Bug#887124: lintian: Do not use new-package-should-not-package-python2-module on lintian.d.o

2018-01-13 Thread Scott Kitterman
Package: lintian
Version: 2.5.68
Severity: normal

Dear Maintainer,

When new-package-should-not-package-python2-module appears on lintian.d.o, it
is an unneeded distraction. At this point it's no longer a new package. Any
future upload will 'fix' the issue since all this test does is check that
there is only a single debian/changelog entry.

I can, sort of, see the utility of this, for new packages, to get the
maintainer to consider if the new python2 package is really needed or not, but
by the time lintian.d.o sees the package, it's too late.

Please supress this tag from lintian.d.o

Scott K

Bug#887120: lintian: check policy conformant use of /etc/skel directory

That is what I would like to prevent indeed.

I think the non-dotfile issue should be higher severity,
maybe even ftp-master reject but I don't mind no distinction.

Bug#887120: lintian: check policy conformant use of /etc/skel directory

2018-01-13 Thread Chris Lamb

Hi Paul,

As in, even these shells should not be adding new files? Do we even need the
warning/error distinction - why not just make them both the same error?

Bug#887120: lintian: check policy conformant use of /etc/skel directory

2018-01-13 Thread Paul Wise
Package: lintian
Version: 2.5.68
Severity: wishlist
Usertags: skel

Policy 10.7.5 discusses the requirements for the /etc/skel directory:

https://www.debian.org/doc/debian-policy/#user-configuration-files-dotfiles

These checks could be added:

 * Checking for files/dirs in /etc/skel that do not start with a dot,
   severity error
 * Checking for files/dirs in /etc/skel (except shells, see below),
   severity warning

Please whitelist shells that currently use the directory reasonably
legitimately (though I think some of these are policy violations).
I would suggest the whitelist should be package+file based, so the
shells should be able to keep their existing files, but not add any
more, nor add any paths from the other shells.

$ apt-file search -x ^/etc/skel | grep sh:
bash: /etc/skel/.bash_logout
bash: /etc/skel/.bashrc
bash: /etc/skel/.profile
ksh: /etc/skel/.kshrc
mksh: /etc/skel/.mkshrc

There is one package in the Debian archive that will trigger this
warning and I've already filed bug #887118 about that:

$ apt-file search -x ^/etc/skel | grep -v sh:
kytos-utils: /etc/skel/kytos/napp-structure/username/__init__.py
kytos-utils: /etc/skel/kytos/napp-structure/username/napp/README.rst.template
kytos-utils: /etc/skel/kytos/napp-structure/username/napp/__init__.py
kytos-utils: /etc/skel/kytos/napp-structure/username/napp/kytos.json.template
kytos-utils: /etc/skel/kytos/napp-structure/username/napp/main.py.template

The previous change dealt with explicit calls to dh_scour, but not its
use as an addon.

I've run lintian's script to update the debhelper data, which has
updated the addon mapping for scour amongst a bunch of other changes.

Adam

Bug#883772: lintian: please don't map implementation language to sections

With my Lintian hat on here, what I am 100% trying to avoid here is either
encouraging folks to blindly following it in error (and possibly tediously
asking them to change later) as well as being overly nagging in general.

Once we have nailed the section mapping "upstream", let's 100%, definitely
bump this back up. Perhaps even higher. In the meantime, I really want to
avoid harmful false positives (of sorts) as maintainers ignoring Lintian
undermines the quality of the entire Debian archive in areas outside of
sections.

You classification seems plausible, and getting some ftp-master
documentation that reflected that would be a good start.

Unfortunately making distinction is not possible based on the package
name for elpa- packages. Even making the distinction by hand is not so
easy. Consider the example of 'magit', which is an editor plugin that
probably belongs in either either "editors" or "version control" (or
realistically, both). On the other hand, it is a dependency of magithub,
and the elpa- naming is necessary for the dh_elpa tooling to work. I
think similar confusion exists in many other places in the
archive. `libapp-nopaste-perl` is in section perl, but its users don't
care that it's written in perl.

Unfortunately warnings with "certainty = possible" don't seem to be
interpreted as the lintian maintainers probably intended, as suggestions
requiring maintainer judgement. People just want to make their packages
"lintian clean".

Certainly, and that's what I've been following when filing my mass
override fixes to ftp-masters.

Right, that was my mistake, I assumed these were generic lisp modules,
just coming from an external module registry similar to CPAN, CTAN and
similar. If these are instead more like plugins than modules
(automatically depended on by other package) then indeed these do not
belong in the lisp section at all. I'll prepare a fix for this.

The organization of the archive has always been in the hands of
ftp-masters. Policy might need to be updated, perhaps to reflect
ftp-masters decisions here, not the other way around. It's worth
noting that the Section and Priority override used to be an essential
part of the NEW processing, which unfortunately I've got the feeling
it is not being done for a long time now at least for the Section field. :(

Some time ago I tried to discuss and clarify the Section organization
with ftp-masters, but there was unfortunately no much reaction, since
then I wrote a tool [O] to help me track and send mass override fixes
out of my own criteria, which seems to get applied w/o complain.

[O]

TBH I think the distinction here is clear (at least to me), language-
specific sections should *only* contain things that are language specifc
modules that are automatically depended on, and language-specific
toolchains and similar. But nothing for which the language is just an
implementation detail.

I'd rather we fixed the actual problem here with elpa, instead of
lowering it from W to I. In addition to my mass overrides, I was happy
to see that we could slowly course-correct the Section degradation via
lintian, but lowering this, makes it more difficult. :(

Hi,

I failed to follow up on my own deadline; sorry for the delay in action
on this.

I am going to request an update of the lintian-gid (will follow up on a
separate email to RT with lint-maint as CC). As for the git / alioth
membership, I propose we leave it for now and deal with it as a part of
the forthcoming alioth -> salsa migration (which was announced since my
original email).
On a related note; I would probably be tempted to move lintian under
the "Debian" team (the new "collab-maint") to avoid most of the user
administration.

Thanks,
~Niels

Bug#829100: lintian: [patch] Warn about over-eagerly xz-compressed data.tar.xz

2018-01-13 Thread Chris Lamb
tags 829100 + pending
thanks

Thanks for all your input. To prevent this issue going stale, I've
gone ahead and implemented the most basic regex-based checking. No
need to be "too" clever, right?

https://anonscm.debian.org/git/lintian/lintian.git/commit/?id=1f8051cb211c53a66c6c526828eee3fa90847cc9

We can naturally re-open this later if there is scope for
improvement or refinement. :)

Best wishes,
