Hi,

The last activity of the hercules maintainer in Debian is from May 2010,
so I'm not sure if he is still active. What you could do is prepare an
hercules upload as a (friendly) NMU, and then seek a sponsor for it.

I admit that I have no idea whether this will work, and if it is safe to
package Dropbox like this. However, since it seems that Dropbox is unlikely
to ever make it into the Debian archives if it still contained pre-compiled
libraries, this was the only alternative I had. It looks like this won't
work either, if Dropbox crashes and refuses to work properly.

I'm now out of ideas; is there any other way of packaging Dropbox? Or should
I simply give up on ever seeing Dropbox in the repositories again?

AFAIK, the libraries that Dropbox uses are all licensed either under the MIT
(Expat) license, the LGPL, or the OpenSSL license. The only thing in the
Dropbox package that is licensed under the GPL is my actual packaging (the
contents of debian/), but I can also change this if necessary.

Anyways, are there any problems/anything I've overlooked with my ncrypt
packaging?

Re: Bug#585510: herculesstudio: changing back from ITP to RFP

2011-02-19 Thread Liang Guo
Hi,

Add CC to p2 and debian-mentors

Actually all packaging work had already completed, I had sent RFS to
debian-mentors too:

http://lists.debian.org/debian-s390/2010/07/msg7.html

But before herculesstudio can be used in Debian, hercules should be compiled
with external gui support, I had reported a bug 585508 to ask the package owner
to enable external gui support, but I got no response.

I've pushed herculesstudio source to git repository:
git://git.debian.org/git/collab-maint/herculesstudio.git

and hercules with some improvement to git repository:
git://git.debian.org/git/collab-maint/hercules.git

If someone can sponsor this package or continue this work, I'll be very glade.

Thanks and Regards,

RFS: spice-protocol - SPICE protocol headers

2011-02-19 Thread liang
Dear mentors,

I am looking for a sponsor for my package "spice-protocol".

* Package name: spice-protocol
  Version : 0.6.4-1
  Upstream Author : Red Hat, Inc
* URL : http://www.spice-space.org/
* License : BSD
  Section : libs

It builds these binary packages:
libspice-protocol-dev - SPICE protocol headers

The package appears to be lintian clean.

The upload would fix these bugs: 603697

My motivation for maintaining this package is:

SPICE is an interesting desktop virtulization project, I want Debian
can act as a guest or hypervisor with SPICE support.

The package can be found on mentors.debian.net:
- URL: http://mentors.debian.net/debian/pool/main/s/spice-protocol
- Source repository: deb-src http://mentors.debian.net/debian unstable main
contrib non-free
- dget
http://mentors.debian.net/debian/pool/main/s/spice-protocol/spice-protocol_0.6.4-1.dsc

I would be glad if someone uploaded this package for me.

Kind regards

Howdy d-m,

I'm working on a package, and I'm thinking about using pristine-tar.
Is there a best practices / tutorial set anywhere? I did some
googling, but since nothing jumped out, I figured some of the better
resources might be common knowledge around here.

Thanks!

RFS: rsplib-2.7.10 (implementation of the IETF RSerPool framework and example applications)

2011-02-19 Thread Thomas Dreibholz
Dear mentors,

I am looking for a sponsor for my package "rsplib". RSPLIB is the Open Source
implementation (GPLv3) of the IETF's new framework for Reliable Server Pooling
(RSerPool), which is described in RFC 5351 to RFC 5356. If you a looking for a
Grid compution solution which is simple, easy to setup and mostly self-
configuring, you are probably looking for RSerPool!

The RSerPool framework provides lightweight protocols and functionalities for
the management of server pools and sessions between users and pools. In
particular, RSerPool can be used for highly available applications and for
load distribution and load balancing in server pools. Its API is simple to use
and understand, making the development of own distributed applications very
easy. Details on RSerPool and the RSPLIB implementation can be found on the
project's website: http://tdrwww.iem.uni-due.de/dreibholz/rserpool/ . A
detailed introduction to the IETF RSerPool framework and the RSPLIB
implementation can be found in http://duepublico.uni-duisburg-

* Package name: rsplib
  Version :  2.7.10-1
  Upstream Author : Thomas Dreibholz
* URL : http://tdrwww.iem.uni-due.de/dreibholz/rserpool/
* License : GPL, version 3
  Section : net

It builds these binary packages:

(I've chosen python2.5 over python2.6/3.1 because python2.5 includes
all the python-related libraries that Dropbox needs, whereas
python2.6/3.1 only includes some.)

You can't just replace a Python extension built for one Python version
with another built for a different one; in generality, they are not
binary-compatible.

Incidentally, none of the Pythons in Debian are binary-compatible with
the one embedded in Dropbox.

Nb, I'm not interested in sponsoring this package, please don't Cc me.

Yeah, that's what I got from the infopage. What about droping it? I currently
fail to see what it's used for within Debian.

Beside that:
* debian/copyright should be worked on, it doesn't even list yourself
* What about fixing #588051? (if it doesn't break without it I'm for suggests
  aswell)
* Since you're upstream: There's a config.h.in~ in the orig.tar.gz.
  It seems to be not yet released or at least it's not yet on sf.net, maybe
  something to remove before uploading it there.
* LDFLAGS += -Wl,-z,defs -Wl,--as-needed could limit the dependencies a bit.

Still one point: In the file debian/manpages you need the line:
debian/openteacher.1

Reason: debuild always works from the root source directory.

LGPL + OpenSSL should be fine. It's GPL + OpenSSL that is a problem, since
GPL required the combined work be available under the terms of the GPL and
those are incompatible with one or two clauses in the OpenSSL license.

LGPL makes fewer requirements on the programs that link with it with can be
satisfied at the same time as the OpenSSL license. Basically, you have to
take the minimum steps to allow your software to be linked against a
compatible version of the LGPL code.

The binary contains the string "Fast ServerPath object for Dropbox",

RFS: ncrypt

2011-02-19 Thread Vincent Cheng
Dear mentors,

I am looking for a sponsor for my package "ncrypt".

* Package name: ncrypt
  Version : 0.6.4-1
  Upstream Author : Tachyon Technologies Pvt. Ltd.
* URL : http://tachyon.in/ncrypt/
* License : MIT
  Section : python

It builds these binary packages:
python-ncrypt - Python wrapper for OpenSSL

The package appears to be lintian clean.

The upload would fix these bugs: 528358, 614051

My motivation for maintaining this package is: Dropbox, another package
which I plan to upload, depends on this package.

The package can be found on mentors.debian.net:
- URL: http://mentors.debian.net/debian/pool/main/n/ncrypt
- Source repository: deb-src http://mentors.debian.net/debian unstable main
contrib non-free

RFS: Dropbox

2011-02-19 Thread Vincent Cheng
I've uploaded Dropbox again to Debian mentors; it includes several suggested
fixes, and it's now one step closer to possibly being accepted into Debian.
(This isn't my final upload though.)

The package can be found on mentors.debian.net:
- URL: http://mentors.debian.net/debian/pool/non-free/d/dropbox
- Source repository: deb-src http://mentors.debian.net/debian unstable main
contrib non-free
- dget
http://mentors.debian.net/debian/pool/non-free/d/dropbox/dropbox_1.0.20-2.dsc

Of the 52 libraries that was originally in the source tarball and in my
first upload, only a few remain. I've managed to track down the origins of
most of the libraries with apt-file, and instead of including those
libraries in the source tarball, I've set those packages as build-depends
and used dh_link to establish symlinks to Dropbox's directory.

Dropbox now depends on the following packages: python2.5, python-dbus,
libbz2-1.0, libssl0.9.8, libdbus-1-3, libdbus-glib-1-2, libpng12-0,
libpopt0, librsync1, libsqlite3-0, libssl0.9.8, libstdc++6,
libwxbase2.8-dbg, python-wxgtk2.8, zlib1g, python-simplejson,
python-netifaces

(I've chosen python2.5 over python2.6/3.1 because python2.5 includes all the
python-related libraries that Dropbox needs, whereas python2.6/3.1 only
includes some.)

The following libraries/binaries are still present in the source tarball
I've uploaded.

- _librsync.so: not present in librsync1. apt-file says that it's included
in the packages "rdiff-backup" and "duplicity", but I'm unsure if they are
the same libraries.
- dropbox: the actual dropbox binary
- fastpath.so: I have no idea what this library is, or what purpose it
serves.
- ncrypt/*: ncrypt is not yet packaged for Debian. It seems that this
package has already been requested in a RFP bug report for "python-ncrypt".
(http://bugs.debian.org/528358)
- netifaces/netifaces.pyc: this Python bytecode file doesn't seem to be in
Debian's python-netifaces package. I've no idea whether or not this is
needed, but I've included it at the moment for safe measure.

Eventually, only "dropbox" will be left in the source tarball. I'll have to
find some way between now and my next upload(s) to get rid of the remaining
libraries. It looks like I may also have to package python-ncrypt; if nobody
else is interested in this package, I'll look into it in the next few days
and try to package it. Incidentally, does anyone know where I might possibly
find the origin of "_librsync.so" or "fastpath.so"?

To address a few of the questions/comments I've received over the past few
days:
- I don't know Dropbox's actual distribution license, which is why the
license for the dropbox binary in debian/copyright only consists of
"Copyright 2008-2011 Dropbox, Inc. All rights reserved." I've contacted
upstream to try and find out where I can obtain the actual license for the
distribution of Dropbox.
- While I don't have the text of the distribution license, the previous
Dropbox maintainer has given me a copy of an e-mail conversation he had with
a Dropbox employee who granted him permission to distribute Dropbox in
Debian. See /usr/share/doc/dropbox/dropbox.mbox.

Kind regards,
~ Vincent Cheng
