trunk kernel?

2011-01-06 Thread Nima Azarbayjany

Hi,

Can someone explain to me what is a trunk kernel? Are they safe to
install? I would like to have the newly added 2.6.37 kernel in
experimental in my Squeeze box. Is that a wise thing to do? Are there
any risks involved?

Thanks.

Nima

popping laptop speakers

2010-01-26 Thread Nima Azarbayjany

Hi there,

I've got an annoying problem with my laptop which is a Pavilion dv5. I
have the latest kernel 2.6.32.

The problem is that at reboot the speakers make a loud noise which I
fear may damage hardware. This problem existed with somewhat older
kernels and it was worse. There used to be sounds generated also at
suspend. I don't know whether this should be reported as a bug and if
so where it should go. I thought here is the most relevant place so I
posted to this list. I have attached the output of lspci and lsmod to
this email but I don't know how to get you more data (such as probably
logs). I know this is not enough. So please help me.

These threads show that already so many people are having such a problem:

console resolution

2010-01-20 Thread Nima Azarbayjany

Hi all,

I used to use vga=xxx on the kernel parameters line in etch and in lenny
to set the console resolution. I used to add it to

#defopts= ...

line in Grub's menu.lst and then update-grub. Now I have installed
squeeze and can't figure out how to do it. What is the equivalent of
vga=xxx in Grub 2?

Thanks.

Nima

console resolution

2010-01-20 Thread Nima Azarbayjany
Okay. But the problem really does not seem to be Grub. It's I think
the kernel which is refusing the vga=xxx option. It seems to have been
replaced by something else. A message is printed but it disapears so
fast that I can't see it.

installing kernel snapshots...

2009-04-22 Thread Nima Azarbayjany
Hi all,

In order to get my Intel wireless card working on my laptop I am thinking of
installing a 2.6.27 or newer kernel. I want to know how safe is it to
install a new kernel? Do they have any potential of damaging the hardware?
I will need to go through the steps listed in
http://wiki.debian.org/iwlagnif I want to install the new kernel and
configure the wireless card.

Thanks,
Nima

hibernation with new kernels

2009-02-17 Thread Nima Azarbayjany
Hi all,

I have a Dell Inspiron E1505 laptop with Debian Lenny installed on it. I
have regularly installed the updates. I had no problem with hibernation
until the latest kernel updates were installed. It works, but much slower
than before. While hibernating/resuming, the screen goes completely
blank except for the cursor at the top left corner of the screen. And
sometime during resume my laptop makes some noise which is weird and
irritating. Can anyone tell me what can I do to remove that noise and
have faster hibernation/resumes like before?

Thanks for you help.

Nima
