Re: Bug#712756: bnx2x: BCM57810 not working

2013-07-20 Thread Ulrich Hochholdinger
Hi,
I had the same problem n some Dell R720. The problem exists only with the
10GBase ethernet-interfaces. With GBIC-interfaces and some transceiver the
wheezy kernel works.
But you can use the kernel from wheezy backports, whichdoes not have this
problem with this hardware.

regards,
Ulli

Bug#701823: installation-report: Encrypted LVM assisted install failed on Lenovo T430s

2013-07-20 Thread Petter Reinholdtsen
Control: forcemerge -1 691427

I believe this is the same problem I experienced with my Thinkpad X230
with 180 GB Intel SSD disk with Lenovo firmware. As far as I can
tell, the disk model with the latest Lenovo firmware is broken, and
can't handle sustained writes without locking up and disappearing from
the SATA bus until you power cycle it. It can happen while writing
random data to the disk, but also when doing database operations or
writing other stuff to the disk. It affect Windows and Linux users
alike. If you never stress the disk, it will probably not fail you,
so you might avoid the problem.

See

for my story. I got a replacement disk of a different vendor/model.

Btw: Filling an SSD with random data to encrypt it is going to kill
performance and reduce the life time of the SSD. You might want to
reconsider and not fill it with random data even if you encrypt it.

linux 3.10.1 with initrd (was Re: linux 3.8.12-1 (atari flavour) does not boot)

2013-07-20 Thread Thorsten Glaser
Dixi quod…

>I guess if it’s like that, I can have a go as well.

Did one now, and it boots. It uses initrd now, which
means one has to copy-out the initrd every time it is
regenerated, but also adds flexibility (root filesystem
not ext4fs, root on nfs, nbd, etc).

I disabled quite a lot of stuff (like USB, WLAN) that
we could, in theory, have (with the NetUSBee or PCMCIA)
for now. Also, NTFS and Ceph and several network protocols.

My opinion here is: most are modules, but they also add
dependencies to the core kernel image, which we’d like
to keep smaller. We can always add back things later
that people miss in production.

I also threw out SELinux/AppArmor/TOMOYO/whatever support.

I’d like the m68k people to read the whole eMail and test
https://www.freewrt.org/~tg/dp/dists/hacks/dirty/Crossbuilt/linux/linux-image-3.10-0+m68k.1-m68k_3.10.1-1+m68k.1_m68k.deb
on all their boxen, at least Amiga/Atari/Macintosh
though the image also has BVME and MVME support
(no Sun3 or Q40 but that can easily be added ofc).

Also, I’d like the m68k people *and* the Debian Linux
kernel people to review the configuration, to see whether
there are things either can absolutely not live with:
https://www.freewrt.org/~tg/dp/dists/hacks/dirty/Crossbuilt/linux/config-3.10-0+m68k.1-m68k

>It’s probably a bit tricky getting it into the Debian

>from smaller fragments… I’ll read the kernel handbook
>in the hopes to find instructions there (for my own
>one-off testbuilds I just put full configs in, but

I did put the full configs in, for now. I’ve got no
idea how to reliably reduce them, and since I got rid
of all the kernel flavours it’s just a few KiB.

-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 3970373 Jul 20 17:10 /boot/initrd.img-3.10-0+m68k.1-m68k

Someone seems to have put “set -x” into the initrd,
but it boots fine:

root@ara3:~ # uname -a
Linux ara3.mirbsd.org 3.10-0+m68k.1-m68k #1 Debian 3.10.1-1+m68k.1 (2013-07-19)
m68k GNU/Linux
root@ara3:~ # lsmod
Module Size Used by
evdev 6613 0
ext3 96402 1
mbcache 3606 1 ext3
jbd29270 1 ext3

(This is ARAnyM, so the NatFeat disc/net/… drivers are
compiled in; the ide-core and SCSI stuff is put in modules.
By the way, this is MODULES=most; is there anything we’ll
need for MODULES=dep to work, considering we have modules
like ide-core (instead of libata) and HW specific drivers
that other platforms don’t? To reduce the initrd size.)

So good, so far. An ARAnyM log of the build (kernel
messages) is attached. There’s one thing sticking out:

[0.16] WARNING: at /root/linux-3.10.1/init/main.c:698
do_one_initcall+0x12e/0x13a()
[0.16] initcall param_sysfs_init+0x0/0x1a4 returned with disabled
interrupts

This seems to happen for several initcalls. Geert et al,
can you have a look at them, they’re scary ☺

For myself, I don't much care if non-release architectures have weird
configurations. But the configurations will still need to be written as
a list of overriding definitions, not a complete generated .config.

Right, but it’s still better if every Debian architecture
“feels” similar enough. I’m very much *not* knowledgeable
about Linux kernels other than 2.0.3x ;-) so I’d appreciate
feedback nevertheless, to keep the “feel” harmonised.

Yes, but how to do that? The file you referenced only says
in which order they’re concatenated, but I’ve got no idea
what overrides what, etc.

Did nobody script that yet? I can’t believe that.

(Anyway, it’ll still be a while until I have something
I can submit, so no need to hurry. But I’d like to be
steered back into the correct direction should I stray.)

I did install 3.10-1-686-pae a few minutes ago... and yes, still the

Seriously, what can I do to help tracking the issue down? I really can't
believe I may be the only one experiencing that issue as I could
reproduce it on another box.

So you should minimise the per-architecture and per-flavour
configuration.

The default order of precedence, ignoring featuresets, is:

debian/config/$deb_arch/config.$flavour[highest]
debian/config/$deb_arch/config
debian/config/kernelarch-$src_arch/config
debian/config/config [lowest]

Additional files can be included if there's a need to share overrides on
a different level, e.g. debian/config/armel/config-reduced

Can you try a git bisect between v3.2 and v3.3-rc6?

http://git-scm.com/book/en/Git-Tools-Debugging-with-Git#Binary-Search

This requires a git checkout of the upstream kernel sources... and a lot
of patience.

These enabled a single module before 3.10 (with INTEL_MEI_ME being a
bool), and no-one noticed the change.

There seem to be several different possible failure modes; here it fails
rather faster:

[0.484475] mei_me :00:16.0: setting latency timer to 64
[0.484508] mei_me :00:16.0: irq 42 for MSI/MSI-X
[0.509073] mei_me :00:16.0: wait hw ready failed. status = 0x0
[0.509133] mei_me :00:16.0: version message writet failed
[0.509184] mei_me :00:16.0: unexpected reset: dev_state = RESETTING
[0.537061] mei_me :00:16.0: wait hw ready failed. status = 0x0
[0.537115] mei_me :00:16.0: version message writet failed
[0.537165] mei_me :00:16.0: unexpected reset: dev_state = RESETTING

Changing it back to a module will still result in it being auto-loaded,
though you can at least blacklist it as a workaround.

I've added the N25Q128 IDs but didn't bother with the 256 Mbit part (not
needed for this system).

So this should be fixed in Debian 7.2.

I'd also hope that it doesn't get added to the initramfs, so the delay
can occur in parallel with the rest of booting.

You have to decide which of the differences between the root config and
your current config are actually important. No script can do that.

dists/trunk/scripts/kconfig.ml might be helpful though I've not used it
myself.
