Bug#651199: iwlwifi: Connection lost on "WPA: Group rekeying"

2011-12-15 Thread Marco d'Itri
This could be the same bug I am experiencing. Facts:
- 3.1 has it, 3.0 does not
- everything works fine while I am at home (WPA2 PSK)
- my connections break very often when I am at work (WEP)
- "wpa_cli reassociate" fixed the link
- "iw event -t" does not log anything when the link breaks
- I do not use NM, just plain wpa_supplicant

I am not 100% certain, but link loss appears to be perfectly correlated
with the "WPA: Group rekeying completed with (...) [GTK=TKIP]" messages
from wpa_supplicant in syslog.

What else can I do to debug this?

This may or may not be related to #649412.

Bug#650119: linux-image-3.1.0-1-amd64: fails to boot on HP DL380 g4

Ben:

Now comes the head-scratching part. When I modify the grub boot
command line to send output to my laptop through the serial port it
boots correctly!

Serial logging will change the timing of the boot sequence.

[0.00] Command line: BOOT_IMAGE=/boot/vmlinuz-3.1.0-1-amd64
root=UUID=155d483d-563c-4c25-b9f2-bf0b61e14041 ro console=ttyS0,9600
console=tty0
and the cciss IRQ gets rerouted to 19.

The output appears on both my laptop and the main console screen. I
can capture the output on the laptop and the kernel captures it
in /var/log.

If I boot it with this command line it will lock up every time.

Command line: BOOT_IMAGE=/boot/vmlinuz-3.1.0-1-amd64
root=UUID=155d483d-563c-4c25-b9f2-bf0b61e14041 ro

The attached file CAPTURE.TXT was created on an old IBM laptop running
Win2k using Hyperterm and sneaker-netted to the Proliant using a USB
stick. That means that at least the front USB port is working.

But not one of the other USB ports, it seems:

[...]

[   10.834493] cciss :04:03.0: PCI IRQ 51 ->  rerouted to legacy IRQ 19
[   10.834515] cciss :04:03.0: PCI INT A ->  GSI 19 (level, low) ->  IRQ 19
[ 10.892092] cciss :04:03.0: cciss0:<0x46> at PCI :04:03.0 IRQ 19
using DAC

[...]

[   13.381713] uhci_hcd :00:1d.1: PCI INT B ->  GSI 19 (level, low) ->  IRQ
19
[ 13.467200] uhci_hcd :00:1d.1: UHCI Host Controller
[ 13.529832] uhci_hcd :00:1d.1: new USB bus registered, assigned bus
number 3
[ 13.618540] uhci_hcd :00:1d.1: request interrupt 19 failed

[...]

Now, because both of these devices are using legacy PCI interrupts, they
should be able to share IRQ 19. But the cciss driver was changed in
Linux 2.6.36 so that it refuses to share an IRQ. Mike, why was that?

It was one of those "DUH!" moments. I had not considered the older
controllers that did not support MSI/MSI-X.

Here's a patch to fix that:

Bug#650119: linux-image-3.1.0-1-amd64: fails to boot on HP DL380 g4

2011-12-15 Thread Carl-Valentin Schmitt
Hello ?

When I am not wrong some stable kernels are taken from the list at
kernel.org
cause they were buggy ... only few are left.

I had trouble with 3.1.2 and still with 3.1.5 (both stable), cause they
dont boot
and hang themselves up with:
FATAL: Could not load /lib/modules/3.1.x/modules.dep: No such file or
directory

Installation was done correctly.

Greetings
Val.

It clearly wasn't. Most likely, 'depmod' was not run.

Now stop writing to random bugs.

Bug#652280: /init calls non existent /scripts/init-premount

2011-12-15 Thread Sebastien Hinderer
Package: initramfs-tools
Version: 0.99
Severity: normal

Hello,

I'm really not sure whether this is a bug or not. If it is, I find it very
strange that it has not been reported already because it seems important
to me.

Anyway: /innit:210:
run_scripts /scripts/init-premount
But the /scripts/init-premount directory does not exist.

On the other hand, there's a directory /scripts/local-premount which is
never mentionned in the init script.

Thus I'm wondering whether there isn't an error in the init script o in the
directory's name and whether they shouldn't be the same.
Sorry if this is not a bug!

The directory is documented in man initramfs-tools.

Even if it may be currently unused that is not a bug nor an error.

Thanks for checking so quickly. Marking accordingly.

Stephen, once it hits mainline, would 6225da481597 be a candidate for
the current-maintained stable trees >= 2.6.36, or does it have any
prerequisites or followups that should go with it?

Yes. That IRQF_SHARED needs to be in there for the non MSI interrupt path
and it should never have been taken out.

2011-12-15 Thread Tim Gardner
Hi Ben - does linux-firmware.git have a new home? I've not seen an
update in David's repo in awhile, and your's seems to be missing.

git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/dwmw2/linux-firmware.git
git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/bwh/linux-firmware.git

I scraped the binaries for RTL8111F from patchworks:

http://patchwork.ozlabs.org/patch/112825/

I also remember reading at least one email where you said you would
commit it (May 2011), but danged if I can find that one again.

This is not the correct way to submit patches for inclusion in the
stable kernel tree. Please read Documentation/stable_kernel_rules.txt
for how to do this properly.

I thought step 1 in the right way was for the patch to hit mainline. :)

The patch:

 - is obviously correct and tested against 3.1.y
 - is very short
 - fixes only one thing
 - fixes a real bug that bothered people (boot failure)
 - also removes the deprecated IRQF_DISABLED flag; I'd be happy to undo
that part and get another round of testing before sending it to you
 - would obviously follow Documentation/SubmittingPatches rules when
   sending it to you
 - does *not* yet have an analog in linus's tree. BTW, I'm not sure
   why this isn't in Jens's for-linus branch.

Yes it is, and until that happens, why are you emailing
sta...@vger.kernel.org about this? There's nothing I can do about it at
this point in time, except have it cause me extra work :(

That last one is the stickler, please work on that, without that,
there's nothing I can do here.

Got it. Thanks for explaining.

I had misinterpreted [1] to mean you were interested in discussion of
patches destined for stable before their time comes.

New heuristic: cc stable@ on _patch submissions_ to mainline aimed for
stable (and the resulting review) but not other discussion.

Sorry for the noise,
Jonathan

Hello Elimar, Jordi

I am original submitter of this bug [1] and I contact you as admins of
pkg-alsa-devel

To be confused by your answer here, I would like to ask what is your attitude
to the process of including missing alsa-firmwares to linux-firmware-non-free
package?

I think it was quite natural that alsa-devel has been asked for opinion and
help or am I wrong?

Sadly this process seems to be stuck now :(

Best regards

mira

There should be a shared repository at:

git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/firmware/linux-firmware.gi

but that requires some custom setup. I've just sent a request to the
kernel.org admins to re-create it. In the mean time, I can re-create my
repository and David and I can merge back and forth as necessary.

Ben.

I'm still kind of waiting on these. Stefan Bader had some concerns and
encouraged Citrix to work on getting them upstream, but I haven't seen a
lot of movement on them.

I don't think the feature is useful it it's too easy to disable.
Experience has shown this with license tags.

We really want to indicate "out-of-support" which is only a 1:1
mapping to out-of-tree for upstream kernels.

How does Debian handle this?

Perhaps it makes more sense to use the proposed module signing stuff in
a simplified mode to mark built-with-kernel modules (eg. just put the
sha of known modules inside the kernel).

I think we should revert this change, meanwhile, and figure out what to
do.

Cheers,
Rusty.

Who are 'we' in this instance?

> How does Debian handle this?

All the modules in Debian's kernel binary packages are built in-tree.
Backported modules are patched in as necessary.

Debian includes many packages of OOT modules, but those are supported by
their respective maintainers and not the kernel team. So for the kernel
team, the 'O' flag does not mean 'unsupported' but may indicate that
another maintainer should handle the bug (or it may also be irrelevant
to the bug).

> Perhaps it makes more sense to use the proposed module signing stuff in

Unlike commercial distributions, no-one is paying Debian for support
contracts and no-one can game the system by hiding OOT modules. So it's
probably not worthwhile for us to use module signing at all.

However, supposing we did go down this route, I would guess that
checksums for ~3000 modules take up more space than the signature
checking code. Instead, we could perhaps generate a key pair during
build, include the public key in the kernel and then discard the private
key. (But getting entropy would likely be a problem for the key
generation.)

It's back up again. I merged David's master branch into mine and pushed
