Transition from oldpackagename to newpackagename
Howdy mentors, When making a new release of a source package that renames one of its binary packages, at http://wiki.debian.org/Renaming_a_Package> it is asserted “most package managers (including AFAIK apt) do not know to replace the old with the new one”. Manual usage of quilt does not work any more
Hi, I'm currently totally clueless in the following situation: I took a random package I'm maintaining (at least it is the case for three totally unrelated packages), say texmaker. I obtained the source tarball, untarred it and copied the debian/ dir from SVN into it. Then I tried: /tmp/texmaker/texmaker-2.2.1$ quilt push Applying patch 10_spelling_dict.patch patch: unrecognized option '--unified-reject-files' patch: Try `patch --help' for more information. Patch 10_spelling_dict.patch does not apply (enforce with -f) I have no idea at all why the patch does not apply because /tmp/texmaker/texmaker-2.2.1$ patch -p1 < debian/patches/10_spelling_dict.patch patching file configdialog.cpp works perfectly fine. If I unpack the source via /tmp/texmaker$ dpkg-source -x texmaker_2.2.1-1.dsc dpkg-source: info: extracting texmaker in texmaker-2.2.1 dpkg-source: info: unpacking texmaker_2.2.1.orig.tar.bz2 dpkg-source: info: unpacking texmaker_2.2.1-1.debian.tar.bz2 dpkg-source: info: applying 10_spelling_dict.patch dpkg-source: info: applying spelling-error-in-binary.patch the patches are applied, however I can not unpatch: /tmp/texmaker/texmaker-2.2.1$ quilt applied 10_spelling_dict.patch spelling-error-in-binary.patch /tmp/texmaker/texmaker-2.2.1$ quilt pop -a Patch spelling-error-in-binary.patch does not remove cleanly (refresh it or enforce with -f) The hint for refreshing or enforcing with -f is not helpful at all. My ~/.quiltrc is QUILT_DIFF_ARGS="--no-timestamps --no-index" QUILT_REFRESH_ARGS="--no-timestamps --no-index" QUILT_PATCH_OPTS="--unified-reject-files" QUILT_PATCHES="debian/patches" and I'm observing this problem on two different boxes both with nearly up to date testing (last update two days ago). I also tried the same in an up to date unstable chroot on a third computer. Everything with the same result. The problem is that I'm simply unable to move forward and backward in the patch set because neither starting from an unpatched source nore from a patched source seems to work any more. As I said this is the case with any package I tested and I neither can believe what I see nor do I have the slightest idea what change might have caused this problem. Any help would be really welcome Andreas. -- http://fam-tille.de -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-mentors-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? Moreover I have a general interest to become involved into Debian development (please note there is another ITP [1] I own, where I would await a review and/or sponsorship), so I would like to share my package. The Debian packages distribute man pages which have been written by me. I will propose the man pages I wrote and include into the binaries to upstream as soon as I sent this mail. FWIW: xNBD derived from the original NBD package and still shares code with it afaict. This might bring up the question whether it is legal to distribute xNBD as GPL-2+ (I can't tell xNBD is a fork though). The license statements made by ustream are a bit misleading and perhaps incomplete, as he seems to use the word GPL-2/GPL-2+ exchangeable. What I've been using is the examples info in the man page; i.e., create an archive, create a tag, then do a 'pristine-tar commit' to that archive and that tag. Seems to work well enough, but I also would be interested in best practises/tutorial in case I'm missing something... One thing I've found is if you are also upstream for the package, and you want to use git-buildpackage, you need to do the 'pristine-tar commit' for both the distribution archive and the debian 'orig' archive. It's easy enough to do (just rename the distribution archive to the debian 'orig' format & do the commit on that) , but is an extra step. (If there is an easier/better way to do that, I'd be interested in hearing about it...) My guess would be that most people use it together with git and git-buildpackage. It then boils down to having a pristine-tar branch and a debian/gbp.conf with [DEFAULT] pristine-tar = True In general the manpages for both, pristine-tar and git-buildpackage, are helpful.
