RFH: tpctl/thinkpad-source

2006-09-23 Thread martin f krafft
Dear collagues,

when I took over the thinkpad package from Thomas Hood, I did not
know that mdadm and hibernate were going to keep me *that much*
occupied. It turns out that I found no time to work on the thinkpad
package, despite all my great plans for it. It does not look like
I'll find the time between now and "etch" either.

It is thus that I solicit help for the package. Basically, the
packaging needs an update to support module-assistant, and a new
upstream version has been released. There is also a small number of
bugs (http://bugs.debian.org/tpctl).

The packages (actually, two of them: tpctl and thinkpad) are
maintained in SVN right now:

  http://svn.debian.org/wsvn/pkg-tpctl/thinkpad/trunk?op=dir
  svn://svn.debian.org/pkg-tpctl/thinkpad/trunk
  svn+ssh://svn.debian.org/svn/pkg-tpctl/thinkpad/trunk

  http://svn.debian.org/wsvn/pkg-tpctl/tpctl/trunk?op=dir
  svn://svn.debian.org/pkg-tpctl/tpctl/trunk
  svn+ssh://svn.debian.org/svn/pkg-tpctl/tpctl/trunk

If you can dedicate some time to it to get it ready for etch, please
do so. Ping me and I'll give you SVN access ASAP, and use svk in
between.

Cheers,

In addition I changed my email address, I hope I did this right as well.

A few quick comments,

  * You should close your ITP in the changelog entry.
  * Please wrap debian/copyright at 80 chars.
  * You can delete unused dh_* calls from debian/rules.
  * You should move tetex-extra and debiandoc-sgml to
 Build-Depends-Indep as you are building arch: all and are not using
 them in the clean target. (Thanks to lintian).

Unfortunately I cannot sponsor the package for you.

As said, "fast" really is a subjective term. Also "praising" your
software in the short description doesn't seem like good practice to me.
Maybe I should just stick with the original description. ;-)

I don't think there is a need for this as I'm the upstream author and
the case where I would stop maintaining the package would also be the
point where I'd stop maintaining the software. As long as a watch file
isn't a requirement I don't think I'll add one.

I've added the copyright information for these files, but I have one

other generated configure scripts?

I think it's already done, because in /usr/share/doc/drapes/ there is
the file NEWS.gz which is the gziped copy of the NEWS file of the tarball

ok, fixed the first two issues, but I thought dh_install makes already the
copy locally... I'm wrong?
Finally, I used dpatch rewriting patch/unpatch targets looking at manpage
of dpatch, but now it's made using the method suggested by you.

> * config.{guess,sub}
> - take care of those files: they can create many problems. you can

I have applied config.dpatch because debian/rules, based on the template
of dh_make, makes a copy of these files from /usr/share/misc, alterating
the original tarball, with the side effect of including the updated
config.guess and config.sub in the diff.gz.
In this manner, I hope to have followed correctly the
/usr/share/doc/autotools-dev/README.Debian.gz guidelines...

I would like to see it maintained at least collectively, as we have the gpsca
rewrite coming up, that will take a team effort to prepare imho.

There are currently three different packaging efforts existing, we need to
decide on the way forward. Any ideas on how to proceed?

There is an existing alioth project, with SVN + mailing list. Should we build
upon that effort and lobby Otavio with hard work?

Hi, last one,

  * ITP and Homepage: again.
  * debian/copyright again.
  * The copyright status of the upstream work seems unclear, I think you
should seek to clarify it.
  * Remove the cruft from debian/watch.
  * The system of substrvars you have used is a little strange, I don't
know what to make of it. You might also want to use your own
namespace for the variables in case they are used by anything else
in the future.
  * The upstream build uses CC_FLAGS rather that CFLAGS, the consequence
of which is that the package is built without -g.
  * The binary package name differs from the source package name again.

Hi again,

Powerpc user help requested wrt Bug#388423: stealth: empty package on powerpc

2006-09-23 Thread Frank B. Brokken
Dear mentor-readers,

Recently, I ran into the following problem, which I'm unable to solve
unless a powerpc (PPC) user is willing/able to assist by either performing
some tests in collaboration with me, or by (temporarily) offering me an
account.

Here's the problem:

On packages.debian.org [1], the PPC package of stealth 1.45-1 appears to
be empty. It's the only platform showing this peculiarity, and since I
currently have no access to a PPC, it's very hard to find out what caused
this. The buildd log [2] shows a strange series of three `rm -rf' logs,
instead of the proper installation.

The following would be helpful:

1. install `icmake', and obtain the stealth source package [1].

2. Untar the stealth archive, and from the top-level directory
(stealth-1.45) run the following commands:

./build install /tmp

This command will fail, since nothing has been built yet, but it shouldn't
do the `rm -rf' things that show up in the buildd logs.

If this works well and if stealth's other build-requirements are installed
to, (libbobcat1-dev (>= 1.9.0), yodl (>= 2.01.03), g++ (>= 4.0.0), tetex-bin,
tetex-extra, and gs | gs-gpl a full manual build might be performed:

./build distclean
./build manual
./build man
./build program
and then:
./build install /tmp

Saving all output of the build process and making it available to me would
of course be greatly appreciated.

2. Another test would be to reorder the flow-control in the build script
and see what happens next. Looking at the build-script you'll see the
following code-section:

option = element(1, argv);

if (option == "clean")
clean(0);

if (option == "distclean")
clean(1);

if (option == "install")
install(element(2, argv));

if (option == "man")
manpage();

if (option == "manual")
manual();

if (option == "program")
program();

One of the things that might be worth investigating is what happens
when these alternatives are reordered. E.g., by placing the clean-alternatives
at the end:

option = element(1, argv);

if (option == "install")
install(element(2, argv));

if (option == "man")
manpage();

if (option == "manual")
manual();

if (option == "program")
program();

if (option == "clean")
clean(0);

if (option == "distclean")
clean(1);

followed by rebuilding the package.

3. Finally, I would be interested in inspecting the compiled build
script. To obtain the compiled script, the following would be required:

mv build build.im
icmake -c build.im
mv build.im build

This produces a file build.bim which is the byte-compiled script. The
command `icmun build.bim' should produce (after some initial tables) a long
list of assembler-like instructions on the standard output stream. It would be
nice to know if icmun runs fine on the build.bim file, and I would very much
like to have that .bim file.

It's a lot of things to ask, but I would greatly appreciate your help by
performing as many of the above tests as possible. If you run a test, could
you save the produced output on file, and send me the output? With test 3 the
output is not useful. Instead, receiving the binary .bim file would be
appreciated.

As an alternative, if somebody could offer me a (temporary) account on
his/her PPC, I could perform the tests myself, which would of course reduce
the need to request and communicate the results of possibly many tests.

Oh yes,

and why is the source package named differently to the bianry package?
This is discouraged for single binary packages, but if you intend to
build more binary packages from the source one day then it is ok.

The upstream tarball must be present and named correctly. For example,
assuming your package has version 0.1-1, you need
webcam-server-0.1.orig.tar.gz in the same directory as webcam-server-0.1/, the
directory with the source. It may be a symbolic link, the important thing is
the name. Also, the version (0.1) is derived from the debian/changelog entry.
So that must be equal to the name of the tarball plus a debian-part (in this
example, 0.1-1).

Thanks,
Bas

If this is using the standard KDE makefile set, be aware that IIRC the
makefiles are broken and are incompatible with the versions of
autoconf in Debian.

I'd really like to see this in Debian. I used gnucash in the past for
this purpose, but it seems to be a bit overkill for this little bookkeeping.

In the package description you could mention that this is a KDE app. I'd
look for this information when searching gnucash alternatives.

I tried building the package with pbuilder, but did not succeed:

However, it was build in an etch chroot -- will try sid later.

 complete solution, with bookkeeping by double entry and support for
 scheduled recurring transactions, security investments, and budgeting.
 It gives a clear overview of past and present transactions, and
 development of incomes and expenses, with descriptive tables and
 charts, as well as an approximation of future account values.
