Bug#596528: [squeeze] system freeze with usb 3.0 devices attached

Sorry for the long quiet. My impression is that the answer is "no".
But it might be possible to make it so one bugfix at a time.

Guillaume, would you be interested in pursuing this? I would suggest
the following method:

 1. First, check if 3.x.y kernels from sid or experimental work well.
If they don't, we can get help from upstream. The only packages
from outside squeeze that should be needed for this test aside
from the kernel image itself are linux-base and initramfs-tools.

 2. Next, try a test with the patches Ben suggested applied. I can
guide you through this. And if that works, we can look more
closely and for example try narrowing down which ones are important
on your system.

 3. If those patches aren't enough, bisect through the kernels
available at http://snapshot.debian.org/ to find the first one
that works reliably, and then try applying the relevant patch to
squeeze.

What do you think?

Thanks for writing,
Jonathan

Just curious about whether later investigation revealed anything.
E.g., does the support in sid for this chip work?

Yes.

What was your first idea? I'm on Centos now (tried every distro) and don't see
these issues.

Bug#642571: NFS root no longer works with oldstable DHCP server

2012-01-28 Thread Mike
This is still a problem with version 2.6.32-41.

Comparing the packets sent between the DHCP client and server, I notice
that the latest kernel sets the DHCP 'secs' field. The DHCP server,
which should return 0 in 'secs', returns the client's 'secs' value
instead in its DHCPOFFER. Perhaps the client is discarding the response
because of this?

Isn't this redundant with the linux-image-*-dbg packages? Though those
are much larger.

For historical reasons the idle tasks are named 'swapper', but they
aren't involved in swapping! I don't think it's relevant that you don't
have swap space, though I don't advise such a configuration.

The major change in 1:1.2.5-4 was to use libmount for access to the
files /etc/fstab and /etc/mtab.

Could you report what the lines for this NFS mount look like in
/proc/mounts and in /etc/mtab (if the latter is a separate file) when
using each of these versions?

Ben.

Are you claiming that version 2.6.32-39squeeze1 is OK but version
2.6.32-41 is broken? Because I don't see any relevant changes there.

This warning was introduced as part of the fix for CVE-2011-4127. (But
it was not present in the preliminary fix used in 2.6.32-39squeeze1.)

I receive a "Unknown host" message on the first connections try with xchat
(irc), gnus (nntp+smtp); Iceweasel randomly works the same way.
The first time I saw this, was with the 3.1 kernel (from Debian or Fedora)
and 3.2 doesn't change that a bit. 2.6.32-39squeeze1 is ok.

2012-01-28 Thread Andreas B. Mundt
close 657802

Thanks

Conclusion for the record:

For kerberized NFSv4 on squeeze 6.0.4 you need:

[libdefaults]
permitted_enctypes = des-cbc-crc
allow_weak_crypto = true

in /etc/krb5.conf

Both won't be needed for wheezy anymore as kernel/nfs-utils/whatever
can then handle strong encryption.

Thanks

   Andi

[libdefaults]
permitted_enctypes = des-cbc-crc

in /etc/krb5.conf fixes the issue. DES seems to be outdated.

How can we make sure that the default squeeze encryption type is sane?
Reasign to the krb5-kdc package?

Best regards,

 Andi

Bug#656792: linux-image-3.2.0-1-amd64: kernel does not boot since 3.1 under a (strange) Xen anymore

2012-01-28 Thread Ian Campbell
The screenshots don't go back far enough to tell but perhaps the kernel
has detected Xen and has therefore "unplugged" the emulated devices to
allow it to safely use the PV drivers? If this has happened then you
will see messages like:
Xen Platform PCI: I/O protocol version ...
   ...
Blkfront and the Xen platform PCI driver have been compiled for this
kernel: unplug emulated disks.
very early on.

One way to tell would be to add "xen_emul_unplug=never" to your kernel
command line to prevent this happening and see if it boots with emulated
devices ok.

If this turns out to be the case then I would recommend arranging for
the initramfs to contain the xen blkfront driver and removing that
option again so you end up using the PV drivers (which are much fast
than emulated). This is normally already the case with the default
initramfs tools configuration.

Ian.

Bug#657802: nfs-kernel-server: NFSv4 kerberos mount stopped working after upgrade to 6.0.4 point release

2012-01-28 Thread Andreas B. Mundt
Package: nfs-kernel-server
Version: 1:1.2.2-4squeeze2
Severity: important

Hi,

after upgrading today to the 6.0.4 point release, kerberized NFSv4 mounting
ceased to work.
I assume this is related to the upgrade mentioned in the point release
anouncement:

nfs-utils   Allow negotiated enctypes to be limited;

The error message is:

mainserver rpc.svcgssd[9126]: ERROR: GSS-API: error in handle_nullreq:
gss_accept_sec_context(): Unspecified GSS failure. Minor code may provide more
information - Encryption type not permitted

I'll try to find out more and let you know, but perhaps you already have an
idea what went wrong.
The setup is a standard (squeeze) setup, details can be found here:
http://wiki.debian.org/DebianLAN

Best regards,

Andi

How new is newer?

There have been some interesting via-rhine fixes upstream recently, so
if you get a chance to try 3.3-rc1 or newer, that would be interesting.

(It works like this:

 1. Get tools:
apt-get install git build-essential

 2. Get a recent kernel:

git clone \
  git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/torvalds/linux.git
cd linux

Or, if you already have a git clone of the kernel:

cd linux
git fetch origin
git checkuot origin/master

 3. Configure it:

cp /boot/config-$(uname -r) .config; # stock configuration
make localmodconfig; # optional: minimize configuration

 4. Build and install it, test:

make deb-pkg; # optionally with -j for parallel build
dpkg -i ../
reboot
)

It was not accessible. This is what Nagios is for.
I don't have any serial console etc, so I don't know what is logged when my

Good to hear. Marking accordingly.

Could you also try a recent squeeze (2.6.32.y) kernel? It works
like this:

 1. Install 2.6.32-27 from http://snapshot.debian.org/, keeping all
other packages the same, and check if it still reproduces the
problem. (It might not, if X was involved.)

 2. If the problem is still reproducible, install a 2.6.32.y kernel
from squeeze (2.6.32-41 or newer) and see if that fixes it.

Thanks much,
Jonathan

Hi Jonathan,

Effectively newer kernels do not fix this issue (I'm using noapic again and it
seems it works fine).

I sent a message to the vger kernel list (under the subject "VIA-Rhine II
looses connectivity", 2011-11-20) but nobody answered.

Regards,
Antonio

I do and I'm running the latest sid kernel (3.2). I am able to
s2ram/s2disk without oopses, same for all the previous releases. Any
occasional issues seem to be related to the intel video driver (blank
screen, but able to SSH in, switch to console and CTRL+ALT+Delete to
reboot).

My wireless connection is partially broken since 3.1, but that's for
another bug, when I get round to filing it... ;-)

Are you saying it was not accessible for that time, or you don't know

I think it's the fault of dkms. The script /etc/kernel/prerm.d/dkms
needs to redirect stdout so that it is not sent to debconf.

It does matter if the kernel detects different devices due to
interacting with the hypervisor in a different way. That could mean
that a initramfs built while running Linux 3.0 has the wrong set of
drivers for later versions.

Can you try again, in case you remember wrongly?

I assume it is not possible for you to interact with the shell that the
initramfs runs after failing to mount the root filesystem?

It doesn't look like the return value (r8) is actually being set beyond
initialized to 0. If there is some ia64 instruction that modifies it, GCC
doesn't know about it from the inline assembly (r8 doesn't appear in the
inputs/outputs list). From looking at the x86 version (agh, inline asm is
hard to parse), it does modify the return value based on whether the
comparison was a success or not, and the return value is certainly used by
the callers.

Maybe it is created by depmod, dkms or whatever. But if you purge
linux-headers- the symlink will become broken and it is not
required if you remove both (image and headers) packages. It just
prevents dpkg to remove /lib/modules/ :(

If we don't create it, we shouldn't remove it.

This is unlikely as they are not tightly coupled.

I've created /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d/15-debugwait-hack.conf
containing that snippet.

The log shows:

It'll take a while to see whether that makes the problem go away.

I'll send a message the moment I see the problem again, or in a few days
if it seems fixed.

It is "dep", but that shouldn't matter here, should it?
Cause the detected modules are the same as in the (still booting) 3.0.x
kernel (I've compared the initramfs with lsinitramfs).
And if I remember correctly, I even tried it with =most, when I first
stumbled across this when 3.1 came out.

Bug#657302: [linux-2.6] Same thing happen here

2012-01-28 Thread flyingnu

Package: linux-2.6
Version: 3.2.1-2

--- Please enter the report below this line. ---

I can confirm this bug and that the regression was happened in linux 3.2.*.

Things that I observed:
- On pavucontrol I can see application's streams and the progress bar
that show current dB values of a playing stream is working.
- I can confirm that alsamixer now crash with a segmentation fault and
that few days before it never crashed. When i faced that regression i
use it so I'm sure that it's regression has happen after that bug.

- I can't hear sound even when i plug an headset on the audio jack
- But with an usb headset it work even on 3.2 kernel.
- Turning off pluseaudio (and obviously also changing alsa configuration
to made it work without pulseaudio) doesn't help.

I attach two files:
broken.kernel.alsa.log is alsa-info.sh executed on the 3.2.* kernel
good.kernel.alsa.log is alsa-info.sh executed on the 3.1.* kernel

Maybe there's a mismatch between the kernel modules and the userspace

Did you try the Debian kernel?

Also, who's the owner of the files in the server? root? Also, as what
UID are you mounting from the client? Did you try this as root? Could
you post output of ls -l from the client?

Bug#657734: file build.save is not removed on purging package

2012-01-28 Thread Patrick Matthäi
Package: linux-2.6
Version: 3.2.1-2
Severity: minor

Hello,

if you are building kernel modules on your own (or with dkms) the
symlink /lib/modules//build.save will be created with the
source /usr/src/
If you purge all related packages
(linux-{kbuild,image,headers}) the (now) broken symlink is not removed
and so on the whole folder /lib/modules/ will not be removed
(not empty dir).

So on purging the package (headers or image?) the build.save symlink
should be removed.

Re: Possible support for openvz also in the next version of stable

2012-01-28 Thread Ola Lundqvist
Hi Ben and Pavel

Thanks a lot. Then I think I know the way forward. We will create a
repository (either on debian.net or keep the one on openvz.org) and
put the kernels there. I will document this in the vzctl and vzquota
packages to give further instructions.

Pavel, do this sounds good to you.

Best regards,

// Ola

Ah, thanks. I should have noticed the attachment in the original
report.

Symptoms are reminiscent of , though
Vítor uses a 915GM and you have a 945GM. Also reminiscent of
.

Does putting

Section "Device"
Identifier "Intel"
Driver "intel"
Option "DebugWait" "true"
EndSection

in xorg.conf help?

Sorry for the slow reply. Can you reproduce this with a 3.x.y kernel?
If so, can you take a screenshot so we can see what the corrupted

Ok, will do this weekend - currently I'm on 3.3-rc something. Problem
still exists.
Here's an example - the "l" glyph has a little hole in it. This is
typical of the problem I see.

Linux carbon 3.3.0-rc1+ #4 SMP Sat Jan 21 15:46:40 CET 2012 i686 GNU/Linux

(That's 3.3.0-rc1 from git with my Sony VAIO keyboard patch).

This is mine:

/usr/src/linux192.168.1.2(rw,sync,no_subtree_check,no_root_squash)

Packages on the Squeeze server (kernel is custom there, as I said, works like
charm with 1.2.5-3 version
of sid's nfs-common package):

ii nfs-common 1:1.2.2-4
ii nfs-kernel-server 1:1.2.2-4
