iptstate 2.2.1

2008-06-21 Thread Jerry Stuckle
OK, please excuse me if this is a noob question answered in an FAQ I
missed, or if I should be asking somewhere else. I'm a bit lost here.

I need to install iptstate 2.2.1 on an Debian Etch system.
Unfortunately, the one in stable is 2.1.1. 2.2.1 is available in
testing, but that would require updating a lot of things.

I could just compile and link the source for the 2.2.1 version, but I'd
like not to do this if I don't have to.

I would appreciate any guidance and/or pointers to where I can find more
about things like this without bothering people here.

Thanks.

Not a DD, but:

1) your question is more related to debian-user list, not debian-mentors
2) your can fetch source package from testing and try to build it on Etch
machine.
3) your may also check www.backports.org for newer version of your package

Thanks for the help, and I'll ask further questions over in Debian-user.

In this case you might only need to install exim4-daemon-heavy.

If you do need to do a custom build of exim then you should take
advantage of the package's rather nice support for creating an exim4-
daemon-custom package. I think it's documented in a file in the debian
directory of the source package.

Thanks for the info. I'll look into it. However, that was just an
example of what I'm looking for; I'm sure as I get into the source
distributions I'll find others which are similar.

Modifying existing packages

2008-06-16 Thread Jerry Stuckle

Hi, all,

I'm new to this end - and don't know if what I want is possible or not.
But here goes.

I need to modify some of the stock Debian packages for different
options. For instance, I need to modify
Exim to include MySQL support. I have several other packages with
similar needs.

What I need is a pointer to instructions on how I can get the the
information for how these packages
were built so I can modify them to meet my needs. I'd like to change
them as little as necessary to
maintain compatibility with other packages.

I've looked through a lot of documentation and haven't figured out how
to get the original build
information. But with all the available info out there, I probably
missed it, also. So if someone can
at least provide a pointer to doc on where I should start, I'd
appreciate it.

TIA.
