Bug#560719: linux-image-2.6.30-2-amd64: kernel panics with cannot open /root/dev/console

I got a workaround for that problem with kernel 2.6.30 by introducing a 5
second ROOTDELAY in
/usr/share/initramfs-tools/scripts/local and rebuilding initramfs.

 The 2.6.32 kernel is available from packages.debian.org and can
 be installed in both Debian stable, testing and unstable
 installations.
Unfortunately 2.6.32 kernel crashes utterly shortly after starting a KDE4.x
session. I filed a bug report for this problem (#568625)

Apparently Fedora suffered from a similar crash with Intel onboard graphics
which is supposedly fixed in 2.6.33, but I have not yet tried this kernel.

Thanks,
Frank

Hi,
The next release of Debian (6.0, code name Squeeze) will be based
on 2.6.32. Please test the current 2.6.32 from unstable/testing and tell
us whether the problem persists. If so, we should report it upstream
to the kernel.org developers.

The 2.6.32 kernel is available from packages.debian.org and can
be installed in both Debian stable, testing and unstable
installations.

Thanks,
Moritz

Bug#560719: linux-image-2.6.30-2-amd64: kernel panics with cannot open /root/dev/console

2009-12-11 Thread frank
Package: linux-image-2.6.30-2-amd64
Version: 2.6.30-8squeeze1
Severity: normal

Debian Squeeze amd64:

The system does not boot at all, if the following menu entry from grub.cfg is
used:

menuentry Debian GNU/Linux, Linux 2.6.30-2-amd64 {
insmod ext2
set root=(hd0,1)
search --no-floppy --fs-uuid --set aa7cc9cc-7acb-4fdd-9c9a-f77824d8f8b3
linux   /vmlinuz-2.6.30-2-amd64
root=UUID=5bf94eae-110c-4a54-8e69-4aa26ab92565 ro quiet
initrd  /initrd.img-2.6.30-2-amd64
}

Using:

menuentry Debian GNU/Linux, Linux 2.6.30-2-amd64 (recovery mode) {
insmod ext2
set root=(hd0,1)
search --no-floppy --fs-uuid --set aa7cc9cc-7acb-4fdd-9c9a-f77824d8f8b3
linux   /vmlinuz-2.6.30-2-amd64
root=UUID=5bf94eae-110c-4a54-8e69-4aa26ab92565 ro single
initrd  /initrd.img-2.6.30-2-amd64
}

the system boots in about 3 out of 4 cases.

The message left on the screen at the moment of the kernel panic is:

kill: 18: no such process
/init: 253: cannot open /root/dev/console: no such file

My hardware consists of a Core2 Quad Q8200 CPU, 4GB RAM and a main board with
an Intel G43 chipset.
