I believe it is an ide-generic / piix bug, which initramfs-tools works around,
and yaird tries to work around but fails. I don't believe the workaround is
the right solution though, so i think it would be best if you just cloned this
bug report ans reassigned it to yaird.

I have the same problem. When piix is loaded as a module, I am unable to 
mess with DMA settings. However, when I compile piix statically, I can 
set DMA without a hitch. This issue has been discussed on debian-user, 
and I believe it is a kernel bug, but I feel more comfortable reporting 
bugs here (and I don't know how to report a kernel bug). Here's the

try to use initramfs-tools?
dma should work out of the box.
