Bug#577640: Another oops + repost

2010-07-22 Thread Martín Ferrari
Hi again,

First of all, I would like to know if anybody was able to fix this
problem that got kinda lost in the thread:

Secondly, I discovered another related bug, just more subtle.

I'm creating a dummy device, moving it into a name space and then
taking it back to netns 1. Later, when I delete the dummy, I get an
oops:

Bug#589945: linux-image-2.6.32-5-amd64: NFS client hangs

2010-07-22 Thread Andrew Chittenden
Package: linux-2.6
Version: 2.6.32-17
Severity: important

This looks to be a similar problem to
http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=578152 but I cannot
post to that bug as it's been archived.

If I do this in 4 different xterm windows having cd to the same NFS
mounted directory:

xterm1: rm -rf *
xterm2: while true; do let iter+=1; echo $iter; dd if=/dev/zero
of=$$ bs=1M count=1000; done
xterm3: while true; do let iter+=1; echo $iter; dd if=/dev/zero
of=$$ bs=1M count=1000; done
xterm4: while true; do let iter+=1; echo $iter; dd if=/dev/zero
of=$$ bs=1M count=1000; done

then it normally hangs before the 3rd iteration starts. The directory
contains loads of information (eg 5 linux source trees).

When it gets into this hang state, here's the packets from the client to server:

4   42.909478   172.18.0.39 10.1.6.102  TCP 1013 > nfs [SYN] Seq=0 Win=5840
Len=0 MSS=1460 TSV=108490 TSER=0 WS=0
5   42.909577   10.1.6.102  172.18.0.39 TCP nfs > 1013 [SYN, ACK] Seq=0 Ack=1
Win=64240 Len=0 MSS=1460
6   42.909610   172.18.0.39 10.1.6.102  TCP 1013 > nfs [ACK] Seq=1 Ack=1
Win=5840 Len=0
7   42.909672   172.18.0.39 10.1.6.102  TCP 1013 > nfs [FIN, ACK] Seq=1 Ack=1
Win=5840 Len=0
8   42.909767   10.1.6.102  172.18.0.39 TCP nfs > 1013 [ACK] Seq=1 Ack=2
Win=64240 Len=0
9   43.660083   10.1.6.102  172.18.0.39 TCP nfs > 1013 [FIN, ACK] Seq=1 Ack=2
Win=64240 Len=0
10  43.660100   172.18.0.39 10.1.6.102  TCP 1013 > nfs [ACK] Seq=2 Ack=2
Win=5840 Len=0

and then repeats after a while.

IE the client starts a connection and then closes it again without
sending data.

FWIW I've found it easier to reproduce this problem if Ethernet flow
control is off but it still happens with it on as well. This happens
with different types of Ethernet hardware too. The rm -rf isn't necessary
either but makes the problem easier to reproduce (for me anyway).

The mount options are:

# mount | grep u15
sweet.dev.bluearc.com:/u15 on /u/u15 type nfs
(rw,noatime,nodiratime,hard,intr,rsize=32768,wsize=32768,proto=tcp,hard,intr,rsize=32768,wsize=32768,sloppy,addr=10.1.6.102)

I've generated a stock 2.6.34.1 kernel and that also has the same
problem. We don't encounter this problem with the 2.6.26 package currently
in lenny:

# dpkg --status linux-image-2.6.26-2-amd64 | grep Version
Version: 2.6.26-22lenny1

As this problem is still present in 2.6.34.1, I've posted a message to
http://lkml.org/lkml/2010/7/22/185 as well.

Bug#584881: Lockups under heavy disk IO; md (RAID) resync/check implicated

But I do see a deadlock on the barrier between resync and normal I/O, as
you suspected. Every process is blocked in wait_barrier(),
raise_barrier() or a filesystem lock.

The only explanations I can think of are:
1. The regular I/O requests were miscounted so that the resync process
will wait forever for them to complete in raise_barrier(), while the
other processes wait forever for the barrier to be lowered. (It seems
like the directions of this barrier are inverted. Maybe it is really a
bollard.)
2. The wait condition of one of the waiters was met, but it wasn't
woken.
3. A thread which raised the barrier failed to lower the barrier.
4. A thread which raised the barrier caused paging.

Unfortunately I can't see any evidence for any of these.

The following patch should give us some chance of detecting cases 1 and
3.  The instructions at

 explain how to rebuild an official kernel package with a patch applied.

Ben.

Hi.

I'm using a custom kernel, where the IWL4965 drivers are compiled in
statically. Also the system
uses initramfs images for booting.

Since 2.6.34, the WLAN device no longer works:
The device is correctly detected:

[1.134814] iwlagn :14:00.0: firmware: requesting iwlwifi-4965-2.ucode

however, the firmware cannot be loaded during boot:
[1.493944] iwlagn :14:00.0: request for firmware file
'iwlwifi-4965-2.ucode' failed.
[1.494178] iwlagn :14:00.0: no suitable firmware found!
[1.494529] iwlagn :14:00.0: PCI INT A disabled

The firmware is not included in the initramfs image,.. but the strange thing
now is:
It wasn't included in the 2.6.33 kernel initramfs either.

Has anything changed there in loding the firmwares?

Thanks,
Chris.

Yes i think it should be ok to remove it after your patch.
I would like to test it but might not have the hw handy.

Bug#589963: preinst fails if awk is unpacked but not configured

2010-07-22 Thread Goswin von Brederlow
Package: initramfs-tools
Version: 0.96.1
Severity: normal

Hi,

when cdebootstraping an Ubuntu Lucid system initramfs-tools gets
installed now. The problem then is that at the point initramfs-tools
is unpacked the mawk package is unpacked but not configured. That
means the /usr/bin/awk alternative is not yet setup.

While this could be blamed on cdebootstrap I think it might be a good
idea to fix initramfs-tools. The relevant command is

  awk ' { print $1 } '

which really does not need awk. "cut" would do instead and avoid the
rather probelamtic pseudo-essential awk issue.

This is not a supported configuration. In theory you can use
CONFIG_FIRMWARE_IN_KERNEL to make this work, but I believe that requires
that the firmware images are included in the kernel source tree.

initramfs-tools relies on module information to work out which firmware
should be included in the initramfs. There is no way to get that
information for drivers included in a monolithic kernel. Further, some
drivers will request firmware when probing devices, before the initramfs
has even been mounted.

Ben.

I can't reproduce this on 2.6.35-rc1+

Can you please test a 2.6.35-rc version? If you can still reproduce
it there can you send me your .config? Otherwise I expect my last
round of changes to sysfs fixed whatever was the underlying problem.

Thanks,
Eric

I don't know, I just recently started using Debian testing on this computer.

In lenny AFAIK the pmu_battery module (and the functionality it
provides) was not available at all.

Bug#589996: Insane dependency on apt causes kernel to be removed on update

2010-07-22 Thread Goswin von Brederlow
Package: linux-base
Version: 2.6.32-17
Severity: important

Hi,

in the linux-image packages there is now a dependency chain from
linux-image-2.6... -> linux-base -> libapt-pkg-perl ->
libapt-pkg-libc6.9-6-4.8. Which is the virtual package provided by apt
to signal the ABI of its library and binary caches. In effect the
kernels are locked to a specific ABI version of apt. The problem is
that the ABI changes from time to time and every time it does an
update of apt will now remove the kernel for the duration of the
transition. For an example try installing apt from experimental.

Well, that is life you might say. That is what is called a library
transition.

But here comes the insane part. The 1637 line long perl postinst
script of linux-base only depends on apt because of this code at the
end:

sub compare_versions {
return $AptPkg::Config::_config->system->versioning->compare(@_);
}

if ($ARGV[0] eq 'reconfigure' || defined($ENV{DEBCONF_RECONFIGURE}) ||
(!is_fresh_installation() &&
 compare_versions($ARGV[1], $libata_transition_ver) < 0)) {
DebianKernel::DiskId::transition();
}

Could I suggest replacing this with a call to

  system('dpkg', '--compare-versions', $ARGV[1], '>>', $libata_transition_ver)

That way the dependency on apt can be droped completly.

MfG
Goswin

This regression is presumably due to the fix for bug #586967. I'll try
to decode this oops and work out what I've done wrong.

What's really insane is that we don't have a nice and stable library to
do this and instead I have to fork every time I want to compare two
strings.

Bug#589989: [PATCH net-next-2.6] 3c59x: Fix call to mdio_sync() with the wrong argument

2010-07-22 Thread Ben Hutchings
commit a095cfc40ec7ebe63e9532383c5b5c2a27b14075
"3c59x: Specify window explicitly for access to windowed registers"
changed the first parameter to mdio_sync(), from a pointer to the
register mapping, to a pointer to the vortex_private structure,
and changed all but one of the call sites. Fix that last one.

Bug#589231:

2010-07-22 Thread Onkar Shinde
The pmu_battery module was not built in kernels < 2.32 in Debian.

gnome-power-manager previously used some different methods for battery
detection. So it didn't depend on presence of pmu_battery. IIRC, the
problem started showing up since gnome-power-manager version 2.28. Now
it can not detect battery if the pmu_battery module is not loaded.

Cheers,
Onkar
