While turning to paravirtualized serial, I realized that the char/virtio_console kernel module is missing in the netinst's initrd, and this driver is required very early. Obviously I still use the UART emulation for kernel messages since it's the only _very early_ output medium, thus emulated UART and paravirtualized serials should be used together. If this module makes it to netinst's initrd, one would use those kvm args: -chardev file,path=virtiocon0.log,id=virtiocon0 -device virtio-serial -device virtconsole,chardev=virtiocon0 ... and in the guest a /dev/hvc0 would appear. Anything the guest would write to /dev/hv0 would en up in the host's vitriocon0.log file. -- System Information: Debian Release: 9.4 APT prefers stable-updates APT policy: (500, 'stable-updates'), (500, 'stable') Architecture: amd64 (x86_64) Kernel: Linux 4.16.0-0.bpo.2-amd64 (SMP w/4 CPU cores) Locale: LANG=en_GB.UTF-8, LC_CTYPE=en_GB.UTF-8 (charmap=UTF-8), LANGUAGE=en_US:en (charmap=UTF-8) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/dash Init: systemd (via /run/systemd/system) debian-installer-9-netboot-amd64 depends on no packages. debian-installer-9-netboot-amd64 recommends no packages. For historical reasons the source for these is included in the kernel tree and we include the tools in linux-image packages. The upstream build system always builds the tools as native code, since they can optionally be used at build time. As a result, a cross-build puts wrong-architecture executables into the linux-image packages. dh_strip treats this as a fatal error (quite reasonably) and the build fails. We should build the tools again using the proper compiler. We could also move them into a separate package - this would reduce code duplication between different kernel flavours, and would allow cross-building kernel packages without libc-dev for the target architecture. Bug#898267: [firmware-misc-nonfree] Missing firmware i915/kbl_dmc_ver1_04.bin
Hi all Almost two month past since the last message, and still don't have a new release of this package, it's a shame since QA informs there is 20 commits since the tag debian/20170823-1. I cannot found any new release in the Tracker. Please consider that many people use Testing, or Stable Backports, and may require this package in sync with the released Kernel, and their bug reports will result in a better Buster release. Thanks!!

Bug#883294: Problem appears to be solved on 4.16.0-2-amd64
First apologies again for delayed answers. I am running testing which is up to date. On kernel 4.16.0-2-amd64, with command line /boot/vmlinuz-4.16.0-2-amd64 root=UUID=43ae47ae-86fc-43a6-9661-dcf030179dc0 ro tsc=unstable init=/lib/sysvinit/init the problem seems to be resolved. I would close this bug, but it seems as if others may be seeing something similar, so I leave it to the maintainers to decide whether to leave it open. ael
