Hi,

If your watch file options contain escaped double quotes as in the
attached example, Lintian incorrectly emits warnings for
debian-watch-may-check-gpg-signature and debian-watch-could-verify-download.
I have attached a patch which fixes it.

Best regards,

Carlos

Package: lintian
Version: 2.5.66
Severity: wishlist

Hi,

Please consider adding a check for packages that (at the moment) must
definitely be needing Rules-Requires-Root != no.  A lower-bound on
this would be:

Any _source_ building at least one _binary_ package containing at
least one path with ownership different from "root:root".

This check should be at most a wishlist tag and would assist us in
telling how far we are from being able to flip the default for
Rules-Requires-Root.

Thanks,
~Niels

Package: lintian
Severity: wishlist

I'm looking at a very simple package, src:stepic at version 0.3-6.

head of d/control:
|Source: stepic
|Section: graphics
|Priority: optional
|Maintainer: Scott Kitterman
|Build-Depends: debhelper (>= 9~), python3-all, dh-python, quilt
|Standards-Version: 4.1.3

full d/rules:
|#!/usr/bin/make -f
|
|%:
| dh $@ --with python3,quilt --buildsystem=pybuild
|
|override_dh_python3:
| dh_python3 -p stepic
|
|override_dh_installchangelogs:
| rm -rf $(CURDIR)/debian/stepic/usr/share/doc/stepic/COPYING
| dh_installchangelogs
|
|override_dh_clean:
| rm -rf $(CURDIR)/build
| dh_clean

Here that `--with quilt` (and related quilt build dep) is totally
useless (actually, its behaviour may be confusing to some).
This is of course a '3.0 (quilt)' source package (and this proposed
check should be limited to those kind of sources).

Please emit a severity:wishlist tag about that useless dh-addon (ISTR
(but should be confirmed) that once the `--with quilt` is removed there
is already a tag warning about the usekess build-dep).

Dear Maintainer,

The PE security features test mis-reports 64-bit binaries as missing
features. You can reproduce this with the binaries in /usr/share/win64
in gdb-mingw-w64-target.

Dear Maintainer,

As you can see on lintian.d.o [1], qscintilla2 has:

 W python-foo-but-no-python3-foo

python-qscintilla2
python-qscintilla2-dbg

This is literally true, but not useful. There is no python3-qscintilla2, but
there is python3-pyqt4.qsci (and -dbg). There's nothing to do here. The
python and python3 names don't match exactly because the python names don't
match the Python Policy requirements, but it was decided to be more trouble
than it was worth to go back and change it.

I would suggest that instead of the check looking for an exact match for
python-foo and python3-foo, it should be enough to check that if there is
python3-*, it is sufficient. AIUI, the purpose of this tag is to highlite
packages missing python3 support and that is enough. Assume the maintainer
added the appropriate python3 names as needed.

I: libxml2 source: debian-control-has-obsolete-dbg-package python-libxml2-dbg

That's untrue for python-foo-dbg as those packages not necessarily or
anyway not only contains debug symbols for the python-foo library, but
also has the library build for the debug build of python.

Interestingly, I do not get that tag for the python3 version...

As Sean explains nicely in <87vagjt3yp@zephyr.silentflame.com> I
think dependency-on-python-version-marked-for-end-of-life should be info

Dear Maintainer,

My package won the

Lintian error even though all its binary packages carry NOTICE.txt due to

   dh_installdocs -A doc/NOTICE.txt [...]

Looking at the Lintian code, it checks for ^NOTICE(\.gz)?$ only:

but my NOTICE.txt is too small to be compressed by dh_compress and has

Dear Maintainer,

lintian caught the autotools-pkg-config-macro-not-cross-compilation-safe
tag on my "swath" package just because the AC_PATH_PROG macro appears
in a comment:

https://sources.debian.org/src/swath/0.6.0-1/configure.ac/#line20

The comment lines should be filtered out before checking.

Same here. IMO warnings about the last two policy versions should only be
shown in pedantic mode. If a package is 3 versions behind, then this
should be a normal lintian warning.

This would just be a question of turning down the warning for
"old-standards-version" to an info. We have a separate warning
(ancient-standards-version) that triggers when your S-V is (currently) 2
years behind.

IOW, trivially doable in lintian, please file a bug if you want this.

Hi,

another file that shouldn't be shipped by a package:
  /usr/share/glib-2.0/schemas/gschemas.compiled
was recently seen in grisbi, #883801

There are probably more candidated for such errors.
Looking for similar generated files in /usr/share brought up this list
on my stretch desktop:

/usr/share/applications/mimeinfo.cache
/usr/share/fonts/X11/*/fonts.dir
/usr/share/fonts/X11/*/fonts.scale
/usr/share/fonts/X11/*/encodings.dir
/usr/share/fonts/X11/*/fonts.alias
/usr/share/icons/*/icon-theme.cache
/usr/share/info/dir
/usr/share/info/dir.old
/usr/share/glib-2.0/schemas/gschemas.compiled

Package: lintian

Dear Lintian maintainers,

About the following tag:

E: python-script-but-no-python-dep
N:
N: Packages with Python scripts should depend on the package python.
N: Those with scripts that specify a specific version of Python must
N: depend on that version of Python (exactly).
N:
N: For example, if a script in the package uses #!/usr/bin/python, the
N: package needs a dependency on python. If a script uses
N: #!/usr/bin/python2.6, the package needs a dependency on python2.6. A
N: dependency on python (>= 2.6) is not correct, since later versions of
N: Python may not provide the /usr/bin/python2.6 binary.
N:
N: If you are using debhelper, adding ${python:Depends} to the Depends
N: field and ensuring dh_pysupport or dh_pycentral are run during the
N: build should take care of adding the correct dependency.
N:
N: In some cases a weaker relationship, such as Suggests or Recommends,
N: will be more appropriate.
N:
N: Severity: important, Certainty: certain
N:
N: Check: scripts, Type: binary

The description says: Severity: important, Certainty: certain, and the
tag is classified as an error, but on the other hand the description also
contains:

In some cases a weaker relationship, such as Suggests or Recommends,
  will be more appropriate.

This creates confusion in team-maintained packages, as it is hard to
conclude from this description whether there is a problem or not.

How about either downgrading the importance, severity or certainty of
that tag, or change the check so that it also tolerates recommends or
suggests on python ?

Have a nice day,

The tag no-symbols-control-file should be skipped entirely for ObjC
libraries, because instance/class methods do not appear in the symbol
table at all.

Even better, it would be nice if lintian reported an error
(objc-lib-with-symbols-control-file or something similar) if that
happens, as the effects could be disastrous (API additions and ABI
breaks may go unnoticed in most cases).

You can recognize such libraries with a reasonable degree of certainty
by looking at symbols beginning with __objc_(class|category)_name_.
Sorry that I cannot help with the implementation.

Dear Lintian maintainers,

my package splix triggers the following lintian check:

I: printer-driver-splix: arch-dep-package-has-big-usr-share 2498kB 97%
N:
N:The package has a significant amount of architecture-independent data
N:(over 4MB, or over 2MB and more than 50% of the package) in /usr/share
N:but is an architecture-dependent package. This is wasteful of mirror
N:space and bandwidth since it means distributing multiple copies of this
N:data, one for each architecture.
N:
N:If the data in /usr/share is not architecture-independent, this is a
N:Policy violation that should be fixed by moving the data elsewhere
N:(usually /usr/lib).
N:
N:Refer to Debian Developer's Reference section 6.7.5
N:(Architecture-independent data) for details.
N:
N:Severity: wishlist, Certainty: certain
N:
N:Check: huge-usr-share, Type: binary
N:

while it is true that most of the package is architecture independent, it
also happens to be extremely compressible (ppd files).
The one and only binary package splix has weighs about 150K.
I don't think the overhead (both for human and archives) of splitting away
the an architecture independent part of the package is worth the little
saving in space.
The lintian check is probably simplistic in that it assumes that a relatively
big disk usage in the installed systems implies a big disk usage for the
archives.
Maybe lintian could also check the size of the binary-dependent package, and
not raise the warning if it is less than 2MB (or so).
One could say that extremely compressible data should also be compressed on
the installed system, and I am probably going to do that; but the lintian
check is not about that, and remains flawed.
Cheers,

Luca Niccoli

cdebconf has a template type that debconf doesn't have, namely
"entropy". As a consequence, a package that uses such template but it
depending on cdebconf shouldn't trigger the following warning:

E: partman-crypto udeb: unknown-template-type entropy

(frankly speaking, I guess only partman-crypto is using that template,
but still..:-))

Hi,

> lintian: Emit warnings for Alioth URLs in packaging

I'm going to "park" this bug for the time being until we know the state
of any redirection services — simply warning maintainers right now that
they are using anonscm URIs is probably not tremendously helpful.

(The "moreinfo" tag doesn't 100% fit this use-case, but it certainly
captures the idea that one cannot fix it but not being "wontfix". Please
adjust with something more suitable if you feel strongly enough.)

Hi Chris

For the gnome-shell-extensions, they should be quite easy since they are
usually located under the "/usr/share/gnome-shell/extensions" path.

Looking at
https://lintian.debian.org/tags/package-contains-compiled-glib-schema.html,
it seems like entangle also has a valid use case of shipping compiled
gschemas for its plugins. Keeping a white list of these seem somewhat
tedious though.

I think it might be best to specifically check for shipping
"/usr/share/glib-2.0/schemas/gschemas.compiled" as the original bug
suggests, since that's the most damaging one when accidentally
overwritten, and there doesn't seem to be any valid case for ever doing
that from a package.

Ah, did not know that. Is there a way Lintian could tell the difference
between ones that should be compiled and which not?

Best wishes,

Bug#884142: package-contains-compiled-glib-schema may be in error

2018-01-09 Thread Jonathan Carter (highvoltage)
Hi

I believe that package-contains-compiled-glib-schema may be in error.

The topic of the original bug report states "test for packages shipping
/usr/share/glib-2.0/schemas/gschemas.compiled", which is good, nothing
should ever ship that.

However, the actual lintian test checks for any file called
gschemas.compiled, and suggests that it should be built using triggers.
Currently though, these are often built for gnome shell extensions at
package build time, which is a completely valid way of building these
binaries and there's really no benefit in recompiling these on the
end-user machine every time the package is installed/updated.

If compiling a gschemas.compiled for an extension at build time is
indeed undesirable and should always be called via trigger, then it
seems prudent that there should be some policy that reflects this before
it is added as a lintian error.

-Jonathan
