Eating properly can become an issue for seniors, particularly those who find
themselves living alone. While caloric needs decline, a balanced diet is still
necessary to decrease the chance of obesity, cancer, cataracts, osteoporosis,
stroke, heart disease or joint disorders.
A diet rich in complex carbohydrates, omega-3 fatty acids, nutrients, such as
fiber and calcium, as well as vitamins D and B12 is an excellent start. Not
only will fiber lower your cholesterol, reducing the risk of both stroke and
heart disease, but it will also prevent diverticulitis, among other things.
Calcium and vitamin D have also been shown to improve and maintain bone health,
therefore limiting the risk of fractures.
