Bug#609330: release-notes: update-grub seems not to be called by the kernel upon upgrade

2011-01-08 Thread Philipp Kern
Package: release-notes
Severity: normal

Hi,

I just tried to upgrade a system following the release notes to the
letter. This means doing first "apt-get upgrade", then installing a new
kernel and udev, reboot, then doing a full "dist-upgrade".

After reboot only the *old* kernel was present in the grub menu, not the
new one. grub2 (to replace the installed grub1) was only installed
*after* the reboot during the dist-upgrade. (So I did upgrade, install
linux and udev, reboot, update-grub, reboot, dist-upgrade instead.)

After the installation of grub2 I properly get a hook in
/etc/kernel/postinst.d to call update-grub. Is it possible that you
should either update grub2 more early in the process or run update-grub
manually after the kernel installation and before the reboot?

It's not entirely clear to me how it's supposed to happen or if it's
just user error in the configuration files of the Lenny installation
that was upgraded.

Kind regards
Philipp Kern

The images are supposed to define a break-relation with the affected
bootloaders. Not sure why this missed.

It wasn't. update-grub has never been called explicitly from the
linux-image maintainer scripts. Instead, debian-installer used to set
postinst_hook and postrm_hook in /etc/kernel-img.conf if the user chose
to install GRUB.

A subsequent installation of GRUB would not install any hook. This is a
longstanding bug and is not related to the recent changes in linux-image
maintainer scripts, therefore a Breaks relation is not appropriate. I
think this does belong in release-notes.

Ben.

Severity: important

Dear Sir,

My clients hangs on mounting their home at boot

# mount /home/

Now I do this on the server NFS:
 /etc/init.d/nfs-kernel-server restart

And I try again on the client:

r...@toshiba:/# mount /home/

Here it is now.

The server has something wrong in NFS exporting and shareing.

Please a fix would be great because it is not yet stable.

Bug#609371: linux-image-2.6.37-trunk-sparc64: module scsi_mod: Unknown relocation: 36

2011-01-08 Thread Richard Mortimer
Package: linux-2.6
Version: 2.6.37-1~experimental.1
Severity: normal

Boot of linux-image-2.6.37-trunk-sparc64 fails to find the disks and drops
to the initramfs prompt. When I try to load the sym53c8xx driver it fails
as follows

(initramfs) modprobe sym53c8xx
[ 122.470284] module scsi_mod: Unknown relocation: 36
FATAL: Error inserting sym53c8xx (/lib/modules/2.6.37-trunk-sparc64/kernel/drive
rs/scsi/sym53c8xx_2/sym53c8xx.ko): Invalid module format
(initramfs)

A quick web search finds a similar issue
http://kerneltrap.org/mailarchive/linux-kernel/2010/6/16/4583942
but I have not looked into this any further yet.

For reference the current lenny kernel boots fine on this machine.

David, do you have any idea how this could happen?

That was apparently a bug in the build scripts for a separate module.

Ben.

And like that case bad build flags are causing this problem too. It
means that "-mcode-model=medlow" is not making it into the module
build cflags somehow.

This relocation can only occur for sparc64 code models other than
"medlow".

[PATCH] module, bug: Add TAINT_OOT_MODULE flag for modules that weren't built in-tree

2011-01-08 Thread Ben Hutchings
This makes it easier to spot out-of-tree modules. We have enough
bugs of our own to deal with, before supporting these.

I want to apply this to squeeze. I've seen one too many panics with
VMware or VirtualBox modules in them, which appear to be worse than
anything in drivers/staging.

Ben.
