc/cmdline:

I've rebooted the system using Debian installer, and tried to:

run lilo
but nothing change after that.

Booting Debian in 14 seconds

2008-11-13 Thread Phil Endecott

Dear Debian Kernel people,

I'm writing to let you know about an article that I've written for
Debian Administration about improving boot time:

http://www.debian-administration.org/articles/620

I have been thinking about how a general-purpose distribution like
Debian can get some of the benefits which, at first sight, may seem
possible only in locked down systems.

If you have any feedback you're welcome to use the article's comments
section, or to follow up on this list, or to email me directly.

Regards, Phil.

Hi, compared to kernel 2.6.22 it got better, now I can enable my
motherboard's USB card reader and still write this bug-report. In
2.6.22 USB became unuable after about 30s, now it takes longer.

Of course it depends on hardware: this system has ATI SB600 and
690G chips, motherboard/barebone is ASUS Pundit. Also ...

The problem is related to heavy USB load. Example: when I write
GBytes of data to a USB disk (or Flash card or USB stick) the
kernel logs a message like low speed usb device reset or so.
After this time it has forgotten mouse and keyboard. It does not
help to reconnect the USB cable.

Again: with kernel 2.6.22 it was not possible (under my hardware)
to enable the card reader or the write GBytes to an USB stick.
With the new kernel it often takes 30 min or so to cause the
problem. The system used here was even booted from an SD card,
but KDE for example cannot be used, the mouse/kdb would get lost.

I have problems connecting to my home network with the 2.6.25 kernel, to
which I can connect flawlessly with the 2.6.24 kernel. On my system, it
does bind to the network, but the following dhcp request fails due to a
 time-out.
Connecting under the 2.6.25 kernel on my work network (which does not
support the N-mode wifi) does work fine.
I really have no idea about what kind of additional information I should
send. In /var/log/syslog nothing more than the dhcp-time-outs appears.
Please give me some clues on what to send, so that I can help sorting
 out the problem.
 Thanks in advance!

There have been plenty of lwlwifi fixes in 2.6.26. Does updating to
the current Lenny kernels fix the problem for you?

Cheers,

A bug which affects all parisc kernels since 2.6.18-rc2 affects the
 debian parisc kernel as well.

Under some random circumstances, SCSI devices (such as the root disk)
will get offlined, rendering the box totally unuseable:

 While I didn't have any problem with linux-image-2.6.25-2-powerpc 2.6.25-3
(at the same time, udev was installed due to dependencies, because I had
to replace the buggy yaird by initramfs-tools) just after installing it

anything in the config of the machine. However /dev/mixer disappeared for
 an unknown reason (see below).

Yes, in the kernel. It's typical of bugs which crash it.

While reading the documentation from udev I have nothing found, HOW to
 blacklist the modules
Maybe because it is a function of module-init-tools.

You could try using the rescue mode [1] of the Etch Beta 2 release [2]
of Debian Installer to correct your /etc/fstab.

I'm not too keen on constantly swapping two incompatible versions of
/etc/fstab. And since I expect it'll take some time before all drivers
which are working in 2.4.27 also do in 2.6 that would be necessary for
 too long to be practical.
