Bug#592428: Fix 2.6.32 XEN guest on old buggy RHEL5/EC2 hypervisor (XSAVE)
On 08/11/2010 07:23 PM, Ben Hutchings wrote: Your patch had mangled spacing around operators. I was able to fix it up in this case as the context is obvious, but please avoid Thunderbird for inline patches or find a way to avoid this bug. Ah, OK, I was wondering what had been happening; I've been getting a few comments about whitespace damage since it got updated. In previous versions pasting patches into a preformatted block worked perfectly. J -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-kernel-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Bug#592707: kernel should be protected against old package kvm-source
Source: linux-2.6 Severity: minor There was a package in Lenny, kvm-source, which contains kernel module for kvm subsystem and is built from package named kvm. All modern kernels includes kvm modules. Kvm package is now transitional to qemu-kvm, which does not provide any kernel modules or packages like kvm-source. kvm-source package has been removed from squeeze. When kvm-source package is installed, it replaces kvm modules in current kernel with old, obsolete ones, so that current kvm userspace does not work anymore. But current kernel includes more recent kvm modules which works correctly even with old userspace. So kvm-source breaks current kernels. It breaks even lenny's kernel (2.6.26), which includes more recent kvm modules than in kvm-source_72 (from lenny), and even more - 2.6.26 received a few security fixes for kvm modules which are not present in kvm-source. The only solution to this I see is to include Conflicts: into kernel against kvm-source (unversioned). Note that it is not sufficient to add such conflicts: to qemu-kvm (userspace component), because one may have installed kvm-source without qemu-kvm, kvm-source broke the kernel module (replacing it with older and buggy one), and later qemu-kvm is installed on already broken system. Thanks! /mjt -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-kernel-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? The partition starting sector and partition size are miscalculated under certain conditions. These conditions are as follows: (1) The Linux kernel is executing on the s390/s390x architecture (2) The Linux kernel is executing in a virtual machine under z/VM (3) The disk is FBA DASD (4) The disk is CMS formatted (the only disk format supported on FBA DASD) (5) The CMS logical block size is greater than 512 (6) the CMS RESERVE command has been issued to allocate all available space to a single CMS file (7) The DIAG driver (as opposed to the FBA driver) is being used for that disk. Under these conditions, the Linux kernel will treat the CMS RESERVEd minidisk as a non-reserved minidisk. Thus, once a file system or a swap space has been built on the disk by the Linux kernel, the CMS metadata gets clobbered, and the CMS minidisk can no longer be accessed by CMS. The problem is in fs/partitions/ibm.c, function ibm_partition. The algorithm used to calculate the sector in which the volume label is stored is incorrect. For FBA DASD, the volume label is always stored in the second physical 512-byte block (block number one with the blocks numbered starting with zero). This is true regardless of the logical block size. The FBA driver always uses a logical block size of 512 internally, regardless of the CMS logical block size; but the DIAG driver honors the CMS logical block size. As a result, if the CMS logical block size is greater than 512, the sector number of the disk label is calculated incorrectly, and garbage is read in for the disk label. For FBA DASD, one must always read sector number 1 to get the disk label, regardless of the logical block size. The following patch fixes the problem: http://www.wowway.com/~zlinuxman/kernel/ibm.c.diff This patch used the source code for kernel 2.6.32 as a base, but it will probably apply to multiple versions, since this routine doesn't get much maintenance. There is one down side to fixing this problem: data on existing partitions, if they are affected by the miscalculation, may become unreadable. Fortunately, there is a simple fix for this problem, and it can be applied beforehand. Set the disk_offset field of the volume label to zero. This will cause the disk to be treated as a non-reserved CMS minidisk, and the partition location and size will be calculated as before. I am working on a little utility to do this and will post it to my web site when I am finished. Please send this upstream. Or, if you prefer, I can send it upstream myself. Nevertheless, I wanted a Debian bug report created to serve as a problem log. -- .''`. The Fedora link is: http://cvs.fedoraproject.org/viewvc/F-13/kernel/fix_xen_guest_on_old_EC2.patch And the Ubuntu link: http://kernel.ubuntu.com/git?p=rtg/ubuntu-maverick.git;a=commit;h=1a30f99 As far as I can tell, no released version of Xen currently supports XSAVE, so this change is effectively a NOP on all newer hypervisors, but it allows functionality on older hypervisors (such as RHEL5, or when running on Amazon's EC2 service). In particular, I'm trying to write a script that packages up a vmlinuz and initrd.gz from the Debian-Installer to allow them to be easily run unmodified in an Amazon EC2 VM (now that Amazon supports using your own custom kernel). Cheers, Kyle Moffett Legacy hypervisors (RHEL 5.0 and RHEL 5.1) do not handle guest writes to cr4 gracefully. If a guest attempts to write a bit of cr4 that is unsupported, then the HV is so offended it crashes the domain. While later guest kernels (such as RHEL6) don't assume the HV supports all features, they do expect nicer responses. That assumption introduced code that probes whether or not xsave is supported early in the boot. So now when attempting to boot a RHEL6 guest on RHEL5.0 or RHEL5.1 an early crash will occur. This patch is quite obviously an undesirable hack. The real fix for this problem should be in the HV, and is, in later HVs. However, to support running on old HVs, RHEL6 can take this small change. No impact will occur for running on any RHEL HV (not even RHEL 5.5 supports xsave). There is only potential for guest performance loss on upstream Xen. --- arch/x86/xen/enlighten.c |1 + 1 files changed, 1 insertions(+), 0 deletions(-) diff --git a/arch/x86/xen/enlighten.c b/arch/x86/xen/enlighten.c index 52f8e19..6db3d67 100644 --- a/arch/x86/xen/enlighten.c +++ b/arch/x86/xen/enlighten.c @@ -802,6 +802,7 @@ static void xen_write_cr4(unsigned long cr4) { cr4 = ~X86_CR4_PGE; cr4 = ~X86_CR4_PSE; + cr4 = ~X86_CR4_OSXSAVE; native_write_cr4(cr4); } -- 1.6.6.1 ---End Message--- ---BeginMessage--- Source: linux-2.6 Source-Version: 2.6.32-20 We believe that the bug you reported is fixed in the latest version of linux-2.6, which is due to be installed in the Debian FTP archive: firmware-linux-free_2.6.32-20_all.deb to main/l/linux-2.6/firmware-linux-free_2.6.32-20_all.deb linux-2.6_2.6.32-20.diff.gz to main/l/linux-2.6/linux-2.6_2.6.32-20.diff.gz linux-2.6_2.6.32-20.dsc to main/l/linux-2.6/linux-2.6_2.6.32-20.dsc linux-base_2.6.32-20_all.deb to main/l/linux-2.6/linux-base_2.6.32-20_all.deb linux-doc-2.6.32_2.6.32-20_all.deb to main/l/linux-2.6/linux-doc-2.6.32_2.6.32-20_all.deb linux-manual-2.6.32_2.6.32-20_all.deb to main/l/linux-2.6/linux-manual-2.6.32_2.6.32-20_all.deb linux-patch-debian-2.6.32_2.6.32-20_all.deb to main/l/linux-2.6/linux-patch-debian-2.6.32_2.6.32-20_all.deb linux-source-2.6.32_2.6.32-20_all.deb to main/l/linux-2.6/linux-source-2.6.32_2.6.32-20_all.deb linux-support-2.6.32-5_2.6.32-20_all.deb to main/l/linux-2.6/linux-support-2.6.32-5_2.6.32-20_all.deb A summary of the changes between this version and the previous one is attached. Bug#584583: [PATCH] Additional fix for ipconfig
[ adding relevant cc's ] On Tue, 10 Aug 2010, Julien-externe BLACHE wrote: Hi, Attached is a second patch for ipconfig, which further improves (actually, restores) ipconfig's behaviour on busy LANs with UDP noise. Commit 4efbcf90f60e27febe883ef052454d8cfded5c15 really is the root of all evil, it badly broke ipconfig by doing a lot of changes all over the place that were not warranted and badly tested. Indeed as mailinglist history show I had been sceptic to that monster patch, but several users had pushed for it, see: http://bugs.debian.org/511959 After this commit, if a random UDP packet comes in before the expected DHCP reply packet_recv() will exit with an error and the interface will be sent into DEVST_ERROR instead of just ignoring this packet. On busy LANs, ipconfig can go through this loop several times. JB. as mika is currently on vacation after Debconf. I will look into the issue and see if said patch resolves his testcase which is nicely layed out in http://bugs.debian.org/552554 thank you for the patch. -- maks -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-kernel-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#592780: linux-image-2.6.32-5-amd64: pv-ops DomU kernel doesn't forward network traffic
Package: linux-2.6 Version: 2.6.32-18 Severity: normal At work we have 4 Dom0s, all of them with different hardware. When 2.6.32 with pv-ops appeared on Debian testing (squeeze) we started testing it. Everything went fine until we tried to configure an OpenVPN server on a DomU. We found out that forwarding traffic was not working. We tried hard to debug the problem (tcpdump, wireshark, etc) and packets reached the DomU but they never left. After testing the DomU on every version of the Xen hypervisor (from Debian, 3.2, 3.4 and 4) and on every DomO we have we discovered almost by chance that with the -xen flavour of the kernel package the problem disappeared. AFAIK the -xen kernel has the forward-ported patches from 2.6.26, so most probably this has something to do with pv-ops. If I can be of any help just ask, I'd be glad to. Thanks. -- Package-specific info: ** Version: Linux version 2.6.32-5-amd64 (Debian 2.6.32-18) (b...@decadent.org.uk) (gcc version 4.3.5 (Debian 4.3.5-2) ) #1 SMP Sat Jul 24 01:47:24 UTC 2010 ** Command line: root=/dev/xvda2 ro root=/dev/xvda2 ro ip=:127.0.255.255eth0:dhcp ** Not tainted ** Kernel log: [0.050975] type=2000 audit(1280879563.802:1): initialized [0.053240] HugeTLB registered 2 MB page size, pre-allocated 0 pages [0.054473] VFS: Disk quotas dquot_6.5.2 [0.054521] Dquot-cache hash table entries: 512 (order 0, 4096 bytes) [0.054600] msgmni has been set to 1997 [0.054838] alg: No test for stdrng (krng) [0.054891] Block layer SCSI generic (bsg) driver version 0.4 loaded (major 253) [0.054899] io scheduler noop registered [0.054903] io scheduler anticipatory registered [0.054907] io scheduler deadline registered [0.054935] io scheduler cfq registered (default) [0.056325] Linux agpgart interface v0.103 [0.056352] Serial: 8250/16550 driver, 4 ports, IRQ sharing enabled [0.056508] input: Macintosh mouse button emulation as /devices/virtual/input/input0 [0.056552] PNP: No PS/2 controller found. It is a regression in NFS code. When copying a large file (larger than the amount of available physical memory) to an NFS-mounted filesystem, swapper and rpciod on the client complain about page allocation failures and then kswapd goes into a deadlock, resulting in a system-wide crash. https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=16056 The following patch fixes it: dcafd9eb464f5a87512f28c133386773a596261 Author: Trond Myklebust trond.mykleb...@netapp.com Date: Wed Jul 14 16:51:48 2010 -0400 NFS: Don't let kswapd call nfs_wb_page() kswapd sets the GFP_KERNEL allocation flags, but is still liable to cause the system to lock up if it has to wait too long for an RPC call etc to succeed. Just for the record, I made the bug report on a squeeze DomU (oxigeno) running on a squeeze Dom0 (carbono), which is neither the DomU where the OpenVPN stuff happened nor the testing DomU we used to investigate later. Though it's the same kind of DomU and the testing machine doesn't exist any more. I did it there just in case reportbug collected some useful info from the running kernel. Also notice that as we do not forward on oxigeno we haven't changed it to -xen.
