The latter question was based on it on the assumption that it was fixed on
5.10.x, but as you're unsure, let's keep it open.

Yes to the former, unsure to the latter.

If you’d rather not, I can keep a note on my TODO for when the
other system is back up, then reproduce and either unarchive or
let it rest, as I don’t have a timeframe for that.

So it was present on 5.9.0-2 (5.9.6-1), but no longer on 5.10.X?

Do you want to keep the bug open for your other/original system?

Good question. The system currently suffers from fan error and
I don’t have the tuits to repair it, so I switched to a different
X61 Thinkpad, for now.

Perhaps. On this different Thinkpad, I’m running bullseye and
don’t get the messages. iwl-related dmesg entries:

Is this issue still happening?
The firmware file iwlwifi-4965-2.ucode hasn't been updated since 2009-07-09,
but maybe/hopefully the kernel deals better with it now?

2021-05-02 Thread Ari Fordsham
I'm also having this issue.

LG Gram 17 2019
Intel Wireless-AC 9560

Running testing (Debian GNU/Linux bullseye/sid)

Under the current kernel (linux-image-5.10.0-6-amd64) the Wifi was bugging
out constantly, making it almost unusable. (No ethernet port on the
machine!)

I tried all versions of the firmware (by renaming the files in
/lib/firmware/iwlwifi-9000-*) none were noticeably better.

I downgraded to linux-image-4.19.0-16-amd64 (firmware v38), and thought it
was solved, but it's still happening intermittently.

Can you perhaps try the current version as well? There's been one additional
change to iwlwifi firmwares since then:
https://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/firmware/linux-firmware.git/commit/?id=40e4162adfc91390f6fbbd8269f9439832af1dde

(I haven't tested either, I just downgraded to 20190502-1. Don't have the
mental budget to deal with another broken thing now.)

On my system, the problem last appeared on Sep. 17 (with a Debian
kernel version 5.2.9-2). Since then, I have not seen any "Microcode SW"
errors. I've been running 4.19.72 (self-built), 5.2.17-1, 5.3.7-1,
5.3.9 (-1, -2, -3), and 5.3.15-1 (Debian).

~# journalctl -S 2019-06-01 | grep "Linux ver\|Microcode SW"

Bug#934781: firmware-iwlwifi: iwl4965: Microcode SW error detected

2019-12-12 Thread Andrew Bettison
As an experiment, I downloaded the tarball from
https://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/firmware/linux-firmware.git/tag/?h=20190815
(as recommended in
https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=939262 ), and manually
copied its intel/* and iwlwifi-* files into /lib/firmware (overwriting
the ones installed by the firmware-iwlwifi package).

After rebooting kernel 5.3.0-2 (amd64) I still get "iwlwifi: Microcode
SW error" messages accompanied by "ieee80211 phy0: Hardware restart was
requested" during periods of high Wi-Fi throughput, but they do not
cause the Wi-Fi to hang.  So the newer firmware appears to rectify the
worst part of the problem (Wi-Fi freeze) but does not fully resolve the
problem.

Bug#934781: firmware-iwlwifi: iwl4965: Microcode SW error detected

2019-09-08 Thread Celejar
Package: firmware-iwlwifi
Version: 20190717-2
Followup-For: Bug #934781

I did some further digging - in my case, at least, the problem seems to
be triggered by some relatively recent kernel change. I combed through
the system journal for the last few months, and the problem first starts
appearing in the logs a few days after I began running kernel 5.2.x
(from 5.2.7 through 5.2.9). Previously, while running 4.19.x, the
problem never appears.

I haven't done a bisection, but it seems pretty clear at this point that
there's a microcode bug that has begun to be triggered by something in
newer kernels.

Hi,

I'm also seeing Microcode SW errors on my Sid system (see attached). I'm
not sure when they started, but I do look at my logs fairly often, and
I've never noticed them before. Sometimes performance is not affected,
but sometimes I see throughput drop from about 240-260 Mbps to about
30-40 Mbps.

I'm experiencing a similar problem with 8265 and kernel 5.2.7 -- I got the
microcode sw error today, and my wifi has been reconnecting very often lately.
And I even got a "kernel: list_del corruption", which may be unrelated, but
all the reconnecting probably makes it easier to trigger. Anyway...

It seems we're not alone at all:
