From the Website:
"In the early days, aufs was entirely re-designed and re-implemented
Unionfs Version 1.x series. After many original ideas, approaches,
improvements and implementations, it becomes totally different from
Unionfs while keeping the basic features."

Aufs is s.th. like UnionFS, but seems to be "safer and faster".
Details can be found at http://aufs.sourceforge.net/

KNOPPIX uses it (and maybe some other live cds)

You could also look at the ITP report[1]

I am already doing this and I own the ITP (Bug: #418613).

The bzr branch for the package is located at:

http://bazaar.launchpad.net/~juliank/command-not-found/debian

Please look at ITPs before packaging new software.

command-not-found is very similar to "auto-apt check", but command-not-found
is easier and targeted at the end user. And it gives
more detailed output, like instructions on how to install the package.

ftpsync can create index.html files.

Version 0.2 will include support for templates and inline python
to create these directory indexes. And it will allow you to create
*.html files from *.html.in files by inserting them into the template.

And of course it is written in python, which means it is Arch
independent and we have not that much code.

And it behaves more like a VCS software, in fact we have:
init (Wizard to configure a directory)
help
commit
status
options, though we don't keep the file history (but we have a log
file, .log.gz)

We also miss some features available in sitecopy (like fetching the data
from the remote site).

Please use a better version like 0+20070716, so you can later upload a

Then you need to set the distribution to experimental and not to
unstable in the changelog.

Maybe add a get-orig-source target, which downloads from svn and creates
the orig.tar.gz

A few other things:

1.
 Homepage: http://www.david-web.co.uk/index.php?p=envctrl
should be
  Homepage: http://www.david-web.co.uk/index.php?p=envctrl
(with 2 spaces at the beginning)
2.
Do not install the modules to /lib/modules/*/extra/, this is only
for linux-modules-extra. Maybe install it to misc?
3.
 envctrl-modules-_KVERS_.postinst.modules.in is not needed,
module-assistant creates the postinst files with depmod calls
 automatically.

I am no DD, which means I can not upload it, but I took

few things can be improved:
 - Remove changelog.txt from debian/docs, you install it with
   dh_installchangelogs
 - Delete the lines you commented out, this makes it easier
   to read.
 - Use Priority: optional

Simply answer to this message with "Re: RFS: multiget (still need
sponsor)" or similar.
I attached a diff with a few improvements and a man page.
(debdiff.diff.gz)
If you want to, you can also add me to Uploaders. (And add a changelog
entry, both in me-as-uploader.diff.gz)
Also update the timestamp in the next upload.

I hope you find a sponsor soon.

debian-legal is a better place.

I think, it's a GPL violation. The problem is that you cannot relicense
the public domain parts under the GPL, because they can not be
copyrighted.

RFS: ndisgtk (updated package)

2007-11-11 Thread Julian Andres Klode
Dear mentors,

I am looking for a sponsor for the new version 0.8-1
of my package "ndisgtk".

It builds these binary packages:
ndisgtk- graphical frontend for ndiswrapper (installation of Windows WiFi

The package appears to be lintian clean.

The package can be found on mentors.debian.net:
- URL: http://mentors.debian.net/debian/pool/main/n/ndisgtk
- Source repository: deb-src http://mentors.debian.net/debian unstable main
contrib non-free
- dget http://mentors.debian.net/debian/pool/main/n/ndisgtk/ndisgtk_0.8-1.dsc

I would be glad if someone uploaded this package for me.

Kind regards
 Julian Andres Klode

It was actually more or less part of my NM process. It is not uploaded
because the executables created by the command do not run, they always
segfault. At least that was the situation on sid/amd64 with kernel

I don't intent to sponsor this, but here are some
problems I have found:

- Don't use /var/medias/, use e.g. /var/lib/medias/
  (or /var/lib/cdarch)
- You modify /etc/fstab, I guess it's better to let
the user do this manually (or use an init script)
- Use Standards-Version 3.8.0
- Don't set CFLAGS if you only copy files
- There is no manpage
- You're copying a script to /etc/init.d/ instead of
  using dh_installinit.
- You're copying scripts to different locations, you
  may want to use dh_install.
- Cleanup your rules file by removing unneeded stuff
- Don't patch upstream files in the diff.gz
- Find a section for the package, unknown is no section.
- You can remove the whole Depends: line it seems

- You could use debhelper 7, a minimalistic
rules file and use debian/{install,manpages} files
  to install the relevant files.
- You could write the copyright files using the
  machine-interpretable format [1]

If we copy this field 1:1 into the package and the Packages files, many
packages will require patches, and the policy as well. I will try to provide
patches for dpkg, dak, apt and python-apt, as well as the policy.

As this change is not backwards-compatible, the first time we could introduce
such packages would be squeeze+1.

Although I do not want to sponsor it, I took a look
at the package and here are my thoughts:

Serious problems:
You do not use a pristine upstream tarball. All your changes
should be kept in the .diff.gz. And the first changelog entry
 should be 0.1-1.

Your copyright file is partially wrong. You mixed text from
 the LGPL and the GPL.

Minor:
You do not need the whole configure targets in debian/rules,
 they do nothing.

You should add a debian/watch file, see New Maintainers' Guide
5.10 for more information. It's not a requirement, but it's
 good to have.

You may want to follow the machine-interpretable copyright
 format proposal defined at:

2009-03-05 Thread Julian Andres Klode
Ben Finney wrote:
> Howdy mentors,

First of all, because you are not compiling anything, you don't have to
build-depend on python-all-dev. In fact, you can simply build-depend on
python [it's just copying the file to a directory].

And since you are using dh7, you can simplify your debian/rules even
more. And using python-support instead of python-central would also
reduce the complexity.

And you should also install RELEASE-NOTES as changelog.gz, as specified
in Policy 12.7:
"If an upstream changelog is available, it should be accessible as
/usr/share/doc/package/changelog.gz in plain text. [...]
If the upstream changelog files do not already conform to this naming
convention, then this may be achieved either by renaming the files, or by
adding a symbolic link, at the maintainer's discretion."

BTW, have you considered to use the original license for your packaging
as well? Because the time you add a patch to your package, the combination
of both is GPL licensed as well. Using the same license as the upstream helps
people to detect the correct license of the resulting work in an easier
manner (and upstream maybe likes you more if you use the same license).

Last but not least, I prefer to sponsor packages using a single revision for
every upload made to Debian. And before I forget to ask, why do you want this
package to get into Debian?

Summary and other small issues
---

debian/rules:
  - There is a char in line 23, which should not be there
  - The file could be much smaller by using dh's full power
  - RELEASE-NOTES should be installed as changelog

debian/control:
  - Build-Depend on python instead of python-all-dev

debian/copyright:
  - Update to the latest revision of the specification
  - Indent with one space, not with 4 spaces

Because you are only copying, it should make no difference. You only need
python-all if you have to call setup.py with different python versions.

You simply don't need python2.5 and python2.4 if you just want to call
python. And that's what 'dh' does.

dh_auto_clean runs python setup.py clean, and therefore Python has to be
in Build-Depends as it is needed for the clean target.

I do not think that there is a guideline, at least I do not know of
any. Generally, you can treat the file which contains more entries
as the changelog.

I generally treat mentors.debian.net in the way I treat a temporary
branch in eg. git. I develop a particular feature in this branch and
then squash-merge it into master, and only a summary of all changes
made in the other branch, relative to master.

And in Bazaar, if you merge a branch you also get a top-level message,
and the merged commits are simply sub-revisions.

And in your case, you are using a VCS to develop your package, which
means you still have all your changes there.

Interesting. I haven't seen anything using it, and at least my editor
simply prints "FF" (with a black background).

Well, you have changed it again to allow the symbols for copyright,
so this particular problem is gone (but it was in revision 440).

But I can not see that 'Expat' is listed as a valid value for 'License'
anywhere.

OK, but most people actually use 1 space, and you don't use 4 spaces in
debian/control either.

Actually, I do it almost the same way, but I do not use 4 spaces, but the
number of spaces required to get all items on the same column, eg:

Depends: a,
 b

But I don't use this very often, only for really long lists.

An exception is for packages which are otherwise perfect during my

Well, maybe it should be allowed to be a little bit less exact about
the copyright holders of the files, and just require different Files
sections for different licenses, eg. (the UK+US example)

  Files: UK
  Copyright: © 2009 Joe Bloggs
  License: GPL-3+

  Files: US
  Copyright: © 2009 John Doe
  License: GPL-3+

could be turned into:

  Files: US, UK
  Copyright: © 2009 Joe Bloggs
 © 2009 John Doe
  License: GPL-3+

It's easier to read than free form text, because you know where you have
to look. And you can write programs to make it even easier, and an
XML format would be ugly, but this one?

> Too time consuming to write and check
For big packages, yes. But checking does not require more time than
with the old format, sometimes even less.

> No real gain.
You can write a program checking your copyright files and validating it
against the source code. And checking it is in fact easier, at least if
you have a program (lintian could read debian/copyright and validate the
files, printing warnings for excluded or wrong files).

As already discussed, I will do it.

It's still not in the policy and many tools still don't support it. It
may be possible to use it after the Squeeze release.

File a bug against buildd.debian.org requesting to add the package to
Packages-Arch-Specific as Linux only.

But your package should be easily portable GNU/kFreeBSD because
kfreebsd-* includes a Linux-compatible[1] /proc (linprocfs). I compiled
it by removing the check for linux in linuxinfo.h, although the
application ended in an infinite loop.
