I already maintain with sponsor one package (vim-vimoutliner) so I should
have some experience with doing that. However, this package is currently
unmaintained upstream (although, upstream developer promised to help with
possible bugs), so I will have to do some work (and I already did --
porting to libstdc++6).

It tries to be a BSD style license, as far as I can tell, but it has a
problem:

It is, verbatim, the 3-clause BSD license without the 3rd clause.

It is probably best to include it in the debian/copyright file, since
it's not exactly the BSD license.  Alternatively, you could say that
it's the BSD license without the 3rd clause, but IMHO, that's awkward.

A Debian native package is one which is built without an orig.tar.gz
of the expected name in the parent directory of the package directory.
Usually it happens accidentally, because someone used the wrong name,
hyphens vs. underscores or something.

It is evidenced by the upload of only a .tar.gz and a .dsc, and not a
.diff.gz

Yea, and it is worse because people often accidentally upload packages
as native which should not be.

That's how many native packages we have somewhere in the archive.

This is the way RPM works, but not Debian. Tell him no user will
ever build the deb package because it is *in* Debian.

I think that would be okay. Alternatively, just leave it in, make

I'd be generally willing to sponsor it, but...

- Please close the WNPP bug 273204 which you opened yourself
  one and a half year ago.
- Please use the current standards version.
- The copyright file should contain the years of copyright.
- There has been long time no change. Did you contact the upstream
  to make sure the software is still maintained?
- Installing the README file doesn't seem to add any value for the
  end-user.
- The upstream tarball I just fetched from the web site has another
  md5 checksum than the orig.tar.gz you provide. How come?
  At a first "diff -r" glance the two files have many differences.
- The package is not lintian clean. Three issues there.

Please fix that first.

Uh, for that issue, you just need to ask upstream to
  s/FREEBSD PROJECT/VIRTUAL EXIM DEVELOPMENT TEAM/
.

This has nothing to do with whether or not it's a real BSD license.
It's just upstream being sloppy about copy-and-paste.

In terms of DFSG free-ness, the license is fine, since it is the
3-clause BSD, with one less restriction (well, actually, that
restriction is already covered by law).

So the only problem, really, is just making sure that all the names are
correct.
