Bug#515255: linux-image-2.6.18-6-xen-vserver-686: No grub entry's after install of kernel, and when I add it by hand the kernel can't start
Package: linux-image-2.6.18-6-xen-vserver-686 Version: 2.6.18.dfsg.1-24 Severity: important This is a very big problem for my anyway, I have to use both Xen and Vserver, and the kernel can provide my both, but when I install it, (both amd64 and 686 kernel) it says “Changing /boot/grub/menu.lst” but there is nothing changed in menu.lst so I can't start the kernel, then I entered it by hand (see my menu.lst below) and rebooted and tried to start the new kernel, but then it boots and stops with “waiting for root filesystem... ...” and then never continues *** My menu.lst *** ## ## End Default Options ## title Debian GNU/Linux, kernel 2.6.18-6-686 root(hd2,0) kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.18-6-686 root=/dev/md1 ro initrd /boot/initrd.img-2.6.18-6-686 savedefault title Debian GNU/Linux, kernel 2.6.18-6-xen-vserver-686 root(hd2,0) kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.18-6-xen-vserver-686 root=/dev/md1 ro initrd /boot/initrd.img-2.6.18-6-xen-vserver-686 savedefault title Debian GNU/Linux, kernel 2.6.18-6-vserver-686 root(hd2,0) kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.18-6-vserver-686 root=/dev/md1 ro initrd /boot/initrd.img-2.6.18-6-vserver-686 savedefault *** ls -a of /boot *** config-2.6.18-6-486 config-2.6.18-6-686 config-2.6.18-6-vserver-686 config-2.6.18-6-xen-vserver-686 grub initrd.img-2.6.18-6-486 initrd.img-2.6.18-6-486.bak initrd.img-2.6.18-6-686 initrd.img-2.6.18-6-vserver-686 initrd.img-2.6.18-6-xen-vserver-686 initrd.img-2.6.18-6-xen-vserver-686.bak System.map-2.6.18-6-486 System.map-2.6.18-6-686 System.map-2.6.18-6-vserver-686 System.map-2.6.18-6-xen-vserver-686 vmlinuz-2.6.18-6-486 vmlinuz-2.6.18-6-686 vmlinuz-2.6.18-6-vserver-686 vmlinuz-2.6.18-6-xen-vserver-686 -- System Information: Debian Release: 4.0 APT prefers stable APT policy: (500, 'stable') Architecture: i386 (i686) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/bash Kernel: Linux 2.6.18-6-686 Locale: LANG=da_DK.UTF-8, LC_CTYPE=da_DK.UTF-8 (charmap=UTF-8) Versions of packages linux-image-2.6.18-6-xen-vserver-686 depends on: ii initramfs-tools 0.85itools for generating an initramfs ii linux-modules-2.6.18-6- 2.6.18.dfsg.1-24 Linux 2.6.18 modules on i686 Versions of packages linux-image-2.6.18-6-xen-vserver-686 recommends: pn libc6-xen (no description available) -- no debconf information -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-kernel-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of "unsubscribe". Bug#515261: linux-image-xen-686: missing dependancy to xen-linux-system-2.6.26-1-xen-686
Package: linux-image-xen-686 Severity: critical Justification: breaks the whole system When doing a full-upgrade from etch to lenny on a system running xen the xen hypervisor is not updated accordingly. A dependancy to xen-linux-system-2.6.26-1-xen-686 is missing which means that grub is configured to use the xen hypervisor from etch to run the 2.6.26-xen kernel. Result is an unbootable system. Adding xen-linux-system-2.6.26-1-xen-686 will solve the issue since this correctly instructs grub to use the new xen hyperviser from lenny. -- System Information: Debian Release: 5.0 APT prefers stable APT policy: (500, 'stable') Architecture: i386 (i686) Kernel: Linux 2.6.26-1-686 (SMP w/1 CPU core) Locale: LANG=en_DK.UTF-8, LC_CTYPE=en_DK.UTF-8 (charmap=UTF-8) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/bash -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-kernel-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of "unsubscribe". Without going into details (since I do not have the time to check again how it works), AFAIK uswsusp (which ships s2disk) does not unload/reload any module by default. This shoul mean that if you do not require any new module, the fact that the kernel has been upgraded should not cause any problem. Thx, bye, Gismo / Luca pgpCbSijNLTM2.pgp Description: PGP signature

When I boot the system I end up in busybox with no disk partitions mounted. When I try to mount my root partition on a mount point, I get "cramfs wrong magic." Under 2.4 my root is a vanilla partition. I've edited fstab and lilo.conf in ways I think are appropriate, but the environment in which initramfs runs is significantly different from that in which the ramdisk will execute. The change from devfs to udev is another example of this. I don't know what's going on, or even the extent to which this is an initramfs-tools issue. I have a setup where I have evms+lvm2, and an evms-volume "root-crypted" is a luks volume of the root file system. This is what happens (typed, not captured from serial console or something, so any typos are mine): Begin: Mounting root file system ... Begin: Running /scripts/local-top ... device-mapper: ioctl: 4.7.0-ioctl (2006-06-24) initialised: dm-de...@redhat.com Volume group "root" not found Done. Begin: Waiting for root file system... I don't know what causes the message about vg "root" to not be found. I have no such vg, although it might be that I have have once had such. Once I get dropped to busybox shell, inspecting /dev reveals there is no /dev/evms directory. Running evms_activate from the shell correctly creates the directory and the nodes/mappings there, but after that fails with libgcc_s.so.1 must be installed for pthread_cancel to work Aborted However the nodes and mappings apparently have been correctly created before that. After that, I run "cryptsetup luksOpen /dev/evms/root-crypted root-decrypted" and enter my root filesystem password. /dev/mapper/root-decrypted is created. Then typing "exit" allows the boot process to continue and finish successfully. All the required block devices are correctly detected in the boot process (I have hda, hdd, sda. Of these all are detected, but only sda should be needed for booting after grub; the initramfs and kernel are on a partition on hda). Here's how my evms/lvm2 is setup (the volume1-root in the output below is my old root, not the current one; the current one is root-decrypted): # dmsetup --tree ls hda4 (254:3) `- (3:0) volume1-root (254:19) `-hdd3 (254:7) `- (22:64) hda3 (254:2) `- (3:0) my_container-test--region (254:22) `-sda6 (254:10) `- (8:0) hda2 (254:1) `- (3:0) my_container-my_region (254:20) `-sda5 (254:9) `- (8:0) hdd4 (254:6) `- (22:64) lvm2|volume1|root (254:8) `-hdd3 (254:7) `- (22:64) hda1 (254:0) `- (3:0) hdd2 (254:5) `- (22:64) swap-crypted (254:15) `-lvm2|my_container|swap1 (254:14) `-sda6 (254:10) `- (8:0) hdd1 (254:4) `- (22:64) test-volume (254:17) `-lvm2|my_container|test-region (254:16) `-sda6 (254:10) `- (8:0) sda1 (254:13) `- (8:0) my_container-swap1 (254:21) `-sda6 (254:10) `- (8:0) root-decrypted (254:18) `-root-crypted (254:12) `-lvm2|my_container|my_region (254:11) `-sda5 (254:9) `- (8:0) Additionally there's something wrong with the busybox shell: ctrl-c and ctrl-z do not work in it, so if I issue e.g. the commad "cat" in the shell, I'm stuck forever. The kernel I'm running is the Debian-provided linux-image-2.6.18-4-amd64 2.6.18.dfsg.1-10. You can get the generated initramfs from http://users.tkk.fi/~sliedes/my-initramfs . Bug#515533: linux-2.6.26: tulip module handles dmfe cards (again)
Package: linux-image-2.6-486 Version: 2.6.26+17 Severity: important After upgrading to linux-2.6.26 from 2.6.18, one of my two network cards stopped working. Closer examination showed lots of "tulip_stop_rxtx() failed (CSR5 0xfc74 CSR6 0x2042202)" messages. It seems that bug #405203 resurfaced again, but I was unable to add a reply there since it's archived already. The workaround described there (rmmod tulip; rmmod dmfe; modprobe dmfe) works for me. A quick diff of the two kernel versions' modules.pcimap files shows that both dmfe and tulip claim responsibility for the same devices (again): $ diff -y 2.6.18-6-486/modules.pcimap 2.6.26-1-486/modules.pcimap | grep 1282 dmfe 0x1282 0x9132 0x 0xf dmfe 0x1282 0x9132 0x 0xf dmfe 0x1282 0x9102 0x 0xf dmfe 0x1282 0x9102 0x 0xf dmfe 0x1282 0x9100 0x 0xf dmfe 0x1282 0x9100 0x 0xf dmfe 0x1282 0x9009 0x 0xf dmfe 0x1282 0x9009 0x 0xf > tulip 0x1282 0x9100 0x 0xf > tulip 0x1282 0x9102 0x 0xf -- System Information: Debian Release: 5.0 APT prefers stable APT policy: (500, 'stable') Architecture: i386 (i686) Kernel: Linux 2.6.26-1-486 Locale: LANG=en_US, LC_CTYPE=en_US (charmap=ISO-8859-1) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/bash Versions of packages linux-image-2.6-486 depends on: ii linux-image-2.6.26-1-486 2.6.26-13 Linux 2.6.26 image on x86 linux-image-2.6-486 recommends no packages. linux-image-2.6-486 suggests no packages. -- no debconf information -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-kernel-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of "unsubscribe". Bug#515533: linux-2.6.26: tulip module handles dmfe cards (again)
A patch that would probably have fixed this issue on x86 systems seems to have been deferred because the current behaviour seemed to be necessary for sparc64. At least if I interpret these mails correctly: http://lkml.org/lkml/2008/4/4/86 http://lkml.org/lkml/2008/4/4/292 signature.asc Description: This is a digitally signed message part.
