We have been using compat_ for a while now to prefix a lot of our
symbols without clashes for the 32-64 compat stuff, but sure -- we can
use something else to help with any theoretical issues. Surprised
Debian of all distributions would frankly have been affected given
RHEL / SUSE didn't, but its OK, lets deal with it.

How about backport_ ? Patches coming up.

Bug#703485: linux-image-3.8-trunk-amd64: Battery not detected on Dell Latitude E5530

2013-03-20 Thread Jean-Christophe Dubacq
Package: src:linux
Version: 3.8.3-1~experimental.1
Severity: normal

Dear Maintainer,

While trying to resolve stability issues with the testing linux image,
I tried kernel 3.8 in experimental. I fully understand that this kernel
may not be used in production. However, when booting with this kernel,
the battery is not detected (and thus, laptop-detect thinks that it is
a desktop computer, which it is not). Of course, no /proc/acpi/BAT0 is
created, which makes system tools not work. I think the problem lies
in the kernel because of this.

The first significant difference that I see in the logs is:
-ACPI Error: [DCK9] Namespace lookup failure, AE_ALREADY_EXISTS
(20121018/dswload2-330)

while in 3.2 I get:

As this laptop is not used intensively right now, I am willing to do any tests
one knowledgeable may advice me to do.

Hi Ben,

As you can see in my bug report, I was using 3.2.40+ (your last longterm
release with this patch).

Bug#703506: GMA500: higher resolutions than 800x600 don't work

2013-03-20 Thread Georg Sassen

While the native resolution (1280x720) worked fine until kernel version
3.2.0.4-686-pae_3.2.35-2, I now only have 800x600 resolution in X11 and the

Bug#665000: Workaround for this bug

2013-03-20 Thread Thomas Goirand
Hi,

On one of my server, I had the issue as well. I'm not sure if it's the
exact same one, but at least I fixed it.

What happened for me was that my KVM over IP was printing "No signal"
just right after the login prompt (eg: the rest of the boot process
seemed to not be bothered). Then I did:

dpkg-reconfigure grub-pc

and added:

radeon.modeset=0

to the linux command line. After doing that, then I was able to see my
text mode login prompt (which is the only thing I care for a server, I
will never care about X support...).

Though, I am wondering if the issue isn't simply that the kernel is
trying to set a mode which is higher than what my KVM over IP can
support. How can I choose such mode (which would be a better fix)? Do
you know Ben, maybe?

Hoping that this will help anyone searching for a quick and easy fix,

Thomas

The conflict that just showed up in Debian involved the 'i2c_bit_algo'
symbol which had no symbol prefix in 'compat'. We updated the in-tree
DRM drivers from 3.4.32 and started exporting the symbol from
i2c-algo-bit itself.

I hadn't noticed that you already used the 'compat_' prefix for some
exported symbols and I'm not aware of any current conflict with the
32-bit compatibility layer, but it seems plausible that it could happen
in future.

Uploading linux (3.2.41-1)

2013-03-20 Thread Ben Hutchings
Since 3.2.39-2 went into testing, it's about time for another upload.
There are many important bug fixes pending (still more bugs to fix,
though; in particular some more DRM regressions showed up).

I'm intending to release 3.2.41 in a few minutes, and will try to
integrate this with the wheezy branch after that.

Current pending changes:

sudo mkdir -p /usr/share/syslinux/themes/debian/extlinux

Note that extlinux and syslinux packages are uptodate from bpo.

KMS drivers should honor modes specified with the video= boot parameter.
Optionally on a per-connector basis, e.g. "video=VGA-1:800x600".

Linux kernel packages just tells the installed boot loaders to do
whatever is necessary at installation time. A failure here is usually
not the fault of the kernel package, and certainly this file is nothing
to do with us.

Thanks for reporting. Can you reproduce this using
xserver-xorg-video-modesetting and the 3.8.y kernel from experimental
as well?

If so, please file a report upstream at bugzilla.kernel.org, product
Drivers, component Video(DRI - Intel) with the information described
at [1] and let us know the bug number so we can track it.

If not, we can try to find what patch fixed it and apply the same to
wheezy. So either result is progress.

This should use the gma500_gfx driver.

Hope that helps,

So far, I've had two more hangs under 3.7, but in general it was pretty
ok. 3.8 didn't hang in the short time I tried it, but it lost the
network card pretty soon after booting, spamming the kernel log with
lots of "atl1c :02:00.0: PCI-DMA: Out of IOMMU space for 1522 bytes"
(with different sizes). Google gives
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=918393 which indicates that
the just released kernel 3.8.4 includes a fix for that. I've also found
https://www.kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/projects/backports/stable/v3.8/ChangeLog-3.8-1
saying "2) PCI dma mapping errors in atl1c are not checked for and this
cause hard crashes for some users, from Xiong Huang." which seems to be
the cause of the broken network, and also might be a fix for the hangs
in 3.7.

Best regards,
Christian Ohm

Right, there was a change to atl1c in Linux 3.8 that causes it to leak
memory very quickly.

That was the change that caused this memory leak. I doubt that it has
anything to do with the bug you reported. Well, I'll upload 3.8.4 soon
and you can find out whether it is really fixed.

Soft lockup issues since upgrading to kernel 3.2.39-2 in Debian Testing

2013-03-20 Thread Adriano Vilela Barbosa
Hello everybody,

First of all, I don't know if this is the most appropriate place to
report this. If not, I apologize in advance. But I thought it would be
better to discuss this in some Debian mailing list instead of just
reporting a bug.

I'm running Debian Testing and, since upgrading from kernel 3.2.35-2
to kernel 3.2.39-2 a few days ago, I've been having some soft lockup
issues which bring my machine to an almost complete freeze (I'm still
able to access it through ssh). The kind of error messages I'm
getting (extracted from dmesg) are shown at the end of this email. If
this is in fact a good place to discuss this, please let me know what
kind of information I need to provide in order to help pinpoint what
the problem is. I can say, however, that to me the problem seems to
be related to Virtualbox: every time the problem happened was a little
after launching Virtualbox.

Thank you,

Adriano

Bug#703574: efivars can turn some Samsung systems into bricks

2013-03-20 Thread Ben Hutchings
Package: src:linux
Version: 3.2.39-2
Severity: critical
Tags: upstream fixed-upstream patch

EFI can store named variables in persistant storage (i.e. flash),
which is compacted at boot. On some Samsung systems (and maybe
others), compaction fails and the system will not boot if the
variable space is more than 50% full.

The workaround for this is:

commit 7feecf3f2b587e535550bb3e7bf75b2fee06fccf
Author: Josh Boyer
Date: Mon Mar 11 17:48:53 2013 -0400

efi: be more paranoid about available space when creating variables

which I backported into 3.2.41.

Ben.

Thank you for your comment.

In ARM ((but may be used on other architectures as well) ) all architectures,
flavor with the name of the CPU do is that it is multiplatform?
For example, armv7 flavor is multiplatform support in armhf.

I think this is a very simple rule.

Please report this upstream at bugzilla.kernel.org, product ACPI,
component Power-Battery, and let us know the bug number so we can
track it.

Be sure to include:

 - steps to reproduce the problem, expected result, actual result, and
how the difference indicates a bug (should be simple enough)

 - which kernel versions you have tested and what happened with each

 - full "dmesg" output from an affected and unaffected boot, as
   attachments

 - "acpidump" output, as an attachment

Hopefully the upstream developers may have ideas for further tracking
the problem down from that point.

Then if you'd like to track this down further before hearing back from
them, a good way can be to try versions halfway between the newest
known-good and oldest known-bad kernels from
, which can help narrow down
the search for the problematic patch.

Hope that helps,
Jonathan
