Bug#692411: linux: fix for the ext4 corruption issue is in 3.6.6

2012-11-05 Thread Christoph Anton Mitterer
Source: linux
Version: 3.6.4-1~experimental.1
Severity: wishlist

Hi Ben, et all.

Yeah I know that ext4 corruption issue was a very exotic thingy...
but I guess everybody feels better if the patch for it is in Debian :)

So, while I expect that our kernel team was aware of this long before I was,
just in case:
3.6.6 and commit id ffb5387e85d528fb6d0d924abfa3fbf0fc484071
should contain the fix for it.

Thanks,
Chris.

Control: forwarded -1 https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=46557

For those who don't want to read the whole bug log: this bug is about
severe display corruption for those cursed with an Nvidia NV4E
(GeForce 6100/6150) graphics chip under two conditions:

- The machine has more than 2 Gigabyte RAM.
- A 64-bit kernel is used.

In this case, the machine is unusable with nouveau unless memory is
restricted to 2 Gigabyte (mem=2G) or acceleration is disabled
(nouveau.noaccel=1). For details, see the upstream bug on
https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=46557.

Cheers,

The warning does *not* mean that anything is broken in the floppy
driver. If the floppy driver does not work for you, that is a separate
bug.

After discussion with other kernel developers, I intend to remove the
deprecated behaviour and the warning in the next 3.2.y update.

It applies to 2.6.39 and later versions.

Bug#667501: Linux 2.6.39+: WARNING: floppy_disable_hlt() scheduled for removal in 2012

2012-11-05 Thread manuk7
Hi,

i'm affraid but i'm also concerned with this bug on a fresh Wheezy
installation (linux-image 3.2.0-4-686-pae). I'm just migrating from
Squeeze, where this floppy disk was working fine. In attachement is my
dmesg which is very similar to rpnpif's one.

This is IMO a serious regression for Wheezy release.

Btw I don't understand why this bug has been retitled as only applying
to 2.6 despite the submitter found it on 3.2.

Thanks,

Bug#692361: linux-image-3.6-trunk-amd64: ACPI display backlight brightness is set to zero at every boot-up

2012-11-05 Thread Stefan Nagy
Package: src:linux
Version: 3.6.4-1~experimental.1
Severity: normal
Tags: upstream

Dear Maintainer,

everytime I boot, my notebook's display stays black since kernel linux-
image-3.6-amd64. I'm using an external display most of the time and so I found
out that the backlight brightness in GNOME settings is set to zero – I can
solve the problem by increasing the screen brightness but at the next boot this
setting will be lost, screen brightness is set to zero again. Since my media-
keys to change screen brightness don't work for now (see bug #683777) I
wouldn't be able to change the setting without an external display. As
described in bug #681743, setting the kernel boot parameter
i915.invert_brightness=1 works fine as workaround.

I looked into /sys/class/backlight/acpi_video0/brightness to confirm that it's
set to zero and realized that I have two entries in backlight: 'acpi_video0'
(with brightness set to 0, actual_brightness is 0) and 'intel_backlight' (with
brightness set to 4882, actual_brightness is 0). When I increase screen
brightness to 100% in GNOME settings, the values change to: 'acpi_video0'
brightness & actual_brightness 10; 'intel_backlight' brightness &
actual_brightness 4882.

Since I didn't encounter this problem before linux-image-3.6-trunk-amd64 I had
a look at these settings on linux-image-3.2.0-4-amd64 with normal backlight
brightness: 'acpi_video0' (brightness 0, actual_brightness 0),
'intel_backlight' (brightness 4882, actual_brightness 4882). So the difference
between 3.2 and 3.6 seems to be that backlight brightness wasn't controlled by
the ACPI driver but the device specific driver in 3.2.

I tested this with vanilla kernel 3.6.4 and can confirm that this is an
upstream bug. I suppose this bug report is a duplicate of #681743 but since I'm
seeing this on another notebook (HP Folio 13-2000) than the original reporter
Jonathan Nieder asked me to open a new report.

Please tell me if you need more information.

I've just tried 3.7 RC 3. The assertion failure is gone and it doesn't

Hm, why do you say that is not how it should be? On the contrary,
that seems like exactly the expected result of disabling rc6, and
checking what happens in that configuration would be a good way of
ruling out power management modes as a cause of the freeze.
