I don't know.

As that went into 3.16.7-ckt3, it is therefore included in the current
packages in testing/unstable.

Is it possible to patch debian jessie's 3.16 kernel to add full support
 for this graphics card?

It would be much appreciated if I could return this laptop to the
 officially supported kernel.

This may be difficult, but you've helped a lot by finding the last
commit needed to make it work. Unfortunately this can't be
cherry-picked onto 3.16 by itself so we'll have to try to work out what
else it depends on.

Bug#778604: drm/i915 (N3530 integrated, ValleyView): X locks up when connecting external monitor - kernel: [drm:intel_dp_complete_link_train] *ERROR* failed to train DP, aborting

2015-02-17 Thread Danny B. Edel
Package: linux-image-3.16.0-4-amd64
Version: 3.16.7-ckt4-3

Note: This may be specific to the Acer version of the i915. lspci -nnk says

00:02.0 VGA compatible controller [0300]: Intel Corporation Atom
Processor Z36xxx/Z37xxx Series Graphics Display [8086:0f31] (rev 0e)
Subsystem: Acer Incorporated [ALI] Device [1025:0905]
Kernel driver in use: i915

The device is an Acer Aspire E15, also called E5-511-P7AT (on the
same sticker), it has an Intel N3530 Processor (Bay Trail), the
ValleyView graphics card is integrated.

Once I connect an external monitor via HDMI or VGA, the laptop screen
goes blank (backlight stays on though), and the login manager gets moved
to the external screen, but its just a copy of the last internal image,
duplicated to match the new screen's pixels. See the [screenshot] that I
uploaded to debian-user-german to get the idea.
The screen is frozen, neither mouse nor keyboard input works. If I say
CTRL+ALT+F1 (or submit chvt 1 via ssh) the laptop can be controlled
again (it will take up to 30 seconds to do the VT switch tho), and if I
issue service gdm restart with the HDMI cable disconnected, its usable
again.

A system log exempt, beginning when I plugged in the HDMI cable, is
attached.

Searching the internet showed similar issues, but it seems there are
multiple versions of this graphics card, so it maybe specific to the
[1025:0905] subsystem.

I tried various kernels, including old kernels from [snapshots] and some
new from [ubuntu].

The graphics card *worked* correctly in Ubuntu's 3.19, and failed both
in Debian's 3.16.7 (jessie default kernel) as well as a 3.18.6 I
downloaded from experimental. I recompiled a 3.19 myself from upstream
(with make deb-pkg) to verify it had nothing to do with ubuntu patches.

With this starting information I initiated a git [bisect], although I
had to add the [linux-stable] repository in addition to get the v3.18.y
tags.

The bisect log is attached. Please keep in mind when reading it that git
bisect always wants to find the first bad commit -- So git bisect
bad means the card *WORKS* and git bisect good means it's *BROKEN* --
and the first bad commit is the one that made it work.

Is it possible to patch debian jessie's 3.16 kernel to add full support
for this graphics card?

It would be much appreciated if I could return this laptop to the
officially supported kernel.

Thank you very much in advance for your time.
