Bug#544997: nvidiafb: BUG: soft lockup - CPU#1 stuck for 61s!
Package: linux-2.6 Version: 2.6.30-6 Severity: normal This bug is quite reproducible on my machine: 0. Start gpm. 1. Repeat a few times, until the screen freezes: - Select a large amount of text with mouse. - Switch to another vt. 2. Wait a few minutes. 3. The screen unfreezes, but is totally garbled, and dmesg shows something like this: [ 9677.637004] BUG: soft lockup - CPU#1 stuck for 61s! Bug#544145: 32bit binaries on x86_64/Xen segfaults in syscall-vdso
On Fri, Sep 04, 2009 at 09:07:39AM -0700, Jeremy Fitzhardinge wrote: On 09/03/09 15:36, Bastian Blank wrote: This function looks weird. It tries to restores the user code segment. But the documentation from AMD explicitely stat that the CS and SS are restored from the STAR register. But the Xen setup (the relevant one) looks different: | #define FLAT_RING3_CS32 0xe023 | wrmsr(MSR_STAR, 0, (FLAT_RING3_CS3216) | __HYPERVISOR_CS); But this does not match my observation either. And even the native Linux kernel uses iret to jump out of a compat (32bit) syscall. No, I don't want to understand this, but it looks highly broken. Your symptoms are odd; either its landing back in userspace in the right place but then stumbles on for a while before crashing (wrong processor mode?) or the eip is wrong and its just landing in the wrong place and crashing immediately. Bug#545064: initramfs-tools: update-initramfs fails to include /lib/libc.so.6 and /lib/libm.so
Package: initramfs-tools Version: 0.92o Severity: critical Justification: breaks the whole system Whenever a new RAM disk is created (for instance with update-initramfs -u -k all), the above mentioned libc files are missing in the image. If I use the package busybox, the kernel will panic because libm.so is not found, if I use busybox-static, it fails to find libc.so.6 at an even earlier stage. The computer has been running Etch with backports, and has been upgraded to Lenny after Lenny became stable. The two files are actually not included in the generated RAM disks, while those RAM disks created with earlier versions of initramfs-tools do contain them, and they work as expected if I replace any failing new one with such an old one. -- Package-specific info: -- /proc/cmdline root=/dev/rd/c0d1p1 ro video=atyfb:1024x768-16 lapic resume=/dev/rd/c0d0p1 ide0=ata66 -- /proc/filesystems ext3 fuseblk xfs -- lsmod Module Size Used by nls_utf81824 0 cifs 208948 0 nls_base6916 2 nls_utf8,cifs binfmt_misc 7688 1 ipv6 237316 25 nfsd 187184 10 auth_rpcgss34144 1 nfsd exportfs4000 1 nfsd nfs 214152 0 lockd 54504 2 nfsd,nfs nfs_acl 2976 2 nfsd,nfs sunrpc163264 13 nfsd,auth_rpcgss,nfs,lockd,nfs_acl quota_v28064 4 xfs 464344 1 fuse 43068 1 i2c_dev 5384 0 eeprom 5328 0 w83781d25896 0 hwmon_vid 2784 1 w83781d loop 12940 0 snd_pcm_oss32928 0 snd_mixer_oss 12448 1 snd_pcm_oss snd_pcm62884 1 snd_pcm_oss snd_timer 18056 1 snd_pcm parport_pc 22692 0 intel_agp 22524 1 snd45764 4 snd_pcm_oss,snd_mixer_oss,snd_pcm,snd_timer parport31212 1 parport_pc soundcore 6464 1 snd agpgart29000 1 intel_agp snd_page_alloc 7912 1 snd_pcm i2c_core 20052 3 i2c_dev,eeprom,w83781d pcspkr 2528 0 evdev 8128 0 ext3 105544 3 jbd39700 1 ext3 mbcache 7300 1 ext3 dm_mirror 15264 0 dm_log 8612 1 dm_mirror dm_snapshot14468 0 dm_mod 46408 6 dm_mirror,dm_log,dm_snapshot ide_cd_mod 27812 0 cdrom 30368 1 ide_cd_mod ide_disk 10624 2 ata_generic 4772 0 libata140608 1 ata_generic scsi_mod 129644 1 libata dock8400 1 libata piix6696 0 [permanent] uhci_hcd 18832 0 ide_pci_generic 4004 0 [permanent] ide_core 93012 4 ide_cd_mod,ide_disk,piix,ide_pci_generic floppy 47876 0 usbcore 118160 2 uhci_hcd thermal_sys10984 0 DAC960 57000 6 3c509 11724 0 atyfb 36940 1 -- /etc/kernel-img.conf # Kernel image management overrides # See kernel-img.conf(5) for details do_symlinks = yes relative_links = yes do_bootloader = no do_bootfloppy = no do_initrd = yes link_in_boot = no postinst_hook = update-grub postrm_hook = update-grub -- /etc/initramfs-tools/initramfs.conf MODULES=most BUSYBOX=y KEYMAP=n BOOT=local DEVICE=eth0 NFSROOT=auto -- System Information: Debian Release: 5.0.2 APT prefers stable APT policy: (990, 'stable'), (500, 'proposed-updates') Architecture: i386 (i686) Kernel: Linux 2.6.26-bpo.1-686 (SMP w/1 CPU core) Locale: LANG=de_DE.UTF-8, LC_CTYPE=de_DE.UTF-8 (charmap=UTF-8) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/bash Versions of packages initramfs-tools depends on: ii cpio 2.9-13 GNU cpio -- a program to manage ar ii findutils 4.4.0-2utilities for finding files--find, ii klibc-utils 1.5.12-2 small utilities built with klibc f ii module-init-tools 3.4-1 tools for managing Linux kernel mo ii udev 0.125-7+lenny1 /dev/ and hotplug management daemo Versions of packages initramfs-tools recommends: pn busybox | busybox-initramfs none (no description available) initramfs-tools suggests no packages. -- debconf-show failed -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-kernel-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Yesterday I tried to upgrade it to Lenny. No problem with the base kernel (2.6.26-2-686) : it just works perfectly. But of course it cannot take advantage of the 8 Gb installed. So I tried to install the bigmem kernel. It just refuses to boot ; I get thousand of messages like : aac_srb: aac_fib_send failed with status: 8195. And it finally drops into busybox, from where I have access to nothing. It seems to be an aacraid problem, but it sounds very strange since the basic kernel works like a charm ? ---End Message--- ---BeginMessage--- Source: linux-2.6 Source-Version: 2.6.26-19 We believe that the bug you reported is fixed in the latest version of linux-2.6, which is due to be installed in the Debian FTP archive: linux-2.6_2.6.26-19.diff.gz to pool/main/l/linux-2.6/linux-2.6_2.6.26-19.diff.gz linux-2.6_2.6.26-19.dsc to pool/main/l/linux-2.6/linux-2.6_2.6.26-19.dsc linux-doc-2.6.26_2.6.26-19_all.deb to pool/main/l/linux-2.6/linux-doc-2.6.26_2.6.26-19_all.deb linux-headers-2.6.26-2-486_2.6.26-19_i386.deb to pool/main/l/linux-2.6/linux-headers-2.6.26-2-486_2.6.26-19_i386.deb linux-headers-2.6.26-2-686-bigmem_2.6.26-19_i386.deb to pool/main/l/linux-2.6/linux-headers-2.6.26-2-686-bigmem_2.6.26-19_i386.deb linux-headers-2.6.26-2-686_2.6.26-19_i386.deb to pool/main/l/linux-2.6/linux-headers-2.6.26-2-686_2.6.26-19_i386.deb linux-headers-2.6.26-2-all-i386_2.6.26-19_i386.deb to pool/main/l/linux-2.6/linux-headers-2.6.26-2-all-i386_2.6.26-19_i386.deb linux-headers-2.6.26-2-all_2.6.26-19_i386.deb to pool/main/l/linux-2.6/linux-headers-2.6.26-2-all_2.6.26-19_i386.deb linux-headers-2.6.26-2-amd64_2.6.26-19_i386.deb to pool/main/l/linux-2.6/linux-headers-2.6.26-2-amd64_2.6.26-19_i386.deb linux-headers-2.6.26-2-common-openvz_2.6.26-19_i386.deb to pool/main/l/linux-2.6/linux-headers-2.6.26-2-common-openvz_2.6.26-19_i386.deb linux-headers-2.6.26-2-common-vserver_2.6.26-19_i386.deb to pool/main/l/linux-2.6/linux-headers-2.6.26-2-common-vserver_2.6.26-19_i386.deb linux-headers-2.6.26-2-common-xen_2.6.26-19_i386.deb to pool/main/l/linux-2.6/linux-headers-2.6.26-2-common-xen_2.6.26-19_i386.deb linux-headers-2.6.26-2-common_2.6.26-19_i386.deb to pool/main/l/linux-2.6/linux-headers-2.6.26-2-common_2.6.26-19_i386.deb linux-headers-2.6.26-2-openvz-686_2.6.26-19_i386.deb to pool/main/l/linux-2.6/linux-headers-2.6.26-2-openvz-686_2.6.26-19_i386.deb linux-headers-2.6.26-2-vserver-686-bigmem_2.6.26-19_i386.deb to pool/main/l/linux-2.6/linux-headers-2.6.26-2-vserver-686-bigmem_2.6.26-19_i386.deb linux-headers-2.6.26-2-vserver-686_2.6.26-19_i386.deb to pool/main/l/linux-2.6/linux-headers-2.6.26-2-vserver-686_2.6.26-19_i386.deb linux-headers-2.6.26-2-xen-686_2.6.26-19_i386.deb to pool/main/l/linux-2.6/linux-headers-2.6.26-2-xen-686_2.6.26-19_i386.deb linux-image-2.6.26-2-486_2.6.26-19_i386.deb to pool/main/l/linux-2.6/linux-image-2.6.26-2-486_2.6.26-19_i386.deb linux-image-2.6.26-2-686-bigmem_2.6.26-19_i386.deb to pool/main/l/linux-2.6/linux-image-2.6.26-2-686-bigmem_2.6.26-19_i386.deb linux-image-2.6.26-2-686_2.6.26-19_i386.deb to pool/main/l/linux-2.6/linux-image-2.6.26-2-686_2.6.26-19_i386.deb linux-image-2.6.26-2-amd64_2.6.26-19_i386.deb to pool/main/l/linux-2.6/linux-image-2.6.26-2-amd64_2.6.26-19_i386.deb linux-image-2.6.26-2-openvz-686_2.6.26-19_i386.deb to pool/main/l/linux-2.6/linux-image-2.6.26-2-openvz-686_2.6.26-19_i386.deb linux-image-2.6.26-2-vserver-686-bigmem_2.6.26-19_i386.deb to pool/main/l/linux-2.6/linux-image-2.6.26-2-vserver-686-bigmem_2.6.26-19_i386.deb linux-image-2.6.26-2-vserver-686_2.6.26-19_i386.deb to pool/main/l/linux-2.6/linux-image-2.6.26-2-vserver-686_2.6.26-19_i386.deb linux-image-2.6.26-2-xen-686_2.6.26-19_i386.deb to pool/main/l/linux-2.6/linux-image-2.6.26-2-xen-686_2.6.26-19_i386.deb linux-libc-dev_2.6.26-19_i386.deb to pool/main/l/linux-2.6/linux-libc-dev_2.6.26-19_i386.deb linux-manual-2.6.26_2.6.26-19_all.deb to

Bug#540831: blacklisting pcspkr ruins beep(1), and icewm' mail beep
! Jidanni, in #544496 you mentioned a ruined sound. Can you hear ! music? Do you mean that only your beep has gone? Well in that case I Yes, mplayer not affected by this bug, only beep and icewm mail beep ! propose to reanable pcspkr and reassign 540831 to linux-latest-2.6. | jidanni, a few questions about your lack of a console beep: Yes must insert modules to get beep(1) to work. diff(1) shows amixer output is not affected by module insertion. Left most control in alsamixer affects mplayer, but not beep(1). Only Thinkpad special buttons affect beep(1) volume. mplayer unaffected by this Bug#540831. alsamixer too complicated for worried me to fiddle with. Send me a shell script to run if you need exact output. $ amixer info Card default 'I82801DBICH4'/'Intel 82801DB-ICH4 with AD1981B at irq 11' Mixer name: 'Analog Devices AD1981B' Components: 'AC97a:41445374' Controls : 28 Simple ctrls : 20 Tell me if you want the whole amixer output. | Does modprobe -r pcspkr make the console beep stop working again? yes |- Does modprobe snd-pcsp make the console beep work again? Does the yes | ALSA mixer let you control it, and in particular mute and unmute it? no, m on leftmost item mutes mplayer, but not beep. | Does commenting out the blacklist snd-pcsp in | alsa-base-blacklist.conf make the console beep work after you boot | your system? Does snd-pcsp properly come up as the second sound | card, not the first? I would rather not edit files or reboot at this point. |(And to answer the question in your other mail, if your ALSA driver does |not support the console beep, that *seems* like a bug in the ALSA |driver; you should report that against the linux-image-2.6.foo package |for your kernel if you use the stock kernel with its built-in ALSA |drivers, or against alsa-driver if you build ALSA drivers from the |alsa-source package.) All I know is I use $ apt-cache policy linux-image-2.6.30-1-686 ... Installed: 2.6.30-6 ! As mentioned by others in this thread you should check your sound ! card for the ability to simulate a terminal beep, what most drivers I do not know how to check my soundcard. ! do. Mailnotification and system sounds can also be handled by your ! soundcard, though. But if you use your internal speaker (maybe a ! piezo one?) for all your sound, then you really need pcspkr, which ! is proposed to use on embedded sytems by the kernel maintainers. Are ! you using such one? I use IBM Thinkpad r50e. ! Anyway, it is not a question of Debians alsa-base. If one build ! pcspkr from our alsa-source package (s)he knows what (s)he is doing. ! Removing the blacklisting of pcspkr from alsa-base is consistent in ! that case. Will be done next upload. All I know is it used to beep when mail arrived... #544496 will be fixed in 1.0.21 upload. Well, OK, thanks everybody. Be sure to Cc: me if needed as I suppose soon again things will worksforme. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-kernel-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Bug#545101: linux-image-2.6.26-2-orion5x: MV2120 hangs with heavy JFS disk use
Package: linux-image-2.6.26-2-orion5x Version: 2.6.26-17lenny2 Severity: important I am using lenny on a HP MV2120. When transfering a number of files to a share and using ssh login the heavy disk activity seemed to hang the system. I had to remove power to recover. I use LVM/JFS on all partitions except /boot which is ext2.
