Bug#405270: machine hangs after loading ipw3945d
Hi there, I just wanted to check whether you had better luck using ipw3945/ipw3945d with newer versions of the kernel and/or driver. Does the daemon still hang when kill switch is on? Yes - I'm sorry but I must report that the deamon still hangs with the kill switch turned on. I just tested with linux-image-2.6.18-4-686 (2.6.18.dfsg.1-10), ipw3945-modules-2.6.18-4-686 (2.6.18+1.1.3-4) and ipw3945d (1.7.22-3). Thanks for keeping an eye upon this issue! Bug#405270: machine hangs after loading ipw3945d
Hi there, version 1.1.3 of ipw3945 was uploaded to unstable in the last days, if you're 'still' using the old one, please upgrade and try again. if not, are you using 2.6.18 or someting newer? I already upgraded to 1.1.3 before reporting. Here is the list of installed package versions: ii firmware-ipw3945 0.3Binary firmware for IPW3945 ii ipw3945-modules-2.6.18-3-686 2.6.18+1.1.3-3 Intel PRO/Wireless 3945ABG (ipw3945) driver ii ipw3945-source 1.1.3-2Source for the Intel PRO/Wireless 3945ABG (i ii ipw3945d 1.7.22-3 Binary userspace regulatory daemon for Intel Yes, there is kernel 2.8.16 running on my laptop: Linux orthanc 2.6.18-3-686 #1 SMP Sun Dec 10 19:37:06 UTC 2006 i686 GNU/Linux indepentent of that, the solved softlock thing was not kill-switch related but to newer kernel versions than 2.6.18. I see, maybe I should wait for 2.6.19 appearing in Sid. ;) with a previous version of the regulatory daemon end of the summer, i had some similar issues as you described them with the kill switch too on my x60. additionally, when switching the kill-switch rapidly on and off while doing a network restart, the whole machine occasionally freezed. both phenomenons are, funnily, no longer occuring with ipw3945d of current sid. Strange, beacuse I'm running the actual package which is available in Sid. Regards, Michael -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Bug#405270: machine hangs after loading ipw3945d
Jurij, The problems you're experiencing sound suspiciously similar to the Debian's bug #405109 [0], aka upstream bug #1096 [1]. It should be fixed in the latest version of the ipw3945 driver, I'm CC'ing the maintainer to see if he might have any insights. [0] http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=405109 [1] http://bughost.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=1096 Even if I don't see any soft lockup messages on the console or in my syslog/bootlog I agree with you that waiting for the next driver/daemon release is a good idea. :) Thanks, Michael -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#405270: AW: machine hangs after loading ipw3945d
Jurij, after changing the sleeptime for up to 30 seconds I must say that it doesn't work for me either. The /etc/init.d/ipw3945d script exits normally (return code 0) but the script (/etc/init.d/networking) refuses to continue. It is most likely some timing issue, please try increasing the delay after the daemon is started by looking for a line 'sleep 3' in /etc/init.d/ipw3945d and changing the number (delay in seconds) to something larger to see if it helps. Bug#343048: linux-image-2.6.14-2-686: ide fails to initialize, fails to boot
Updated today to linux-image-2.6.14-2-686 2.6.14-6 and it booted without problems. DMA working and everything aparently back to normality. Same over here. Upgrading the Kernel without a modified /etc/yaird/Default.cfg leads to a properly running system. Even after the latest yaird update (0.0.12-2) and another dpkg-reconfigure linux-image-2.6.14-2-686 everything runs fine. Thanks a lot! Bug#343048: linux-image-2.6.14-2-686: no need to install initramfs-tools (but piix not loaded)
Yes, I added it to the title after finding out :). Michael Setzer wrote, that adding MODULE ide-generic MODULE ide-disk to /etc/yaird/Default.cfg makes it work. I could boot with that, but DMA was disabled. I found out that manually adding piix reenables DMA for me, so I meant yes it works, no need to install initramfs-tools, but piix is not loaded and that disables my DMA. What about addign only piix, and not the others ? Will this work ? Unfortunately I do not have time to reboot and test that right now but yaird output looks promising, thanks for the hint Sven: Now I gave it another try and added MODULE piix MODULE ide-generic MODULE ide-disk to the /etc/yaird/Default.cfg. After reconfiguring the linux-image-2.6.14-2-686 and rebooting I have DMA reenabled. Using only MODULE piix in the /etc/yaird/Default.cfg results in an unbootable system. Too bad that this machine is not accessible to me right now, so my testing time is over for now. :) Regards, Michael -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Here is some information: [I] [EMAIL PROTECTED] saruman $ uname -a Linux rivendell 2.6.8-1-686 #1 Tue Sep 14 00:22:58 EDT 2004 i686 GNU/Linux [I] [EMAIL PROTECTED] saruman $ ls -l /lib/libc.so.6 lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 13 Sep 13 08:46 /lib/libc.so.6 - libc-2.3.2.so Running top I can see, that the system always has a load around 2.5 on my Pentium III, the X-Server always needs 30% of CPU time: top - 15:20:24 up 7:13, 2 users, load average: 2.01, 1.95, 1.73 Tasks: 103 total, 1 running, 102 sleeping, 0 stopped, 0 zombie Cpu(s): 69.3% us, 11.5% sy, 0.0% ni, 18.9% id, 0.0% wa, 0.3% hi, 0.0% si Mem:256756k total, 228868k used,27888k free,16872k buffers Swap: 514072k total, 139892k used, 374180k free,83484k cached PID USER PR NI VIRT RES SHR S %CPU %MEMTIME+ COMMAND 2660 root 15 0 37624 17m 14m S 40.7 7.1 80:50.45 XFree86 2832 saruman 15 0 37328 12m 32m S 11.9 5.2 35:47.24 kdeinit 2941 saruman 15 0 60604 22m 35m S 10.8 8.8 13:13.38 kopete 4262 saruman 15 0 27336 10m 24m S 2.9 4.1 0:36.28 kdeinit 4961 saruman 17 0 2096 1080 1876 R 2.0 0.4 0:01.63 top 2815 saruman 15 0 25036 9948 22m S 1.7 3.9 1:43.15 kdeinit 2830 saruman 15 0 26424 9.8m 23m S 1.2 3.9 0:43.24 kdeinit 2875 saruman 15 0 115m 39m 53m S 0.9 15.9 20:28.12 kontact 2190 root 15 0 2112 716 1780 S 0.3 0.3 0:00.26 dhclient3 2726 saruman 15 0 29284 12m 25m S 0.3 5.0 1:54.74 kdeinit 2738 saruman 15 0 32344 9764 29m S 0.3 3.8 0:48.86 kdeinit 2780 saruman 16 0 22428 7448 20m S 0.3 2.9 0:02.61 kdeinit 2829 saruman 15 0 22692 7604 20m S 0.3 3.0 0:18.26 kdeinit 2837 saruman 16 0 2172 756 1876 S 0.3 0.3 0:55.66 ksysguardd 2841 saruman 15 0 24244 9096 21m S 0.3 3.5 0:34.42 kdeinit 2854 saruman 15 0 27012 9924 24m S 0.3 3.9 0:58.01 kdeinit 2859 saruman 16 0 27420 10m 24m S 0.3 4.2 0:18.74 korgac [I] [EMAIL PROTECTED] saruman $ cat /proc/cpuinfo processor : 0 vendor_id : GenuineIntel cpu family : 6 model : 8 model name : Pentium III (Coppermine) stepping: 3 cpu MHz : 202.989 cache size : 256 KB fdiv_bug: no hlt_bug : no f00f_bug: no coma_bug: no fpu : yes fpu_exception : yes cpuid level : 2 wp : yes flags : fpu vme de pse tsc msr pae mce cx8 sep mtrr pge mca cmov pat pse36 mmx fxsr sse bogomips: 362.49 [I] [EMAIL PROTECTED] saruman $ cat /proc/meminfo MemTotal: 256756 kB MemFree: 27868 kB Buffers: 17504 kB Cached: 83600 kB SwapCached: 54500 kB Active: 171464 kB Inactive:19100 kB HighTotal: 0 kB HighFree:0 kB LowTotal: 256756 kB LowFree: 27868 kB SwapTotal: 514072 kB SwapFree: 374184 kB Dirty: 72 kB Writeback: 0 kB Mapped: 133092 kB Slab:30284 kB Committed_AS: 268656 kB PageTables: 1848 kB VmallocTotal: 770040 kB VmallocUsed: 7980 kB VmallocChunk: 761764 kB I know that my memory is almost full, but even when the system has been booted the machine reacts still slow. I didn't have that behaviour wit the 2.6.8-2 kernel image. Regards, Michael
