Problems with libraries and soname and python

2005-08-06 Thread Ghe Rivero
Hello everyone,
i'm just packaging a new library and i having problems with the
sonames. Let's call my package libsome. I have (more or less)

libsome1:
/usr/lib/libsome.so.1.1.1
/usr/lib/libsome.so.1 - /usr/lib/libsome.so.1.1.1
libsome1-dev:
/usr/lib/libsome/libsome_files.so
/usr/lib/libsome/libsome_shadow.so
/usr/lib/libsome.so - /usr/lib/libsome.so.1.1.
*.la
*.h

But when running lintian i get:
W: libsome1-dev: package-name-doesnt-match-sonames libsome_shadow.so
libsome_files.so

How should i resolv this?

Apart of this, i also hve python bindings:
python2.3-libsome:
/usr/lib/python2.3/site-packages/libsomemodule.la
/usr/lib/python2.3/site-packages/libsome.so

And i have this on lintian:

W: python2.3-libsome: package-name-doesnt-match-sonames libsomemodule.so

All this only appears with the last version of lintian. Thx in
advanced.

Hi,

I had the same problem. I followed the instructions at

http://groups.google.de/group/linux.debian.devel/browse_thread/thread/f353a6a4b73b6a81/

where it sais to create a sarge image and update it to sid with

pbuilder create --distribution sarge
pbuilder update --distribution sid --override-config

which worked well.

Best regards,

Andreas

pbuilder fails when looking for X / XOpenDisplay

2005-08-06 Thread Kevin Coyner

I've just started using pbuilder to build my packages and have run
into the following error when trying to build a package:

checking for sigaction... yes
checking for strftime... yes
checking for X... no
checking for XOpenDisplay in -lX11... no
configure: error: XOpenDisplay not found in -lX11
make: *** [config.status] Error 1
pbuilder: Failed autobuilding of package
 - Aborting with an error
 - unmounting dev/pts filesystem
 - unmounting proc filesystem
 - cleaning the build env
 - removing directory /var/cache/pbuilder/build//14176 and
its subdirectories

Is there a flag or options I need to set in pbuilder for X to be
recognized?

I've build this same package using straight dpkg-buildpackage and it
does fine. Just can't build it in pbuilder or pdebuild.

I'm using a sid based box and the pbuilder distribution is
also sid.

Any pointers would be appreciated.

Thanks
Kevin

Hi,

On sam, aoû 06, 2005, Kevin Coyner wrote:

Your package is borken, this is not a pbuilder issue, but pbuilder
detects it: you are missing build-dependencies. In this case, it seems
 you're missing a build-dependency on libx11-dev.

pbuilder is helpful in detecting missing build-dependencies because it
starts from an almost virgin environment.

Your dpkg-buildpackage is successful because the build-dependencies
are installed on your system, but it is an error in your package not to
list them in the control file.

I suggest you try understanding what the requirements are to build your
package, this is usually achieved by reading the upstream INSTALL file
or better: the configure.ac/in. You can then derive the needed
 build-deps.

   Bye,

Hi Andrew,

thank you for your hint about the copyright. But I'm not willing to give up
so quickly :)

As a first step, I've noticed, that this package builds without any problems
after I've removed the win-dir (surprise). I think this is a very
important first step. But bevore I continue, my question is: When I remove
all the copyrighted stuff and if the package is still build- and runnable
afterwards, is it possible to let it go into debian as contrib? I wonder,
because even if I've cleaned up the whole sources, there would still be
the .orig.tar.gz where all this copyrighted stuff is in.

And when you are removing such non-free parts, and they form a good part

Ok, after the first shock, I've investigated the problem and after all the
situation is not that bad:

1) the win-dir can easily be deleted without any problems for us. Upstream
assured to me, that they have taken care that everything in their project
is GPL-compatible. I've asked them about the win-dir and may hopefully get
an answer in the next hours.

2) The gifs are free! Upstream has taken them from

http://java.sun.com/developer/techDocs/hi/repository/index.html

and as you can see the license (bottom right link):

http://developers.sun.com/license/berkeley_license.html

is free to.

I hope to get an quick answer from upstream about the win-dir, maybe there
is no need to change the code at all :)

I suggest you try understanding what the requirements are to
build your package, this is usually achieved by reading the
upstream INSTALL file or better: the configure.ac/in. You can
   then derive the needed build-deps.

I was missing xlibs-dev in the Source/Build-Depends part of my
 control file.

Use what you really need. It was already mentioned in this thread
(libx11-dev). Don't use xlibs-dev, it's superfluous and a empty
dummy package anyway...

because even if I've cleaned up the whole sources, there would still be
the .orig.tar.gz where all this copyrighted stuff is in.

There is a target in debian/rules which can sift the upstream tarball
to produce an .orig.tar.gz if needed. Most often, it's needed for
repacking tar.Z or other formats, but I think it could do this too.

Unfortunately not. :-( Try actually downloading the graphics from that
site using the link provided, and you're forced to accept the
 following license agreement:
[...]
This license is obviously non-free as it expressly prohibits creating
or distributing modified versions. I also suspect that the prohibition
on using the graphics in a manner which is disparaging to Sun fails
 DFSG #6.

Hmm strange behaviour of sun...

But hey, it's still an improvement - beforehand, we didn't even have
permission to distribute the graphics *at all*. Now at least they're
 suitable for non-free.

Fine, for me that's a good start. I'd like to package tvbrowser as non-free
at the first run and in the meantime try to convince upstream to substitute
this non-free-images with free ones in the next version. If they don't want
to do so, than I'd do this by myself in order to push tvbrowser from
non-free to contrib. Would this be OK?

In the meantime I've found something about the copyrighted files from sun.
Actually these files are part of the official j2sdk! The contens of
win/include seems to be just a copy of my /usr/lib/j2sdk1.5-sun/include.
But I have no idea how to treat this information. Does this mean, that
these files can be treated like our gifs, or do they block a distribution
into debian? If not: here is my updated non-free version of tv-browser:

http://venthur.de/debian/tvbrowser/

If these files are showstoppers, then I'll just remove the win-dir (we
obviously don't need it anyway).

Kind regards and thanks for your help

Bastian

Sounds good.

In order to distribute any part of Sun's j2sdk you have to agree that
(iii) you do not distribute additional software intended to replace
any component(s) of the Software. Since Debian distributes and
encourages free replacements such as Kaffe, GCJ and SableVM, no part
of j2sdk can be distributed by the Project at all, even from non-free.

If these files are showstoppers, then I'll just remove the win-dir (we

Yep, that's what you'll need to do.

No worries. :-)

Cheers,

Done! :)

I've removed the win-dir from the original-sources and the real sources.
The package is marked as non-free, lintian- and linda clean.

I hope after all this endeavors, someone will sponsor this problem child ;)

Last I checked you can't distribute parts of Sun's java anyway, only
the *precise* installer files provided by Sun. You're not even allowed
to stuff the installer inside a .deb package. Blackdown had to get
explicit permission from Sun to distribute their version.
