X-Debbugs-CC: Andrius Merkys

Commit 9904e258 from Andrius Merkys updated the archive sections at
the time of writing, but the process should be automated.

Lintian does not presently utilize any network resources, and while
that may change in the future, it would be the wrong way forward. It
makes no sense for Lintian to query the archive for valid sections for
every invocation.

Ideally, the file from FTP Master that is described below would be
packaged and backported as needed. It is probably not updated often. I
asked Ganneff about this on #debian-ftp but have not heard back. Maybe
it could also be packaged together with other Debian data, such as
policy versions, which are being worked on in this bug:

https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=968154#52

Packaging such data for Debian is also found in other areas, for
example in 'dns-root-data'.

An alternative would be update ./data in our repo for each new
release, but that data remains static for each release. We keep
scripts for such updates in ./private. Contributions are welcome.

Kind regards
Felix  Lechner

Subject: New archive sections, central location for sections
To: d-d-a

[DROPPED GPG SIGNATURE]

Hi

yesterday I created two new sections, one for go (#847520) and one for
raku (#816693) (AKA perl6).

And while I was on it, I followed the suggestion from #739934 and
created a file that contains a dump of all sections known to the
archive, together with their short and long descriptions. The initial
value of those descriptions has been taken from the packages.debian.org
code, so should be something well known and used.
That file is in the 822 format, with stanzas with 3 keys each, Section,
Description and Longdesc, like

- --8<---cut here---start->8---
Section: tex
Description: TeX
Longdesc: The famous typesetting software and related programs.

Section: text
Description: Text Processing
Longdesc: Utilities to format and print text documents.
- --8<---cut here---end--->8---

This file is now available from
https://metadata.ftp-master.debian.org/sections.822 and will
automatically be kept in sync with the archive.

Package: lintian
Version: 2.92.0
Severity: wishlist

Libraries that are documented using gtk-doc install documentation into
/usr/share/gtk-doc/html. This is technically part of the package's
functional interface, because higher-level libraries that depend on
a lower-level library can build-depend on the lower-level library's
documentation in order to adjust cross-references in the higher-level
library documentation to point to a local copy instead of an Internet
copy; so my interpretation of Policy §12.3 is that it would be wrong
to move this documentation into /usr/share/doc, because of this paragraph:

Packages must not require the existence of any files in
/usr/share/doc/ in order to function.[6] Any files that are used or
read by programs but are also useful as stand alone documentation
should be installed elsewhere, such as under /usr/share/package/,
and then included via symbolic links in /usr/share/doc/package.

For example, GTK has Build-Depends-Indep on GLib documentation in order
to fix cross-references to base classes like GObject and GInterface.
GTK-based GUI libraries like WebKitGTK have Build-Depends-Indep on GTK
documentation to fix cross-references to GtkWindow, and so on.

The GNOME team mostly handles this by leaving the real files that make
up the documentation in /usr/share/gtk-doc/html/mylib, and having
symbolic links like
/usr/share/doc/libmylib-{dev,doc}/html -> /usr/share/gtk-doc/html/mylib
to make it easy to discover via the usual paths. I believe this is
compatible with both the letter and the spirit of Policy.

However, it currently causes Lintian to emit
package-contains-documentation-outside-usr-share-doc. Perhaps there could
be logic like this pseudocode?

for each file outside /usr/share/doc that looks like documentation:
if there is a symlink in /usr/share/doc to the file or one of
its ancestor directories:
# assume it is used or read by programs
no tag
else:
package-contains-documentation-outside-usr-share-doc

Thanks,
smcv

I'm getting the error:

E: lepton-eda source: missing-build-dependency-for-dh-addon autoreconf =>
dh-autoreconf | debhelper (>= 9.20160403~) | debhelper-compat [debian/rules]

on a package that has

in the control file. This seems like a bug?

Package: lintian
Version: 2.111.0~bpo11+1, 2.114.0

I discovered during compilation of a (slightly) older package that still uses a
debhelper (>= 12)
compatibility with a debian/compat file stating 12 that the tag
missing-build-dependency-for-dh-addon
is unable to detect the fact that dh-autoreconf is needed when debhelper >= 10
is specified in the
control file or in debian/compat. This resulted in the erroneous errors on
missing dh-autoreconf
in xca, where it's not needed by debhelper >= 12 with a compat file stating 12.

This does not trigger when using "debhelper-compat (= 12)" in debian/control
without the debian/compat
file, however the tag information and description I saw was this when triggered
on mentors.debian.org:

autoreconf => dh-autoreconf | debhelper (>= 9.20160403~) | debhelper-compat

This suggests that if in debian/control you have a "debhelper (>= 9.20160403~)"
line (which
"debhelper (>= 12)" qualifies), OR you have debhelper-compat, that this should
not trigger.

HOWEVER, this triggers unless debhelper-compat is present in the build-depends,
suggesting the tag is
NOT being correctly matched during Lintian runs if multi-level compatibility or
experimental debhelper
compatibility (hence "debian/compat" and "debhelper >= 12" being present in a
given package) based on
what I've read in manpages.

This looks like erroneous tag detection. Note that if you put in dh-autoreconf
into build-deps it
triggers the as-expected useless-autoreconf-build-depends tag.

This currently triggers on the XCA package as uploaded to mentors.debian.net
yesterday - both versions
of the package (the one with dh-autoreconf in build-deps and the verison with
debian/compat and
"debhelper (>= 12)" in debian/control) exist to show this distinction, and both
packages in sid sbuild
chroots reproduce this behavior.

Oh, this is a great idea. I like this. That way if someone is using a
language group on purpose, such as in this case, they can just override or
ignore the tag.

FYI, the only tags found in 639-2 that are not in 639-3 plus 639-5 are:

{
  "alpha_3": "cnr",
  "name": "Montenegrin"
},
{
  "alpha_3": "him",
  "name": "Himachali languages; Western Pahari languages"
},
{
  "alpha_3": "qaa-qtz",
  "name": "Reserved for local use"
},

According to https://iso639-3.sil.org/code/cnr, cnr is in 639-3, so the
iso-codes data for it may be out of date. Likewise, him is apparently now
in 639-5.

The conclusion I'd draw from that is that there's probably no need to add
639-2 if you include both 639-3 and 639-5, and it may be simpler to just
ignore it.
