Package: lintian
Version: 2.5.52
Severity: minor

Since a recent decision of the technical comity, the nodejs package is
providing /usr/bin/node, while still providing /usr/bin/nodejs during a
transition period.

It would be nice if lintian could recognize this new interpreter name as
being correct ; for now I get :

W: node-regjsparser: unusual-interpreter
usr/lib/nodejs/regjsparser/bin/parser #!node

for a package I'm preparing.

Thanks,

Snark on #debian-js

Maybe it's just the kind of software that i maintain, but i've been
seeing a lot of "spelling-error-in-binary" and
"spelling-error-in-manpage" lintiain informational statuses that
suggest "CAs" should be "Case".

This isn't the case (ha ha) for cryptographic tools which deal with
Certificate Authorities, which are often known as CAs.

The crude fix is to just remove this check entirely, but that would be
a shame because i'm sure "case" is actually sometimes misspelled as
"cas".

The more subtle fix would be to accept that this particular
capitalization ("CAs") is OK, but any other capitalization is not, and
is likely supposed to be "case". However, i don't understand the
lintian check_spelling code well enough to know how to implement that
fix.

So my proposed middlebrow fix (see patch below) is to consider any
case of "cas" other than "CAs" to be a misspelling of "CAs", rather
than a misspelling of "case". If someone cleverer than me can propose
a more nuanced fix, i'd be even happier.

There seem to be more of them:

https://bugs.debian.org/872699 for which I send out a -done mail just
now, too. (Just noticed: This was even fixed in 2.5.51, not 2.5.53 as
I first assumed. All lintian releases around that time seem to have
huge changelog entries and tons of changes. Will fix it.)

https://bugs.debian.org/871008 which seems to be fixed since 2.5.52
according to the changelog.

https://bugs.debian.org/871791 which seems to be fixed since 2.5.52
according to the changelog.

Similar cases?

Package: lintian
Version: 2.5.52
Severity: minor

Since a recent decision of the technical comity, the nodejs package is
providing /usr/bin/node, while still providing /usr/bin/nodejs during a
transition period.

It would be nice if lintian could recognize this new interpreter name as
being correct ; for now I get :

W: node-regjsparser: unusual-interpreter
usr/lib/nodejs/regjsparser/bin/parser #!node

for a package I'm preparing.

Thanks,

This has been implemented in Lintian 2.5.53 (and is still present in
the current code), but the bug report has never been closed for
reasons not obvious to me. Maybe a lost mail or so.

Here's the full changelog entry from Lintian 2.5.53:

Bug#880140: lintian: misdetects libcanberra-gstreamer as a GNU Smalltalk library

2017-10-29 Thread Simon McVittie
Package: lintian
Version: 2.5.56
Severity: normal
Tags: patch

lintian reports that libcanberra-gstreamer has
"wrong-section-according-to-package-name libcanberra-gstreamer => interpreters".
This appears to be because it matches ^lib.*-gst which is thought to be
a GNU Smalltalk binding.

I think the regex should be anchored to the end (add $), since TCL,
Lua and GNU Smalltalk libraries seem to follow the same naming pattern
as Perl. Untested patch which I hope will DTRT:

Dear Maintainers,

Please stop warning about jquery.js as embedded by Doxygen. I evaluated
all options at fixing this issue in Doxygen and conclude that a fix is
infeasible and its usefulness is limited. The issue and the problems
about fixing it are documented in /usr/share/doc/doxygen/README.jquery
(in the doxygen package >= jessie). Even if there were a security issue
in jquery, it will likely not affect any user via Doxygen.

For detection I suggest to look for doxygen.png and doxygen.css. If both
are present, the jquery warning should be suppressed.

Note that some maintainers have started replacing jquery.js in response
to the lintian tag. Unfortunately what is named jquery.js does not only
contain jquery. Thus some generated documentation is now broken. I would
like lintian to error out if jquery.js of Doxygen-generated
documentation is a symbolic link to the jquery package. Do you need a
separate bug number for this?

Thanks

Helmut

Hi,

Lintian is unreliable at handling signals. This causes it to fail to
clean up in some cases on lindsay.d.o (and other archive-wide runs).

Example from the log file:

"""

This log suggests that lintian continued despite having received a
signal. Furthermore, there is a left over temporarily lab on
lindsay.d.o having a timestamp close to start of the lintian run:

"""
$ ls -ld /srv/lintian.debian.org/scratch/temp-lintian-lab-rCsPnScQ8t
drwx-- 4 lintian lintian 4096 Oct 14 03:34
/srv/lintian.debian.org/scratch/temp-lintian-lab-rCsPnScQ8t
"""

My /guess/ is that when lintian received the first signal, the signal
handler then disabled itself and threw a "Interrupted" error.
Something then catches the error and flags the check / package as
"uncheckable" but continues on. When the second signal arrived, the
default signal handler terminated with lintian not cleaning up after
itself.

Thanks,
~Niels

Thanks for your quick reply.

Yes, this makes sense.

This issue was spotted after attempting to translate descriptions of binutils
*-dbg
packages by using DDTSS.
Packages with empty extended description are not handled properly by DDTSS and
fetching them causes some troubles (translation interface is quite broken). For
reference, see [1] and [2] (login required).
Maybe the assumption that packages with empty long description would never reach
the archive was made.

I clone&reassign this bug so that @l10n-devel folks will be informed about this
problem.

> Not at all! Well spotted - please keep looking for other problems :)

I will do it (after digging more in deep before opening something else :) ).

Thanks again!
