Bug#477233: linux-image-2.6.26-1-amd64: Got *my* problem solved meanwhile
Package: linux-image-2.6.26-1-amd64 Followup-For: Bug #477233 Meanwhile I got the problem fixed on my machine. I still don't understand why, because the final steps to solve it are the same I tried out already before filing my other response, but then without solving it. The problem on my machine occured after an upgrade from Etch to Lenny, so after changing the kernel from 2.6.18-6-amd64 to 2.6.26-1-amd64. The impact was, that even with all the good looking stuff in /proc/asound I couldn't hear anything from the speakers. Today I tried again, running alsaconf in a terminal window. First all other sound apps were killed, then alsaconf detected an ICH6 sound card and configured it. At the end of the configuration I heard at least a "click" from the speakers. Executing "playsound" with a Wave file (e.g. from gnome-audio packet) then played the sound. Restarting KDEs sound system then also was able to play the KDE sounds and finally this also survives a complete reboot cycle. So I guess my problem is solved, but since I already tried out alsaconfig once without luck I'm still wondering what was different this time. Thanks for your attention. Bug#515956: linux-image-2.6.26-1-alpha-generic: 2.6.26-1-alpha-generic fails to boot on DS10 (Tsunami)
Package: linux-image-2.6.26-1-alpha-generic Version: 2.6.26-13 Severity: normal Hi, Right after the release of Lenny, I upgraded my Compaq AlphaServer DS1Â0 which was previous running Etch. Everything went rather smoothly, until I tried to reboot the system: the new kernel fails to load. aboot stops at "loading compressed vmlinuz", and then nothing happens. The previous Etch kernel (2.6.18) still boots just fine. I'm not quite sure how to debug this, is there any specific info to provide? Bug#515982: linux-image-2.6-486: Cannot boot on i486
Package: linux-image-2.6-486 Version: 2.6.26+17 Severity: Grave Justification: Makes package unusable Installing lenny on a 486 is not possible, because the installer kernel cannot boot. Upgrading from Etch will work, but only if the old kernel continues to be used. When trying to boot the kernel, it seems to panic immediately (I can't really check, because my hercules monitor doesn't allow scrollback). I copied the crash message (by hand, so it may contain some typos, and I left some numbers out; please ask if they are important, it's easy to reproduce, if you have the hardware). Below is the text that's on screen after trying to boot. I also included the output of /proc/cpuinfo (when using Etch's 2.6.18 kernel). The cache is switched off to make sure that wasn't the problem; the result is identical if I do switch it on. This source closely tracks official Linux kernel releases. Debian's modifications to that source consist of security fixes, bug fixes, and features that have already been (or we believe will be) accepted by the upstream maintainers. . In bash, there is support for checking more than just the final pipe command's exit code via the "pipefail" option. Attached patch adds this behavior, and make sure the script uses bash (to avoid future dash/bash migration issues). Current behavior: $ find /fail | cpio --quiet --dereference -o -H newc | gzip > /tmp/archive.gz find: `/fail': No such file or directory $ echo $? 0 Desired behavior: $ set -o pipefail $ find /fail | cpio --quiet --dereference -o -H newc | gzip > /tmp/archive.gz find: `/fail': No such file or directory $ echo $? 1 Also, I would recommend adding "-e" to the shell to catch single-command failures during execution, though that's out of scope for this particular bug. Bug#488804: marked as done (merge messages into dmesg by default for exact playback of booting console)

Perhaps merge them into dmesg, so one can see a playback exactly like what was on the console, before they flew off before anyone can figure them out, and too far for Shift PageUp to find. Please make capturing the default, and disabling an option for expert users. Yes, the initramfs-tools man pages mentions some logging options, but all basic users know is they can see most of what went by so fast by looking in /var/log/, except for a few lines that turn out to be initramfs-tools message, and they wish they were also in /var/log/ by default, without needing to adjust any fancy tools... Another problem is identifying who is doing the talking. Apparently lines with the fractional seconds prefixes are the kernel. Lines without are the boot scripts... and also initramfs-tools... All very clear for power users, but not for non-power users. --- End Message --- --- Begin Message --- Source: initramfs-tools Source-Version: 0.93 We believe that the bug you reported is fixed in the latest version of initramfs-tools, which is due to be installed in the Debian FTP archive: initramfs-tools_0.93.dsc to pool/main/i/initramfs-tools/initramfs-tools_0.93.dsc initramfs-tools_0.93.tar.gz to pool/main/i/initramfs-tools/initramfs-tools_0.93.tar.gz initramfs-tools_0.93_all.deb to pool/main/i/initramfs-tools/initramfs-tools_0.93_all.deb A summary of the changes between this version and the previous one is attached. The problem seems to be that it itself contains such a code sequence! The bytes 8d b4 26 00 00 00 00 match GENERIC_NOP7 and the instruction pointer in this crash points into the middle of those, which suggests that they've just been changed. Running with a serial consoled logged to another system, I was able to catch the error messages. They arn't completely consistant, so I'm including them all below. (A couple of weeks worth on my sparc pbuilder system.) Speculation: there has been a report that heavy disk I/O causes this problem. Since many of the messages have truncated kernel fault messages, I guess that the system buffers a kernel fault message, then tries to dump core causing a fault in the fault handler. (I think that's what a RED state exception is.) Adding a delay or turning off the kernel core dump may allow the full error message to be displayed. The doubled characters may be due to both processors printing the same message at the same time. initramfs-tools 0.93 status report
initramfs-tools git repo: git clone git://git.debian.org/kernel/initramfs-tools.git initramfs-tools is an hookable initramfs generator. It can boot on NFS, LVM2, md, LUKS, dmraid, oldstyle devices, .. The generated initramfs is generic, but can explicitly be tuned for small. It is actively deployed in Debian and Ubuntu. It is written in POSIX shell. It has an "end-user" friendly invocation with update-initramfs and the low level mkinitramfs. klibc is used for minimal initramfs. The initramfs comes together with a rescue shell. It is possible to ssh into it. run-init nukes initramfs, remounts /root, chroots, spawns init. It may currently be distro specific as many Debian packages ship hooks for it (udev, mdadm, cryptsetup, lvm2, ..). But it should be quite easy to make it non distro specific and fix debianism (add a rpm spec, ..). initramfs-tools is badly hit on the linux-2.6 side by races due to SCSI_WAIT_SCAN being implemented only in some scsi drivers and not at all on usb and scsi side. willy had this patch to fix it: http://www.parisc-linux.org/~willy/libata-async-2.diff 0.93 features: - OLPC support - hid_* modules addition - fixes for MODULES=dep high minor partitions and Xen virtual block dev - make deb-pkg linux-2.6 target support - find, cpio exit codes no longer ignored - fixes for LABEL strings with '/' - misc cleanups - doc fixes TODO: - monolithical linux support - MODULES=dep special case raid on top of lvm - mawk support?? - loopback fs support (ubuntu merge) - mount failure hooks (ubuntu merge) - fix bugs http://bugs.debian.org/src:initramfs-tools thanks for hacking on it, sending in patches advices or whatever. -- maks -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-kernel-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of "unsubscribe". Hello Steve, the network driver is "depca" the SCSI is aha1740. I have tried to compile a new kernel with CONFIG_ALPHA_JENSEN=y (on a running 5.0) but the compile process failed with: CC arch/alpha/kernel/module.o CC arch/alpha/kernel/srmcons.o CC arch/alpha/kernel/sys_jensen.o CC arch/alpha/kernel/pci-noop.o arch/alpha/kernel/pci-noop.c:113: error: redefinition of âpci_alloc_consistentâ include/asm/pci.h:83: error: previous definition of âpci_alloc_consistentâ was here make[2]: *** [arch/alpha/kernel/pci-noop.o] Error 1 make[1]: *** [arch/alpha/kernel] Error 2 make[1]: Leaving directory `/usr/src/linux-source-2.6.26' make: *** [debian/stamp/build/kernel] Error 2 I have applied two small patches to the kernel source according to http://patchwork.kernel.org/patch/4088/ Just waiting the compile to finish. (It has passed pci-noop.c already). Included direct support for aha1740 and depca (not modules). I will try to update the kernel on the install cd and will inform you if it is working with the newly compiled kernel. Bug#515125: general: cpu frequency scalling crashes my system
On Fri, Feb 13, 2009 at 08:13:45PM +0100, Mark Poks wrote: > i am not sure what exacly causes the problem. it maight be cpufreq, or kernel > or maybe something else (or CPU Frequency Scalling Monitor applet in GNOME > which is rather in doubt). > > when enabled "AMD Quiet'n'cool" in BIOS (the CPU frequency scalling) and have > installed CPUFreq package, it very often happens that system crashes totally. Hi Mark, I had similar problems with my AMD64 system. Whenever frequency scaling was enabled the machine would crash within a few hours of operation, even when it was idle. The kernel would oops a few times before finally locking up. I also saw video and database corruption, but generally the system was stable. The problem was a BIOS bug. It started when I increased my system RAM to 4 DIMMs. The CPU (AMD64 939 pin x2 4800) can't handle 4 DIMMs at the full speed of 400MHz; the BIOS is supposed to automatically slow the RAM down to 333MHz in this case, but that didn't work on my Gigabyte K8NS Ultra 939. I slowed the RAM down manually and the system is now perfectly stable. Maybe something like this is happening to you too. Memory tests did not show any fault by the way. RFC: Firmware removal

I talked back and forth with them and they seemed to be happy to fix the license text but I never got a final statement of what exactly it would be. I think we should move ahead with removal of sourceless firmware, but include everything we have clear permission to distribute in the non-free section. This would exclude the 3 blobs mentioned above and several others that are already stripped from Debian kernels. I propose that future versions of firmware-nonfree, or a second firmware "source" package, should be based on the firmware directory of Linux releases, using a script to exclude the files with unclear license status. The contents of the firmware directory should be excluded from the linux-2.6 package except where source is available. Of the 13 sourceless firmware blobs I was aware of in the lenny kernel, several have subsequently been moved to the firmware directory: - 2.6.27: dabusb, dsp56k (with source), kaweth, whiteheat - 2.6.28: cassini - 2.6.29: e100, starfire - linux-next: qla1280 The remaining firmware - found in mga, r128, radeon, tehuti, typhoon - is at least clearly redistributable. Before I spend (and possibly waste) time in preparing packages, I'd like to get people's opinions on this proposal. Ben. signature.asc Description: This is a digitally signed message part

Is there going to be a way for people to replace the changelog with one that contains useful information in that case? I've been doing this by doing a make-kpkg configure and then editing the debian/changelog file afterwards... BTW, I have a set of patches you might want to consider. I'll file them in BTS if you're currently making make-kpkg. - Ted -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-kernel-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? The depca driver is in the nic-extra-modules udeb and the aha1740 is in the scsi-modules udeb, so both of these are available to the installer. Can you check the installer logs to see what happens when the kernel tries to load these drivers? > Just waiting the compile to finish. I wish you luck with this build, but that won't be a fix that can be applied to the Debian package; we need to have this working with the stock Debian kernel image, built with ALPHA_GENERIC set. It's possible that the kernel's Documentation/eisa.txt provides some guidance here: ** Kernel parameters : [...] virtual_root.force_probe : Force the probing code to probe EISA slots even when it cannot find an EISA compliant mainboard (nothing appears on slot 0). Defaultd to 0 (don't force), and set to 1 (force probing) when either CONFIG_ALPHA_JENSEN or CONFIG_EISA_VLB_PRIMING are set. Perhaps you could try passing virtual_root.force_probe=1 as a kernel option when booting the installer, to see if that fixes the problem for you? -- Steve Langasek Give me a lever long enough and a Free OS Debian Developer to set it on, and I can move the world.
