Package: lintian
Version: 2.5.31
Severity: normal

Dear Maintainer,

I get these lintian warnings:

W: insubstantial source: dep5-copyright-license-name-not-unique (paragraph at
line 626)
W: insubstantial source: missing-license-paragraph-in-dep5-copyright
bsd-3-clause (paragraph at line 622)

(debian/copyright is attached)

The problem is caused by this paragraph:

Files:
./substance/src/main/resources/org/pushingpixels/substance/internal/contrib/randelshofer/quaqua/*

./substance/src/main/java/org/pushingpixels/substance/internal/contrib/randelshofer/quaqua/*

Use of the Quaqua Look and Feel is entirely at your own risk.
I will not be liable for any data loss, hardware damage or
 whatever this program might cause.
 .
Permission to use this release of the Quaqua Look and Feel is
 [...]

Which declares a "alternative license" for LGPL 2.1 OR BSD-3-clause, but
does not declare the BSD-3-clause itself.

My hypothesis is that Paragraph in line 626 cannot declare BSD-3-clause
because it is already part of the "LGPL-2.1 or BSD-3-clause" combination
(see above). I would expect that an alternative license declaration does
not count as a declaration of either member license.

Thanks and Best Regards!
Felix

The tags do not appear with modern versions of both Lintian and
insubstantial. They were probably caused by a copyright file that did
not meet Lintian's interpretation of DEP-5. That specification is not
very specific, and there is no reference implementation. Many people
report bugs about DEP-5 copyright files.

The tags are not reproducible (altho

Hi,

Following the resolution of #926543, several packages can be removed
from the blacklist in config.yaml. Please upgrade lindsay.d.o to the
latest git revision before making the change.

I only tested the latest source packages:

- firefox
- firefox-esr
- opentk
- pilot-link
- twoftpd
- khronos-opencl-man
- libnb-platform18-java
- netbeans
- thunderbird

Kind regards

The blocking bug was resolved but the new tag runner uses no blacklist.

Given enough resources, Lintian completes a full pass across unstable
and experimental without errors---except multiple llvm-X versions
sometimes bunch up with libreoffice and its international
translations, which exhaust either 100GB of disk space or 32GB of RAM.
(It's probably the RAM.)

Either way, this bug contains no actionable items. Closing.

Bug#953428: Using /usr/bin/env to invoke maintainer scripts

2020-06-01 Thread Felix Lechner
Dear Policy Team,

> Does Debian Policy prohibit the use of /usr/bin/env?

Lintian flags the interpreter /usr/bin/env in maintainer scripts.
Unfortunately, that appears inconsistent with the recommendations for
scripts in Debian.

Policy section 6.1 states that "Programs called from maintainer
scripts should not normally have a path prepended to them." It says
further that "any ... program that one would expect to be in the PATH,
should ... be invoked without an absolute pathname." Finally, it
expands on the point with "These considerations really apply to all
shell scripts."

Lintian does not flag /usr/bin/env in regular, i.e. non-maintainer scripts.

Why is the use of the system PATH desirable in the body of a
maintainer script, but not when locating the interpreter, please (the
shebang). Shouldn't we encourage the use of /usr/bin/env? Or does the
calling infrastructure disregard the path?

Please respond to the bug. I do not subscribe to your mailing list. Thank you!

Kind regards
Felix Lechner

Bug#961975: lintian: false positive copyright-without-copyright-notice when using Unicode U+00A9 COPYRIGHT SIGN

2020-06-01 Thread Simon McVittie
Package: lintian
Version: 2.78.0
Severity: normal

Steps to reproduce:
* apt-get source gnome-shell-extension-bluetooth-quick-connect=10-3
* apt-get download gnome-shell-extension-bluetooth-quick-connect=10-3
* lintian -Ii gnome-shell-extension-bluetooth-quick-connect_10-3.dsc
* lintian -Ii gnome-shell-extension-bluetooth-quick-connect_10-3_all.deb

Expected result:
* No warnings about the copyright file in either case (it's very simple, see

https://tracker.debian.org/media/packages/g/gnome-shell-extension-bluetooth-quick-connect/copyright-10-3)

Actual result:
* No warnings for the .dsc
* Warning for the .deb:
  gnome-shell-extension-bluetooth-quick-connect:
copyright-without-copyright-notice

In particular, I think this is a valid copyright notice:

"""
Files: *
Copyright:
 © 2018 Bartosz Jaroszewski
License: GPL-2+
"""

Possibly the problem is that the regex looks for © as the two bytes of
its UTF-8 encoding, \302\251 (\xc2\xa9), rather than as a single Unicode
character U+00A9 (\x{00A9} or even \N{COPYRIGHT SIGN} in Perl-speak)?

If my admittedly hazy recollection of Perl Unicode semantics is correct,
the regex needs to contain \302\251 or \xc2\xa9 if the file is
interpreted as a byte sequence, but it needs to contain \x{00A9} or
\N{COPYRIGHT SIGN} if the file is interpreted as a Unicode codepoint
sequence. This does seem to work:

Bug#961973: lintian: Please warn on x86_64-linux-gnu in debian/not-installed

2020-06-01 Thread Adrian Bunk
Package: lintian
Version: 2.78.0
Severity: wishlist

With dh compat 13 many maintainers add debian/not-installed.

A common problem (e.g. #961104, #961960) is that maintainers
add files under /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/

It would be good to have a warning like:

debian/not-installed contains an entry with 'x86_64-linux-gnu'.
This is usually a bug that will cause build failures on
architectures other than amd64.
Using '*' as wildcard is possible.

Dear Maintainer,

The latest version of lintian is giving error with orphan packages.

Like, bwbasic is an orphan packages and the Maintainer is having:
Debian QA Group but still lintian gives the error:

bwbasic source: wrong-debian-qa-group-name "Debian QA Group"

I have tested with few more orphan packages and they all give the same
error.

Hi,

there is inconsistent naming used for several lintian tags, e.g.

shared-lib-without-dependency-information
shlib-with-non-pic-code

Probably only one prefix (shlib or shared-lib) should be used.

Hi,

When converting the test suite to source format 3.0 some tests switched the tag

debian-changelog-file-missing-or-wrong-name

to

changelog-file-missing-in-native-package

Both tags seem to be essentially the same, except that the missing
changelog is expected in different locations in native vs. non-native
packages (/usr/share/doc/pkg/changelog.gz vs.
/usr/share/doc/pkg/changelog.Debian.gz). The tag is not emitted by any
packages in the archive.

In my view, it is unnecessary to issue two different tags. I would
like to use a shorter tag name for both, and show the expected path,
plus perhaps an annotation like

debian-changelog-file-missing /usr/share/doc/pkg/changelog.gz
(native changelog location)

Any thoughts?

Kind regards,
Felix Lechner

Severity: wishlist

Hi!

I brought this up for discussion on the mailing list some time ago [T],
and it resulted in the added support for renaming tags, which is great!
But the proposal then kind of died off.

  [T]

I'm copying below that initial mail, and attaching the subsequent
rename proposals (plus a few more I think) as a patch using the added
mechanism, even though I've not checked for newly introduced tags since,
as a discussion starter. If there's agreement I could sit down and check
the rest of the tags, and actually rename them in the code base.

§§§

I've noticed the recent addition of tags with either very confusing
names like:

- debian-watch-may-check-gpg-signature

As reported in #735040, where the suggested name seems way better:
  debian-watch-does-not-check-for-gpg-signature

- privacy-breach-may-use-debian-package

Does the privacy breach use the package? A better name could perhaps be:
  privacy-breach-uses-embedded-file

Or names that instead of stating the detected fact, seem to dictate what
it would like to see.

I agree with Jakub Wilk's recent comments on the list that these are not
good names either. Lintian detects patterns, some might be problems that
must be fixed in all cases, others might be a matter of policy, others
might perhaps be issues sometimes, and that's why lintian allows
overridding/disabling them either per package or per profile. Encoding
either the severity/certainty or the possible solution in the tag name
duplicates the information contained elsewhere and makes them awkward
to change.

I'd request that no more such tag names be added, and ideally the
current ones be renamed, although the longer they stay the more
overrides they might accumulate. :/

I skimmed over other tag names and I've found also these patterns which
raise red flags for me (might have missed some), and do not conform
with the vast majority of other tags, or even related ones:

Bug#961961: lintian: Unnecessary errors and warnings from Guile bytecode files

2020-06-01 Thread Tommi Höynälänmaa
Package: lintian
Version: 2.75.0
Severity: normal

Dear Maintainer,

Lintian gives the following warnings and errors for Guile bytecode files (*.go):

  * binary-from-other-architecture
  * shared-lib-without-dependency-information
  * unstripped-binary-or-object

None of those errors should be reported for Guile bytecode files.
