Bug#356090: kernel: Can't access PCMCIA card adapter

2006-03-09 Thread Bill Wohler
Package: kernel
Severity: normal

I got a new Dazzle 4 in 1 card adapter for my ThinkPad. Using the
workaround mentioned in Bug #350235, it worked fine for a SmartMedia
card. However, when I insert a 1 GB SD card, I get a continuous stream
of errors until there was an I/O error, followed by what looks like an
oops when I remove the card. When I reinstall the card, the entire
system hangs and needs to be power cycled.

Other unusual things I observed when the device was inserted was this:

  10650 ?D 0:00 /usr/lib/hal/hald-probe-volume

This process went away when I got the I/O error below, just before I
removed the device.

I then tried to mount the device. It triggered the same avalanche of
errors which also ended with the I/O error. Interestingly, the mount
succeeded and I was able to read and write to the disk. I've appended
another set of log messages that were generated during a write of 67 MB;
when I later performed a cmp, one of the files was indeed corrupted. I
was able to re-copy the file and the copy was fine.

I also happened across a review at Amazon where someone said that this
particular device suffered a lot of errors. Is it possible that this
device is problematic, or do you think we're both seeing driver errors?

Here are the log messages. Please let me know if I can provide more
information.

Bug#356090: kernel: Can't access PCMCIA card adapter

2006-03-09 Thread Bill Wohler
Here's a couple more data points. I inserted a smaller, 32 MB SD card
without error. The 1 GB card I used, works without error in an external
USB memory card reader.

So there seems to be a problem out past a GB in either the Dazzle 4 in 1
Card Adapter itself or in the driver. Thoughts as to which one?

I have to report the exact same bug than Bill.

Kernel 2.6.17.6

I used to have a 1G SD card that worked fine

I upgraded to a 2G card, and I get this:

If I remove the card, my machine hangs hard.

It is possible that my 1GB card was really 0.99GB or something.
It also works with a 512MB card of the same brand than the 2GB card.

Has anyone found any info on how to handle this problem?

Thanks
Marc

Same problem on my PowerBook G4, with both a 2-GB SD card and a 1-GB SD

BTW, I had no problem with the same PCMCIA adapter + 1-GB SD card with
Linux kernel 2.6.6 in July 2004.

It fails to find a sector which is within the reported size.

Well, there's no problem with the camera. And there's no problem when
I read the 1-GB card on my Zaurus. (I haven't tried the 2-GB card on
my Zaurus since there's a known bug in the driver for SD cards > 1 GB,
and some users had to reflash.)

I've tried with another 1-GB card, a microSD this time (with a microSD
to SD adapter between the PCMCIA adapter and the memory card), and I get
the following errors:

I could mount it without any problem:

2008-09-21 Thread Vincent Lefevre
There's something wrong with one of the drivers:

Same number of sectors, but not the same number of MB's!
Or perhaps they're rounding the value 1015.808 inconsistently.

Does this still occur with later kernel versions?

Cheers,
Moritz

I don't know. FYI, in my case, this is an old machine (2001), which
I won't use any longer in a few weeks. If you want, I could try.
Otherwise I wouldn't mind if this bug were closed (but I can't
speak for the other users who had the same problem).
