Intel developers confirmed that there may be difference in how the hardware is connected between boards[1], and here is the bug report about that[2]. So indeed upstream linux-firmware may be incomplete about what it provides. I'll report when I know more. Package: src:linux Version: 3.16.3-2 Severity: normal Dear Maintainer, Ever since a recent upgrade, the kernel apparently instructs rfkill to block the wireless radio during boot. After google searching quite a bit, it seems this has been implemented to prevent laptops from broadcasting when on an airplane. Although this system uses a wireless NIC very commonly used in laptops, it is not a laptop. It is an Intel NUC. Many of the solutions on the web suggest simply pressing the wireless button on the laptop. There is no such button. Others suggest simply issuing an rfkill unblock command at the command line, but this is also not possible, because this is a headless unit with no wired Ethernet connections. It *MUST* come up with WiFi access at boot time. The best option would be to prevent the kernel from ever issuing the rfkill command at all. Barring that, I could write an init script (or modify an existing one) that re-enables the radio, but I am a little unsure of the exact details or where to insert such a script in the boot sequence. Typical of the behavior of this situation, the radio does come up for a few seconds during boot, but then shuts off. initramfs-tools 0.119 release
As I failed to send an announcement for 0.118, this announcement covers changes in both 0.118 and 0.119, the Wait smarter not harder release. Version 0.117 introduced mounting of /usr and fscking of both / and /usr. This resulted in numerous regressions as several other packages were not prepared for this (most notably sysvinit-core, upstart and klibc-utils). The worst regressions were fixed in 0.118. I believe the remainder are fixed in 0.119, or documented in NEWS so users can reconfigure if necessary. A initrd.img-3.2.0-4-amd64 file was generated at the same time the 3.10 one was crated and it boots normally. I don't know what the difference is. The problem is that the raid456 module is not being loaded by initramfs. I manually loaded the module with modprobe raid5, assembled by arrays with mdadm, and was able to boot normally. The initramfs file /conf/modules says dm-raid45, but I suspect it should say dm-raid456. I suspect this typo is causing the module to not be loaded, causing boot to fail, but I have not verified this yet. I have a mdadm array (ICH9R fakeraid BIOS array), where one of the partitions is a PV. On this PV, there is a LV for the root filesystem. Since ~ 2.6.37, the initramfs does not find the VG all the time. This means, I have to boot the system a couple of times, before the VG is found, and the root filesystem is mounted. There is no real logic in how often initramfs succesfully finds the VG. It's about a 1 in 3 chance of it booting succesfull. However, sometimes I have to reboot the system about 10 times before the VG is finally found. Sometimes it finds it immediatly. When in the shell for the initramfs, the RAID array seems to be assembled fine (this is also reported in the console output). Also, when executing a lvm vgdisplay, the VG is there. Once the VG is activated, the LV's can be mounted fine. The rootdelay option handling is slightly counterintuitive: in /scripts/init-top/udev we will sleep for $ROOTDELAY seconds if it is set, however if rootdelay= is not specified on the command line we will not sleep here, and boot will fail. in /scripts/local ROOTDELAY is set to a default of 30 seconds if rootdelay= is not set, but sleeping here does not help, as the LVM devices will not magically appear without vgchange being called, and that's not going to happen, because /scripts/local/top have been run at this point already. There are a few options of fixing it in the generic case: 1. Make scsi_mod.scan=sync the default. The implication of this are unclear to me. 2. Try to activate the volume groups at the end of the waiting-for-root time in /scripts/local. 3. Come up with some way of asynchronous notification of volume groups being available for activation, and invoke vgchange on this notification. I clearly don't know about how LVM works internally to accomplish something like this, an udev hook, perhaps? While the bug is fairly harmless and plenty of workarounds exist, I consider fixing it desirable, as it would case a boot failure on some systems immediately after installation, and figuring out what's going on may be a bit of a challenge for the user. I can't boot with the new kernel, I can however still boot with the old (3.2) kernel becaus I didn't remove it. I have multiple harddisks in my computer. On one of it, I have a normal partition, formated with ext4 for /boot which I use for booting. The other disk space is used for LVM as phisical disks in my volume group system. This volume group contains among others the logical volumes root and swap. The kernel is started with the argument: root=/dev/mapper/system-root This configuration (still) works with the 3.2 kernel. When I'm booting the 3.9 kernel, I get the following messages: Booting kernel Loading, please wait... Volume group system not found Skipping volume group system Unable to find LVM volume system/root ... Unable to find LVM volume system/swap After a timeout, I get a busybox shell. The commands lvm vgs and lvm lvs do show there the correct information. The directory /dev/mapper shows however only the entry control. Can it be that a module isn't loaded? But how can then the LVM be found in the busybox shell? Also got a bit confused as I saw systemd running from the ramdisk and I have not yet installed systemd. I was trying to just restart the boot with exec init but that did not work.
